Favorite Monica win: when she defeated Venus in the quarters at the 2001 (?) Aussie Open. It wasn't the title, but it made me so incredibly happy. And it was a great match.

Happy Birthday Monica!!! I met Monica when I was working at the Olympics in Atlanta 1996. I had just graduated high school when I got the job at the tennis center. I watched Monica practice almost everyday and sat beside her father as he watched also. He was the nicest guy. Even brought me a Nike USA hat that Monica was wearing during the event. I was ecstatic. Monica also let me take a picture with her several times and one of the pics made it to my hometown newspaper.
Cheers to a fabulous person and wonderful champion! COME BACK SOON!

Monica beat Gaby at the Olympics that year. Well, you could almost just fill in whatever you wanted after "Monica beat Gaby ..."

Nonetheless, Happy Birthday to the original 'big babe.'

God I miss seeing her play. I liked her from the get-go, although I do remember not liking her for like a week when she first burst on the scene and beat Chrissy at an event in Houston (I think). I would love to see her come back, but at 32, you just wonder if she can, even though she has had several years off throughout her career.
As far as I am concerned, pure class. Some of these newer girls could learn a thing or two from her.

Good memory Shep. Losing that match made Chris really think seriously about retiring. She didn't play the French that year because she didn't have the drive to play the long points on clay. Of course, she saw how Monica took Steffi to the wall in the semis of the French, so helped her feel better about losing to a clear up and comer. Poetically, Chris' last best match was against Monica at the US Open in '89, when Chris played beautifully, and Monica was probably a little intimidated.
My favorite Monica match: loved her guts in the '91 semi against Capriati and the '92 French final against Graf. No fear...each played only to win. But the one I enjoyed the most was the '98 French semi (I think) against Hingis...Monica had lost several in a row to Hingis, but came out smoking and was, for that match, a reflection of the player before the stabbing.

The US Open semi against Jennifer still ranks as the greatest wmen's match I've seen. The tennis was brilliant, but you also knew you were watching the onset of a new era in the sport. It's since become known as Big Babe tennis, but that day all I could think was "my god, these two girls play like men."
Happy Birthday to Moan-ica. WE LOVE HUH!!

Careful...now you know Hingis got in deep do-do about that type of statement.

Amen, Good Hands! That's one of my favorite matches of all time, too. It looked like she had never lost those years to the stabbing, she looked like the Monica of the early 90's, no doubt. Kicking the living tar out of Hingis made it that much better. It was bittersweet, though, since she lost the finals to Sanchez-Vicario. That one must have hurt, especially since her dad had passed away just days before.
Happy birthday, Monica! You're a great champion as well as a great lady!

My favourite match was her comeback win in the 1995 Canadian Open. She had been away for three years, was not in good shape, was a wildcard entry and didn't play her best tennis but she was at her determined gutsy best.
It was quite emotional.

Happy Birthday Monica!
Women's tennis has sorely missed this true superstar who always demonstrated that a champion really can be determined, professional, and gracious. A comeback appears unlikely though surely the reception would be unbelievable if she did.
The matches previously mentioned: over Capriati at the US Open, Steffi at the French, Hingis at the French, and Venus at the Australian are all wonderful reminders of the level of tennis Monica was capable of...I especially love her whopping Hingis at the French, and also when she beat Martina twice during the california hard court season a few years back - Those match wins were carried out by an in shape, uninjured Monica. So many of her late 90's and early 2000's losses were due to injuries and lack of conditioning. But her career has been glorious, full of great highs and some terribly unfortunate lows. I'm glad to hear from some of the commentators that she's very happy these days and looking fantastic.
Happy Birthday Monica!
