Hi Guys!

Anyone playing the Liberty Open or Boston?

I am interested in finding a "C" doubles partner.
Gaga4Gaby
I play Liberty each year, seeing as how it's my hometown tourney, but I have quite a fabulous doubles partner already. So I'm no real help on that front.

For what it's worth, the people I've known who have had GLTA tournament organizers assign them a partner have enjoyed meeting the new people and I haven't heard any real horror stories. Most people are friendly. You shouldn't let the lack of a doubles partner stop you from signing up, that's for sure smile.gif

Definitely not. I just got home from playing the LA Pride tourney and they fixed me up with a doubles partner and we had fun, though no great success. Singles is more my thing, unfortunately for him. But it's a fun thing and most people are very easy to get along with and it's fun.

Hmmmmm, I've actually had the opposite experience from Gabby. Liberty is my home tourney as well, and last year at the last minute they told me they could not find me a doubles partner - and didn't refund my entry fee for doubles!!

Thanks for the posts! I have played the tournament in past years as well. Normally I have a doubles partner, but this year I do not. Many of the "C" level players from my area are not playing the tournament. I made the quarters last year and this year I want to bring home a blue plate:-)

Regards!

Really, Munson Man? I'm surprised that they wouldn't refund your entry fee. That doesn't seem right. I would think there would be some kind of blanket GLTA guidelines about that. I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. Are you in MTG or do you just play the Liberty each year? I ask because I'm wondering if you have a relationship with Mark & Marsha (the tournament organizers) beyond Liberty each year? That seems really odd to me...it doesn't sound like them.

For the record, I have a blue liberty plate biggrin.gif (It's from D doubles several years ago, but who's counting...?)

Hi Guys!

If you know anyone who is looking for a doubles partner in level "C", please let me know. I won two "C" doubles tiltes last year and want more hardware :-)

Regards!

sounds like it's time to move up to "B"? tongue.gif

LA pride tournament was great fun, btw. always nice to see mattkorey dominating on the courts with those textbook strokes... wink

luv ya' matty!

Hi Houston Man!

Ranking not there in "B" yet... so I will remain in "C".

Are you playing NY or Boston?
faydman
i generally do play boston, but haven't firmed up travel plans yet. may do san diego instead...

boston is always one of the best tourneys, though. steve, frank, dean and the rest are always so nice and make everyone feel very welcomed.

Hey, Chicago runs a huge indoor tourney in August!
Gaga4Gaby
Speaking of tourneys, anyone else scheduled to go to Toronto in a few weeks and torn about what to do? I can't decide if it's alot of panic and overreaction or if I should just accept the fact that I shouldn't travel? Everyone I know who's going from NY is sort of in the same boat -- waiting for something to happen to either let us know we should cancel or that it's safe to go despite the SARS scare and WHO warnings.

Sigh. I was really looking forward to Toronto. I love both of the Canadian tourneys.

I believe faydman is going to Toronto and it was really nice to see him in LA at the tournament as well. I may not have textbook strokes, but I definitely had the most on court drama of anyone at the tournament, so I should have been given some award for that. Or at least a certificate for free mental health counseling that I could have given to my tragic opponent.

I'm glad I didn't decide to go to the Toronto tourney as I think I'd be a little reluctant to do that at this point. Just seems to be tempting fate just a bit.

why not Matt? Think about it. Winner: Open Division the "SARS Open 2003"

Textbook strokes are overrated, Matt. Don't let the haters bring ya down smile.gif

I think I under-pronate. Is that possible? In my mind, my tennis is beautiful.... smile.gif

You go Girl!!

I should have hit with you this past weekend. The weather was beautiful. I spent all weekend at central park with my BF.
Gaga4Gaby
Yeah, I played out at the public courts by the National Tennis Center on Saturday and Sunday. It was great to play outdoors again, especially after the rotten winter we've had. I'm attempting to come to the net more, which isn't easy considering how short I am, but it's fun when it works. Just like Gaby in 1991! (Well, in my mind, anyway. I can't hit topspin to save my life!)

Playing indoors this Saturday night, which is good, since it's supposed to rain all day. Hope the weather in Kentucky is better for playing!
ung
NO, the weather was better in NYC than in Kentucky. it's miserable here. I should have stayed in Manhattan. How's the song go?

"Take me back to Manhattan! That mean old dirty town!"
mattkorey
Yeah, I think I'd rahter win ugly than lose pretty, but I'd just as soon not have people on the sideline with puzzled looks when I hit my forehand. Or maybe they had a stroke, at the sight of my strokes.
Munson Man
Hi, G4G - yeah, I'm an MTGer. Have been for a few years. Also a former hardware winner - but at the club championships rather than the Liberty. Am flying back to NYC tomorrow night and am scheduled to play sessions on Saturday - it ain't gonna be pretty. As for future tourneys, I may try one in Florida or California next winter, but I'll be skipping Liberty and the club championships. BTW, in all fairness to those guys, I didn't raise a ruckus about not getting a refund, but I also felt it should have come automatically without my having to pursue it. Descending soapbox..........
faydman
matt...we cancelled the toronto trip before the SARS thing grew for work-related reasons. i talked to several people who are signed up and considering a no-show. not sure what i'd do if i were still signed up....
Gaga4Gaby
Munson Man -- I'll be at the playing party on Saturday. Sessions 1 & 3. Do I know you? I figure if I do, then you know who I am already by all the Gaby rantings. If you don't know me already, I can easily be identified by my overwhelming cuteness...okay, maybe not, but definitely by the Gabriela Sabatini pin that is always affixed to my collar.

I'm still signed up for Toronto as of right now. You can get a refund if you withdraw before May 3rd (that's when they do the draw). So, we're giving it until Thursday, May 1st, to see what develops. I heard on the news this morning that 18 cases of SARS are now officially recognized in NYC. If it gets crazy here, I see no reason not to travel to Toronto. I might as well get a life-threatening disease on vacation rather than at home!! But, still, it's looking more and more like we're going to have to pull out. That sucks, but I guess in the grand scheme of things, not the biggest problem.
