Full Version: Throwing cell phones at players!

Sean Burroughs of the Padres says that he was hit by a thrown cell phone at Wrigley Field. This comes a few days after the Rangers' Carl Everett was hit in the back of the head by a thrown cell phone in Oakland.

Soon they'll be announcing, along with all the other "don't go on the field/don't touch a ball in play" messages: "If you throw your cell phone onto the field, PLEASE turn it off or set it to 'vibrate' so the ringing doesn't disturb anyone." eek!

I so don't get this. A bottle or something I could see (though I wouldn't necessarily approve), but cell phones aren't really cheap. And if you throw a cell phone on the field, I would think it would be pretty easy to figure out who it belongs to. Maybe they're throwing other people's cell phones? I don't know.

This made me think about something else, too: If (hypothetically) there's a gay guy currently in the big leagues thinking about coming out, this has got to be a deterrent. These guys are getting stuff thrown at them for no reason. Imagine if you're a player out on the field with the baggage (in the view of many fans, I would think) of being openly gay. Not good.

From what I understand, the latest Cell Phone Incident happened because the guy grabbed it from someone else who was chatting away on it during the game. Seems this guy had been drinking quite a bit and just got really pissed off at the cell phone holder.

Boy, can I relate to that, especially after a few brewskies. As a Giants season ticket holder, there is this guy that shares some season ticket seats close to where I sit and he is on his cell phone for each entire game he's present. He has a rather loud voice and it just appears that he's trying to impress people around him throughout the game by talking "big business" deals and how much money he's making out of this and that.

I've been extremely tempted to just grab the phone and throw it too! I've tried giving him dirty looks throughout these games and even one time asked him politely if he could limit his conversations, but to no avail.

I just think talking on cell phones during games should be limited to short messages of importance. But, I wouldn't mind seeing them banned from the games completely! sad.gif

The guy was wrong for throwing the phone onto the field. But if what Billsf reports is correct I'm thrilled that somebody had the balls to take on one of those cell phone morons. So f**king rude. If you are so important that you need to be on your phone 90% of a baseball game, then you probably shouldn't be at said game. Then the other idiots who are waving to the cameras while on their cell phones. "Ooh turn on ESPN dude, I'm making an ass of myself and blocking people from seeing the game. Wicked cool dude!".

Ban cell phones from stadiums!!!
