Steroids aside, why does Barry Bonds get such a bad rap? Is it due to his attitude towards the media. I could never understand it. Was it this way when he was with the Pirates?
I remembered going to a Giants game at the stick yrs ago with my boyfriend at the time, who heckled the poor guy to death. I was so embarressed.
On another note: Jeff Kent returns opening day in Dodger blue. I use to love that guy until I heard he made some anti-gay comments. I'll be there to boo him loudly.

Bonds had another knee surgery and will likely miss opening day. I think the team will still do well, but just having Bonds in the lineup always changes the opposing team's attitude toward the Giants. Hopefully pitching will pick up (please, do we have to start with Reuter?) and we can get off to a good start. By the way, is Dustan Mohr gone from the Giants? I loved him, he had a rocking body and had a great fun character. And he would be the normal substitute for Bonds in LF. So who'll be there now?

Mohr signed a 1 yr. contract $950,000 with the Rockies. Hopefully he'll play frequently and not hurt the Giants when we meet up with the Rocs during the year.

Horrible news for Giants fans today. Bonds will most likely miss the first half if not the entire season.

Sure he will.

The Giants haven't given such a diagnosis, as far as I know. His comments were just a result of his steroid-induced mood swings.

There is nothing from their trainer Stan Conte leading anyone to believe that he is going to miss a half or the whole season. That being said, I don't believe that after having arthroscopic knee surgery, having a setback and then again having knee surgery all within a few months is good for anyone. Especially not good for someone over the age of 40 with lots of mileage on that knee. I think, and so does Barry, that he is going to miss signifigant time. Alou will move over to left while Barry is out and Michael Tucker will open up the season in Right.

It's very scary right now. Bonds could just be bluffing, but in my mind here in SF he's pretty much laying some truth down. If he is able to play, he'll play. Barry hates not being able to play. If he's not on the field by mid-April, I would be surprised.

It was a beautiful day in SF today, perfect for Opening Day! I was at the game and the Giants BEAT LA 4-2. Schmidt looked good (9 K's) and Vizquel made an acrobatic dp in the top 9th! Barry received his MVP and the fans gave him a loud ovation which he was very emotional over. He vowed to return and said SF has the best fans! This team looks pretty solid. Now if only Alou and Feliz could be more patient at the plate, then we could get those runners home. We have a closer and all looks positive for the team. Matheny (sweet)and Benitez and Snow and the rest... I'll be at Opening Night tomorrow. GO GIANTS!!!!

Same here but I missed the Barry speech, heard he was very emotional. I'm still amazed eek! by the play Omar made to finish the game. They shouldn't have any problems staying afloat until Barry returns.

Whoa! Fantastic turnaround for the Giants against the Rockies tonight. Giants lead 6-0 all night long and the VERY WEAK BULLPEN turned it into a 6-8 lead for the f**king Rockies. This was all to the lame RP from Brower (even though he's a real hottie) and we didn't think we would get out of it. But clutch hitter Marquis Grissom delivered and got the win!
GO GIANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where did this hottie SP Brad Hennessey come from? What a cute blonde boy!!
And he went 7 innings with a comfortable 6-2 lead against the Pirates. Good to know there's some talent available from AAA.

Bill, I noticed Brad last season when he was brought up a few times late last season to start, especially when there was that period when every pitcher was getting injured and the Giants were down to all their rookies.
Yeah, I think Brad's hot too, but I still don't know if he's really been tested against really tough opponents. From what I remember, he just pitched against average teams.
Still, it's nice to have five in a row!

On his website, Barry Bonds now confirms the SF Chronicle story that he's had
surgery for the third time on his knee. The doctors are trying to clear up an infection. They're going to give him antibiotics for 2 weeks and his rehab is on hold until after the infection is cleared. Looks like he's gonna miss a lot of time.

May 4 2005, 06:33 PM
Regarding barry Bonds and his most recent surgery, I think I must have missed something. Don't the Giants--the team that pays his salary--have physicians, physical therapists, and other trained personnel for the players to use? I know Bonds has long had his own personal trainer and nutritionist, but are players now allowed to go off the reservation for all the medical stuff?
Sidepoint: Going to see the Giants when they come to LA just won't be the same if I don't get to chant "Barry Bonds sucks." After all, in one of his press conferences, he mentioned how much it means to him to hear Dodger fans say that.

I don't think the issue is him breaking a baseball rule at this point. But certainly, if proven, lying to the grand jury (relating to possible steroid use) and tax evasion are very serious charges. Just ask Martha Stewart and Al Capone, both of whom went to jail for these charges.
I always can't help but wonder how non-chalant all the Giants fans who are also Barry apologists would be if Barry was a Dodger or a Yankee. Me thinks you'd be asking for his steroid-shrunken balls on a platter.

Well, this isn't a Barry Bonds bashing thread. The Giants are off to a somewhat rocky start, but they're only about 4 games behind LA, and LA is starting to slide into their typical mediocrity.
Jason Schmidt on the DL is not a good thing, but he has been very shaky so far this year. Also, batters have learned Lowry's pitching style so he's starting to struggle. Great game from Tomko on Monday night against the Pirates.
I'll be at the day game on Wednesday. Hopefully the Giants end up 2-1 against the Pirates in this series.
It's so strange not seeing Jason Kendall catch for the Pirates. Mackowiac is a doll though.

OK, any Giants fan out there who can tell me what's up with the pitching rotation? What happened to Jerome Williams? Why isn't he pitching? With the current state of starters, this may be the time to bring up Jesse Foppert, calous and all!
billsf
May 11 2005, 06:01 PM
Jerome Williams was sent down to hone his skills, he's been pretty shaky as an SP this year. Best bet for someone brought up for the SP rotation is Hennessey, he's done really well for the Giants so far. I haven't heard much discussion at all of bringing Foppert up.

May 12 2005, 09:16 AM
That's weird that Jerome could be sent down, and for that long, after his outing last year? I can't imagine him being so off his stuff that even during the current pitching crisis that he can't come back up for a second chance. I just don't understand. And what's confusing is Dave Righetti is such a stud pitching coach, I wonder why he's not able to get these guys back to their game. That's too bad. It's like the Giants have an black cloud over them now and it'll take some young upstart unknown to pull them out.

I always call Dave "The Hurler." A few years ago a friend of mine drove for a limo company. One night his fare is Righetti, and DR is thirty-three sheets to the wind. He's only three sheets to the wind when my friend drops him off, having left the other 30 on the floor of the limo. Too much information? Probably, and I'm not throwing Stoli bottles, but I always think of that every time he's shown during a Giants broadcast.

Barry Bonds was on an 24-hour a day IV antibiotic for two weeks after his most recent surgery and is just off the IV, now taking oral antibiotics. He cannot rehab until the infection is gone. He was even told that he shouldn't be on his feet at all while on the IV. He may not play for a looooong time.

Though anyone can develop a staph infection following surgery--and, if I remember correctly, the lust-worthy (not that lust-worthiness is a factor in infections) Dale Murphy suffered a similar infection after having the same surgey as Bonds--but I would have thought Barry Bonds would have been more closely monitored.

One of the problems is that the Giants have allowed Bonds to pursue the treatment with his own personal physician choice and the team management actually has had minimal involvement in the actual treatment. Since these problems are still developing, the Giants are starting to demand more involvement in the medical decision process. It's velvet glove stuff not to upset their superstar, but at this point I think Barry should admit he needs all the help he can get!

Where are the management's balls? Christ they pay this man a king's ransom in salary and they are just allowing him to go visit any witch doctor he wants?
