One of my all time favorite players (and hotties) Robin Ventura announced his retirement after the Dodgers loss to the Cardinals in the NLCS yesterday. One of the best gloves of his generation, he was also the active career grand slam leader. His 15th inning slam in Game 5 of the NLCS in 1999 beat the Braves and helped set up the Subway Series.

Au Revoir Robin

He was always one of my favorite players when he was with the White Sox. It was a big loss to the team when they let him leave....damn, cheep owners.

He was my favorite player during his brief tenure with the Yankees (he looked so damn fine in pinstripes biggrin.gif ). A really nice, laid-back guy (although Nolan Ryan would disagree).

Hey, maybe he can join Todd Zeile in Hollywood? They can go all Ben&Matt and co-write a romantic drama about two closeted ballplayers who carry on a torrid, secret love affair throughout their careers before retiring together in Hollywood, where they co-write a romantic drama about two closeted ballplayers who...

Robin is my favorite player of all time, so I was very saddened to see this news today. Not only was he a great all-around player (excellent hitter and fielder... in my eyes the best third baseman of the 1990s), he was also a great clubhouse leader. He led some very good Sox teams in the mid-90s (including the team that would have won the '94 Series), and I think his clubhouse leadership (as well as his grand slam single) helped lead the wild card Mets to the Series in 2000. The teams he played on always seemed to perform well, which may be partly attributed to his presence. He's also involved in a great deal of charity activities off the field... an all around class act.

I was hoping he'd stick around for another year to get to 300 homers (he's at 294 right now), but I wouldn't be surprised if he sticks around baseball, either as a coach/manager or a broadcaster.
