Was just thinking about Anna K the other day and then stumbled across this bit of info on ESPN.com:
QUOTE
After years of enriching others -- the WTA, the paparazzi, the cast of \"Me, Myself and Irene,\" the staff of Page 2 -- Anna Kournikova has finally decided to invest in herself.
The stakes are low, but the pressure is still on Anna.
Rather than accept a wild-card berth into the $1.2 million German Open in Berlin, which is this week's big-money stop on the women's tour, the top model in tennis is slumming it at a USTA minor league tournament in Sea Island, Ga., where the grand prize is a piddling little $3,000.
Kournikova, whose world ranking has slipped from No. 8 to No. 72, has flopped in the first round of her last three WTA tournaments. In an effort to rebuild her patchy game and sagging confidence, she's dropping down to the minors -- much as top-ranked Andre Agassi did after his ranking slipped to No. 141 five years ago.

Actually, it's not a bad draw, all things considered. But then again, I'm a big softie...I seem to like everyone (except Conchita Martinez, that is...I'm sure there is someone else I like/I think plays good tennis).
Anyway, Amy Frazier is there, and so are Lil Osterloh, Kristina Brandi, and Maria Sharapova...
Anywho, here is the draw:

Well, Anna did manage to win her first match at the Cloister cup. According to
The Story it wasn't her best match, but she survived it. Actually, her opponent retired in the third set trailing 3-0.
From the sounds of it, Anna is dealing with so many demons on the court. After losing the first set and then coming from behind in the second to take a 5-4 lead, she was given a warning for delay of game. It says she responded by saying "I'm scared." Yikes. She did manage to win the next four games though.

Anna won more convincingly today, against a Slovakian I've never heard of who I guess was recently out of tennis for a year. Next she's got Sunitha Rao, a young American. And then ... possibly ... Maria Sharapova!!! Something tells me that match would get more coverage here in the states than even Capriati v. Clijsters!! Which sucks but whatever.
The draw is here:

Don't be fooled by Anna Kournikovas beauty - she does have talent but thinks she know's what's best for her.
She was impossible to coach at The Boleterri Academy. Anna needs to be humble, get a coach like Brad Gilbert who will force her to look at her game. She should step up to the plate and get rid of all the distractions or she'll be known as the model who played tennis. She's filty rich however, if she would win a couple slams, that would be worth so much more.
It's good she's in the Challengers, she needs the match preparation and work on her confidence. Give Brad G a call Anna...

I think all of us here agree with you Kiperoni...some of us have suggested that Special K. get some serious coaching. I've recommended someone like Courier - he'd whoop her ass and get her real match tough.
I think it could be a good thing that she's facing demons - admitting that she's scared, for example. Saying it out loud isn't always a bad thing, right? I think she's taking some steps in the right direction, and I hope she does well this year. And *not* because she's hot, but rather because she does have some latent talent.
Anna does have talent, but putting unreasonable expectations on her--like winning slams--is not going to help. She was overhyped from the start. At her peak at 18, she was not the equal of her top contemporaries (Hingis and the Williams Sisters), nor is she more talented than some of the players who emerged after her, like the Belgians. With great coaching to rebuild her mental game, and a total retooling of that serve, maybe she can reach the bottom rungs of the top 10 again. But I really think her talent level is more like that of Patty Schnyder and Elena Dementieva than it is like the top players.

Anna Kournikova needs topspin. She makes too many mistakes with those perfectly flat shots. Under pressure, her shots start to fly or go into the net. I saw Anna's match against Widjaja (sp?) at last year's US Open and it was such a farce. She couldn't keep the ball in the court. She'd go for winners and her shots landed ten feet out. Anna has the talent to challenge the top players when she's playing well, but succeeding in tennis is about winning when you're not playing well. Every day is different and Anna doesn't have the tools to protect her game from the off days.

Well, Anna didn't need topspin to beat Sunitha Rao, 6-3 6-3, to advance to the semis. She'll face Maria Sharapova, who came from behind to win her match in 3 sets. There's a very cool article about the tournament on ESPN's page 2:
http://espn.go.com/page2/s/merron/030509.html I can't believe I'm getting my hopes up for a $25K challenger tournament, but with Amy Frazier out of the way, a win tomorrow by Anna puts her in the driver's seat to win the whole dang thing. As a confidence builder, it couldn't hurt. If nothing else, she's getting some match play, and that has to feel good.

Was wondering what happened. Another missed opportunity for Anna. From ESPN.com:
QUOTE
A thigh injury forced Anna Kournikova to withdraw from the Cloister Cup before her semifinal match.
Kournikova quit the tournament Saturday after a practice earlier in the day. The withdrawal advanced fellow Russian Maria Sharapova to the final, where she beat Australian Christina Wheeler 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday.
Kournikova was first injured April 9 at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C.
She struggled through her quarterfinal match against Sunitha Rao on Friday, which she won 6-3, 6-3. Kournikova's tightly wrapped thigh gave her problems throughout the match, and she was limping by the end.
The Cloister Cup was Kournikova's first event since she was first injured.

OH NO...
Kournikova ousted by qualifier at USTA event
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Top-seeded Anna Kournikova lost to rookie Bruna Colosio 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-4 in the first round of the USTA Women's Pro Tennis Championship on Wednesday.
Colosio, ranked No. 384 in the world, won two qualifying matches earlier this week to earn a berth in the 32-player field. The 72nd-ranked Kournikova, who was bothered by a left thigh injury that forced her to withdraw from the Cloister Cup over the weekend, was the only player in the top 100 entered in the USTA Pro Circuit clay court event.
Colosio held serve just once in the third set but broke Kournikova in each of her five service games. Kournikova served 15 double faults in the match, including two in the final game.

While she clearly, in retrospect, was highly overrated, she still has to go down as the single biggest disappointment of this era in tennis. Grand Slam wins were obviously expecting too much, but to never, ever win a single tournament, especially when you look at some of the women who have won at least one!
I actually think Iva Majoli is a bigger disappointment than Anna, just not as hyped. In retrospect, her French Open win looks like pure fluke, but at the time she was 19, she had been ranked in the top 10 for a year and a half, was on her best surface. She had 6 WTA titles to her name and had reached at least the fourth round of the French every year since she was 15. For her to win only one title since and be out of the top 50 at 25 is pretty damn disappointing.
I also would consider Marcelo Rios, Magnus Norman and Nicholas Kiefer bigger disappointments than Anna.

Sorry but I've got to disagree JC. Fine, Majoli may have flamed out too early, but she won titles, including a Slam. How can that even approach Anna's level of underachieving? As for the men you mentioned, I agree they've all underachieved, but they've all at least won a tournament. And nobody expected nearly as much from any of them. Anna's now losing in the first round of challenger events.
I don't mean to sound like an Anna basher. I'd actually love to see her regroup and get back in the game. She's one of those players that make it much more interesting when she's in the mix. I just don't hold much hope at this point.

Well, Anna's injured. It says something to me that she's still trying to scrap thru matches and salvage her career.
I mean, yeah, it's an embarassment and disappointment. I'm just hoping the media doesn't harsh on her too bad such that she calls it quits before she gets a chance to get that win.

I agree with B Man, she just pulled out of the Cloister Cup less than 4 days ago from an injury. I was suprised to see she was playing again so quickly. I give her credit for swallowing her pride to try & regroup & play on the smaller circut, but she should really give herself time to heal before jumping back out there...she could cause herself more harm.
I guess Anna's CAREER has been more disappointing, but I feel the other players downward spiral has been more disappointing because they accomplished so much more before falling apart. I never thought the lack of a title was that big a deal, because at the time she was only playing in Tier 1 & 2 events and it's really tough to win those in women's tennis. Elena D. just won her first title, and Jennifer hasn't won one in over a year, so you can play at a pretty high level without winning tournaments. But I never really believed Anna could make it higher than #4 in the world, because I felt Hingis & the Williamses would always be better. In contrast, in the spring of '98, I really thought Rios was the next great player, a future Hall-of-Famer. My expectations for Kiefer were comparable to Anna, but he's struggling to qualify for ATP events now, so his situation isn't a whole lot better.
I guess other people had bigger expectations for Anna K. than me, but I just don't think they were realistic. I really believe her Wimbledon SF run was a fluke, like Alexandra Stevenson, and Clarisa Fernandez, and Pam Shriver's U.S. open final appearance. And I do think the overwhelming pressure of being the most talked about marginal top 10 player of all time overwhelmed Anna. I think she'd probably be far better off if the press would leave her alone. Daniela Hantuchova seems to be in danger of suffering the same kind of career breakdown for the same reasons.

An interesting take from Wertheim's latest column on Anna's situation. He certainly seems to be implying that Anna's injury may not be real.
QUOTE
Speaking of USTA events, for the second week in a row, in an effort to apply the defib paddle to a dying game, Anna Kournikova played a $25,000 Challenger. For the second week in a row, she fell deeper into despair. Two weeks ago in Sea Island, Ga., Kournikova abruptly withdrew with an, ahem, injury shortly before she was to take the court to play Maria Sharapova in the semifinals. Last week in Charlottesville, Va., she didn't get out of the first round, falling in three sets to a player ranked No. 384 in the world. Adding insult to (reputed) injury, during the match at the Boar's Head Sports Club, hecklers drove by blaring Enrique Iglesias tunes from their stereos. After the match, Kournikova's conqueror, the formidable Bruna Colosio, exclaimed that Kournikova's serve was so weak, \"I could almost hit an overhead off of it.\" (As a rule of thumb, when you're a former top-10 player and you're getting dissed by the No.384-ranked player, it's generally not a good sign.) Afterward, Kournikova skipped out on the mandatory media session, earning her a whopping $250 fine. Lots of you wrote in trashing Anna, but I think we have to give her some credit for swallowing her considerable pride, admitting her game isn't WTA Tour-level right now and beating the bushes. (What adidas thinks of lavishing millions on a player who is performing at the Boar's Head Sports Club is, of course, another matter.) At the same time, something obviously has gone dreadfully wrong here and Kournikova's career clearly is at a dire crossroads.

Anna's agent says that her nagging back injury may force her out of tennis for good. From ESPN.com:
QUOTE
In the latest issue of French sports daily L'Equipe, agent Phil De Picciotto admitted that the 22-year-old ravishing Russian may be forced to dramatically cut back her playing schedule -- if she is able to return to action.
\"Considering the state of her back, Anna is unable to to feature in tournaments regularly,\" De Picciotto told L'Equipe. \"The past six months have proved that she has a real desire to play, but even if she feels better, she is not fit enough to play as much as she used to.\"
Over for Anna?

I've always liked Anna and always waited to see her do well. This would be a shame, but at least it gives her a way out, which may be what she wants. How hard must it be for her to have gone from being such a promising junior and to get all that attention and have failed so miserably at being a professional (singles) player?
I hope this isn't the end of Anna K. I'd still like to see her win that Tier III title some day! wink

I was amused to see this Q & A with Mark Philipoussis.
Q. What do you think about Anna Kournikova doing reporting for a TV network here?
MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: I don't know to be quite honest. Never gave it much thought.
Why would he give it any thought? Somehow I suspect that ATP players are not as interested in Anna K. as the media.
