What's the call on this. I pick Venus in straight sets over Serena as she's playing much better than Serena and is more focused.
Serena is not 100% and I watched play Schiavone and she looked tired on some points.
What say you???

I also am going to go with Venus over Serena. Serena is just not at 100% yet. It should be close though I think.

I say Venus, but in 3 sets, not too, she can play a bit erratically against her sister, the key would be the attitude she had early in the season, not allow Serena to dictate from the 1st point, because then Serena is dangerous. Venus must be aggressive from point 1. But I do hope she wins. Not that I don't like Serena, I just like Venus better :-)

Venus wins 7-6, 6-2. How do you think she'll do against, presumably Kim, in the Quarterfinals? Win, loss, tough 3-setter, easy 2 set win?

I imagine she'll play better than she did today. The match was not good. Neither one seemed to be able to settle down enough to exhibit some control over their shots. Probably too wired to actually let their feet work. That's usually what happens, the footwork goes bad. Serena hit so many shots into the net, not even close to going over. Venus looked a little better, but not much.
Venus is still a favorite, esp. now that sister is out of the way.

I think Venus is going to beat Clijsters and then Sharapova to get to the final. I'm going as far as saying Venus will win the US Open. Against either Davenport or Henin Hardenne.
Did the see the 2nd set w/Serena how she was moving well - I think she got tired and John Mc remarked that she's flatfooted.
Could this be another turning point in the Williams sisters saga where Venus will continue to dominate.
Venus talks about tennis being a "marriage" and is committed 100% to the sport. Nice to hear

a HOT MESS!! Thats what the match was. I mean I don't ever expect them to play their best but Serena was just awful in that second set. I was at the match and it was just eerily quiet. The first set had better tension but the second was just a flop. People weren't really rooting but thats normal. No one really roots harder for one or the other.

I don't think Venus will be able to get past Clijsters. The Belgian is playing great tennis and Venus hasn't gotten bacl to her Wimbledon form. Besides, this is not grass; she will not be able to assert herself as she did in the All England Club. Im going with Clijsters to win it all finally. I think it would be very fitting: a year in which the slams are won by the two Williams and the two belgians!!

I'm surprised it was as close as it was in the first set. Serena looked terribly unfit. Not as bad as Wimbledon, but so many shots she didn't even make an attempt. I hope the rest of this year she gets herself back into shape and plays more matches so she can get back near the top next year.
I agree, Islander. I think there will be an emotional letdown for Venus and she will be vulnerable. Bummer. Even if she gets past KC, the draw is way too tough for her to stay consistent.

This is just what Serena needs, though. I mean, she totally dominated Venus when she was at the top. Maybe the fact that Venus has beaten her twice this year in straight sets will finally get her to do something about her fitness. She looks like a grazing cow out there!

Kind of reminds me of when Agassi got a little pudgy back in the early 90s. He still had some good results, but his fitness (physically and mentally) kept him from getting past the quarters at several majors. Maybe Serena should hire Gil Reyes.

People were saying the same thing at Wimbledon after she ousted Pierce as well. =) I'm not necessarily disagreeing with your sentiment ... I really like Clijsters in this matchup.
Having said that, Venus is such an unknown commodity on the court. I favor Venus over Sharpie on hardcourts and she has to have a mental edge over almost anyone in the bottom half of the draw, *shrug*. IMNSPO, if she can get past Clijsters ... no small feat ... she should feel great about her chances to win the trophy on Saturdayt.

It's now official. The hype for this matchup is just Paris Hilton-overblown. It was just another boring round of 16 match. And I'm glad Serena lost after her audacity to wear $40,000 jewelry on court while people are starving and drowning in New Orleans. I realize she had palnned this before Katrina hit but she could have stopped wearing them at some point.
The reason I find the jewelry as tacky as I do is her really lame response to Katrina-announcing she'll donate $100 per ace and bringing up the fact that a window broke in her mansion last year during a hurricane while flaunting such extravagant baubles. How about donating the cost of the earrings Serena?

She is donating the earrings for auction with the proceeds going to hurricane Katrina relief, so it looks like she is trying to make amends. I don't think she realized that the $100 per ace amount would come across so badly.
