Full Version: Orioles Hire Mazzilli

The lowly Orioles have hired former Yankee first base coach Lee Mazzilli as their new manager. He'll have quite a job on his hands. The O's do have some pretty good young pitchers, but they've had a losing record for 6 years in a row. I always remember thinking he was quite the hottie during his playing days though.

He played for five major league teams over 14 seasons, including a stint with the Toronto Blue Jays, where he became friends with Mike Flanagan, currently Baltimore's vice president of baseball operations
Proving once again, that it's who you know. Good luck, Miz. I always admired those early 70's O's teams; not so much when they eliminated the Angels from the playoffs in 1979 though!

He sure was, and there were some interesting stories around... is he still married?

Mazzilli may have been a hottie during his playing days with the Mets but this will turn out to be another TERRIBLE move by the O's....just because hothead Mazzilli (who I SHOULD like since he is a fellow Italian from New York, like me originally) was the first base coach for the Yankees makes him more qualified than Hargrove, Little, or even Perlozzo to manage the team? rolleyes.gif .....hell, Maz was out of baseball completely for SEVEN YEARS after he retired until he begged New York to offer him a job in their minor league system not all that long ago....the O's may have some nice young talent to build around (Bigbie, Gibbons, Roberts, among them) but with "leadership" such as this running the team, I'm afraid that the Red Sox, Yanks and the rest of the A.L. East will not have to worry about the O's competing for a playoff spot for the foreseeable future.
