TOWSON, Md. -- The introductions between Landon graduate Peter Lamade and some of his teammates on the U.S. under-19 boys' world championship team probably didn't take long.
Lamade is one of five local players on the team, which opens play against Australia at 8 tonight at Towson University. The others are St. Albans goalkeeper Harry Alford, Archbishop Spalding midfielder Kyle Dixon, Georgetown Prep midfielder Bret Thompson and St. Mary's-Annapolis defenseman Eric Zerlaut.
....
Just as on the boys' side, the girls' team has a strong contingent from the Washington area. Jess Adam (Severn), Claire Bordley (Holton-Arms), Kathleen Miller (St. Stephen's/St. Agnes), Brooke Shinnaberry (Severna Park) and Kristen Waagbo (Mount Hebron) each began trying out for the team last spring, and have endured three rounds of player cuts to earn the right to represent their country. They begin play at 5 p.m. [Friday], also against Australia.
....
Australia is the only team to have beaten the U.S. girls' team, winning in the 1995 championship.
....
335 people showed up to watch that game. There are lots of seats available.
