Welcome aboard. If you do a search in the archives, you'll see that there was a pretty expansive discussion on martial arts in the past. I think you would enjoy the thread.

Hello and welcome to the board!!!

I hope you enjoy it here as much as the rest of us do!

There are a few of us martial artists here, and we all seem to be wiling to answer any Q's you might have: so don't hesitate to ask!

You have an interesting background in the arts.

I study Shotokan (18 years; I am 1st kyu [very recent]), and I also do some of William Chen's T'ai Chi Ch'uan (taijiquan).

I think you will find a very wide variety of styles and abilities represented here on the board.

Several of the members here will be attending the sporting events set for Chicago and Montreal this summer.

Again WELCOME!

Best Always,

Rob

aww, thanx so much for like the welcome and everything. I am actually considering going to the gay games in chicago this summer if I can get my instructors to come along and if i can get my parents to let me, both of which are highly unlikely.
I had actually seen the earlier discussion thread on karate but clicked post new like topic instead of reply so thats that, woops.
What kind of karate competition do they have at the gay games? like sparring, kata, weapons, breaking...does anyone by chance know?

Hi:

What's going on in Chicago is very similar to Open (all styles) tournaments that I've gone to. I did the games in Sydney, which were the forerunner to these. It's really very casual and friendly. If your Karate is part of the WKF federation, it's much more relaxed than that, since with so many styles, it's more broad, and nobody can lay claim to being the "correct" way.

I don't know how far chicago is from pennsylvania, or how old you are... (don't know if there is a minimum age?) But the competition is on the Weds July 19, with seminars on the Thurs. I suppose it's possible to come with your folks for a day or two, but it gets pricey. The fees are based on giving people a bus pass, and them attending two big ceremonies. Of course, you might be able to get the Chicago GG's to waive/or reduce your fees (but if you're underage, you'd probably need your parent's support.)

Not to worry if you can't go, this event is not going away, and there will be another one.

Do you do tournaments in Penn?
thellamaclan
yeah I dont compete that much, a few a year all within like an hour or two away. I was actually at one this past sunday in my hometown and I was doing pretty well and then I fell during kata, so i like lost what had been an almost garunted placement. I did however win 2nd in breaking. There arent that many tournaments nearby but I do go to the ones that come up, i think my next one is in may or something :/
