Not the classic Blake/Agassi was and Robby couldn't find that extra gear in the 5th but credit to him for pushing Andre to 5. But lets be honest...Federer was probably sitting back thinking yeah....work yourselves to death. Federer should send Ginepri a thank you card. Agassi has played his 3rd straight 5 set match. He's in incredibly good shape but he's still 35.

Seems like Ginepri went into the 5th underestimating Agassi a bit. The way Agassi limped through the end of the 4th, Ginepri may have wrongly thought that Agassi had run out of gas.
Glad to see Agassi get to the final. I'd love for him to win it all now and do what Sampras did a couple of years ago and retire. I just don't want to see Hewitt win it all. The guy is a putz.

Call me crazy, but I think its going to be an Agassi-Hewitt final. Lleyton has quietly made his way through the top half of the draw without much fanfare, and I think there's a good chance that he'll catch the Federer Express on an off day.

Andre is just amazing. After all the tennis he played this week, he still had enough in reserve to turn it up another notch. Just incredible.
I'm not certain about Federer. He's looked beatable at times, but I think part of it is that he hasn't had to play all out to win. Assuming he beats Hewitt - and he's dominated him of late - he'll be a prohibitive favorite against Andre. But I can dream.

Lleyton is a twit. 5 set points on Federer and couldn't convert thank goodness. I can't stand him and don't want to hear any of his "come on" antics. I bet Andre is rooting for Lleyton to keep Federer out there as long as possible though.

It's as if Federer is determined to win using his weakness--his backhand. So questionable. Such a bad game from Federer to let Andre go up 6-5, missing three break chances. Correction--make that four chances.

This match has to be so dismaying to the other men. Federer was quite vulnerable today, the crowd was very much pro-Agassi and he still won it going away. Maybe somebody younger and more spry could have pushed Federer to the limit but I can't think of who.
Only 3 matches lost all year and in 2 of them he had a match point. 23-0 in his last 23 finals. 6-0 in Slam finals. The other guys need to pick it up a bit.

I was worried for Federer yesterday and today. It almost seems as if he has to be threatened before he "ups' his game. I'm not saying he is overconfident or anything like that, buts it is as if he goes on court expecting to win (as he should) and has a set level to start play with that is good enough to beat 99% of his opponents and it takes a scare for him to have to change the plan and up the level of play. He is so smooth and controlled it is amazing.
And yes, I do think he is a very gracious champion. Have never heard or read anything to believe otherwise from any reputable sources. Hurrah Roger. I hope and expect to see many more victories from him over the next 5 yrs. Bravo.

Question for all you tennis types: Roger Federer has now repeated as champion at Wimbledon and the US Open. When was the last time that happened?
Do we really have to go all the way back to Don Budge in '37 and '38?
~Adam
Maybe Roger read too much of his press. I got the sense Federer came into the match expecting it to be given to him. When some of his shots seems to be missing, it's as if he found it inconceivable. Not ever have been an Agassi fan, I do give Andre alot of credit. He played his game and he played well. I think he had a letdown due to Fed's improved serving. He certainly had a chance to go up 2 sets to 1. Congrats to both.
Good Hands
Sep 11 2005, 05:41 PM
To repeat at both Wimbledon and the US Open...yes, you have to go back to Don Budge. Sampras won Wimby and the US in '93 and '95, McEnroe won both in '81 and '84, Conners in '74 and '82, Laver during his Slam years of '62 and '69,...not sure of any others who won both tourneys in the same summer. But not both in back to back years. So a great accomplishment by Federer.
Federer is so dominant on the faster surfaces. For now the real clash will most likely be at the French, where Federer will actually have a target, because on clay Nadal is already the one to beat. But Federer is a man on a mission to be the best ever.
The Aussie Open, on that slower surface, already is one to be anticipated.

Lately I have been thinking about that book I love so much--Winning Ugly by Brad Gilbert. In it hi relates how Lendl would play at 75% during the first set or two of the match and wear his opponent down, nad then really turn up the heat. I think Federer does something similiar to this, working his opponent to an edge and then dominating in order to really demoralize them--how many times does this happen? He get to 4-4 in a set and then just takes over. His opponent was playing as if he had a chance, and then, boom Federer is in Express mode nad the set is over.

First of all... I'm glad we're talking (and I mean "talking") about tennis again. I was reading some of the previous days' posts and felt like I was in the "Lindsay Lohan-Ashlee Simpson Chatapalooza 2005".
Second of all... what the hell is this dude talking about when he says Federer's a "smug SOB"? He is the LAST person anyone player or otherwise, would accuse of being smug, an egomaniac etc. Is this dude Ashley Harkleroad posting under a pseudonym? (for you Lindsay Lohan/Britney Spears types, that means "false name")

Agreed ung! Roger seems to be a classy, quiet champion. Some people just hate the domination he has at the moment (as well as want to root for Andy or Marat because they think they are cuter!

) but I say let the other guys get out there and work their asses off to get better like Martina did when Chris dominated and Chris then had to do herself to compete with Martina. Let Andy find his mojo and get out of the TV studio and learn to do something other than serve.
I think we are seeing something really special in Federer and I look forward to him being around competing for Slams for years to come.

Well, Marat is cuter.
People can root for whomever they want for whatever reasons they want - cuteness, style of play, fashion sense (the lack of Dominic Hrbaty fanatics is no coincidence, my friends!) - but to say Roger was a smug SOB does seem a bit extreme. The dominant players are never the most popular. It's human nature to root for the underdog. But there's nothing not to like about Federer, really. His game is as beautiful as tennis gets, he is confident and secure as number one but always respectful of his oppontents, and he is affable in both victory and the rare defeat.

Did anyone catch Federer on ESPN's Hotlist today? It was pretty good. They were asking him a ton of questions. Here are some of his comments.
1. Pete Sampras was the greatest ever without question...He says he grew up a Sampras fan...While he appreciates the compliments, he says its hype...Finally stated it was hard to believe that he or anyone could play better than Pete at his best..
2. Said Agassi may have beaten him if he had won the 3rd set...He said he never lost faith in his skills but Andre was hitting the ball unbelievably well...
3. Said Serena is his favorite WTA player; obviously Roger likes em thick wink
4. Said the Wimbledon title is the one he covets the most..and that if he could only win one more slam it would be Wimbledon. He also said he really wants to win the French at least once..said that patience is keeping him from winning the French Open
5. Said Nadal is the most difficult opponent for him
6. Said Rod Laver is the player he most wants to be compared to.
7. Said as a young teenager he was an ass**** on court like McEnroe...But he is happy he matured and grew out of it..

Like many others, I really wanted Andre Agassi to win yesterday. I am proud of what Andre accomplished, but I am also realistic. I think that Roger Federer was a complete gentleman yesterday. It was a difficult situation for him, considering that the crowd was completely for Andre. I think it's great to have someone like Federer in the game (even though he took out two of my boys in this Open--Agassi and Olivier Rochus). Assuming that Federer remains healthy, I think he could be the greatest tennis player in history by the time he retires.
