Hiker Sets Triple Crown Record

APPALACHIAN TRAIL, Maine -- A hiker at the end of the Appalachian Trail yesterday became the first to traverse each of the three U.S. National Scenic Trails in a single calendar year. That's 7,400 miles through 22 states.

Averaging about 30 miles a day, Brian "Flyin" Robinson of San Jose finished the Appalachian yesterday on Mount Katahdin, Maine's highest peak. Earlier this year, he completed the Pacific Crest Trail in the West and the Continental Divide Trail in the Rockies.

Robinson, 40, is on leave from his job as a systems engineer at Compaq Computer Corp. He saved $10,000 to pay for the venture and ate mostly peanut butter and Snickers bars.
