So far, it looks like Monica's injuries were not serious. Luckily, both she and her mom were wearing seatbelts. Hopefully this will not keep her out of the Australian Open.

I hope the DWI driver gets more than the j/o in Germany who got a way w/ atempted murder! Hingis is my fav, but for Crying Out Loud you gotta love Seles spirt! Plus her obvious love of the game! I wonder about Wimbeldon, but so many other Grand Slams were there for her! Yeah, we will never know, but that M'Fer stole her chance! (I do doubt any Wimbeldon title, 4sure)

Thank god she's okay...what a fighter...
We'll never know how many slams she may have won but all water under the bridge now..she's still a very active force in tennis and is by no means finished yet...and she's a lucky woman in that her stabbing wasn't crippling, and that she's won so much money in her brilliant career...Can't wait to see how she does at the Aussie Open...

My brother called me last weekend to tell me Monica had been in an accident and was suspected of DUI..Im like 'what the HELL are you talking about'..I hopped online and quickly corrected him in saying that Monica was HIT by a drunk driver..SHE was NOT under the influence. Im just glad shes ok, no serious infuries =) Shell ALWAYS be my favourite womens player. I can almost guarantee she would have become the ONLY womens player to win 4 French Opens IN A ROW if she hadnt been attacked..and yes, how many more slams on top of that =) Shes gonna have a great 2002 =)
Monica played great this last weekend in beating Anna Kournakova in Denver..I was thisclosetogoing..it would have been a dream come true =) instead I had to settle for tv =)

I definitely hope Monica recovers & kicks ass at the Aussie Open! When I heard about this drunk driving incident, I was like "Oh no!" After all she's been through already, she certainly didn't need any more personal drama. I will always admire Monica Seles for the classy way she has handled herself, despite the tragedies that have befallen her. I think it would behoove the younger players of today -- Hingis, Kournikova, the Williams sisters -- to take a lesson in humility & class from Monica. (And yes, I am thoroughly convinced Monica would hold more Grand Slam titles than Graf today had she not been stabbed). Go Monica!

I think everyone in the tennis world both pro and fan agree that Graf's career went into overdrive after Seles was removed...the simple fact that Monica had won 8 of the last 9 grand slams that she had entered before the stabbing tells the whole story...but, let's remember that we were all robbed of classic Monica/Steffi grand slam finals; they were extremely competitive with each other and probably would have split most of the grand slams for those two and a half years....but, she's not thinking about that anymore, she wants one now and if she can get a draw devoid of Venus, she can do it, I really believe that. Venus and Lindsey are her most formidable opponents but with so many tough hitters, she may not have to play them in a GS...She beat Hingis, Capriati, Henin, Serena and even Cljisters once in 2001; she can beat them all again in 2002 especially if she's kept up the explosiveness training in the off season...the Hopman Cup is about to start and she won that last year with Jan-Michael (who left his underwear in my bedroom last night- so we can get a feel for how she's playing in the next week or so.....
Jordan - it's good to know another big Monica fan is here on Outsports! Happy New Year!

Hey Bryan - I totally agree with your sentiments here. That Graf/Seles rivalry of the early 1990s was just beginning to take on the greatness of the amazing Evert/Navratilova rivalry which preceded it. In Graf & Seles, we had two absolute fierce competitors, yet two very different personalities. And this contrast made for some of the most compelling Grand Slam title matches of the decade: that '95 US Open (can we say 'drama'?!), the '92 French, 10-8 in the third (ummmm, heart attack!) and the '93 Australian (can two women hit the ball any harder than that?). To my mind, what makes a rivalry great is when two already remarkable athletes push one another to new heights of greatness. And Monica & Steffi certainly provided that type of motivation for one another. We can only imagine the classic confrontations that never took place because of that freak in Germany.
As far as 2002, I would give anything short of a limb to see Monica win another Slam! I think the hard courts of Melbourne or Flushing Meadow might be her best bet. I agree that she can beat anyone but a healthy Venus. So she'll need the luck of the draw and the help of some dark-horses. Monica owns Capriati, can hang with Serena, can smack around Hingis, and has stronger nerves than Lindsay. I hope Monica can pull it off, somehow. If there is such a thing as karma, then Monica will. After all, the idea of Jen-Jen winning two Slams in one year seemed a lot more unthinkable than Monica winning one more, just a year ago. So anything can happen.
BTW -- I was wondering why Jan-Mike wasn't picking up his cell last night! I'm gonna have to have a little chat with that boy if we're gonna last. ;~)
Cheers & Happy Holidays to all you fellow tennis fans out there!

Well, it seems the drama for Monica continues. I've just read on cbssportsline.com that her older brother, Zoltan, was arrested and being held in jail on drunk driving charges! He apparently lost control and rolled his car, had to be pulled from the car by rescue crews. Was then found to have a blood/alcohol over twice the legal limit. This comes less than a month after she and her mother were hit by the drunk driver. I'm glad I don't live in Sarasota where these two DUI incidents have happened!
Poor Monica! It'll make it more interesting to see how she pulls through yet another family crisis.
