If so, are you as stunned by our comeback this season as I am? I was still following the guys, of course, but had pretty much given up hope on getting to the postseason. I can't believe we've covered so much ground. Throwing away Friday night's game was painful, but yesterday's win was huge. I feared we'd do our usual of just falling at the feet of the Braves after giving them one.

Give up on the Astros.....NO WAY!!!!!
After a small slump, Lance returned with gusto.
I was pleasantly surprised Saturday. I also thought the Braves (sans my Javy ) would route the Killer B's straight to the slubhouse for the season.
I had to get to work by the fith inning and it was difficult to tear myself away from the TV.
Two games out of first .... Go 'Stros... Go

Of course, you have had a little help from the Cardinals collapse. I'm surprised that the Astros haven't been able to plug the gap and get any closer.
The Cardinals are having that sort of tragedy-filled season that the Astros used to have in abundance back in the 60's and 70's. (Anyone else remember the Don Wilson suicide? Or the JR Richard stroke?) It would be some sort of weird cosmic partial-payback if the 'stros were finally to benefit from this happening to someone else.

Why are you surprised we haven't been able to plug the gap? With as far back as were, we would've needed to go undefeated during this winning stretch to do it. We got as close as one back and are now two back going into today's games. I'm very happy about that and hope the upcoming head-to-head games will turn things in our favor.
My mom can still get emotional when J.R. Richard is mentioned.

Dangit! The Braves-Astros game today isn't on TV out here in Cali.
Guess I'll just have to go the beach.

This comment leads me you're a bit too young to personally remember the J.R. Richard story, which is truly one of the more fascinating and tragic life stories in modern baseball. In case your mother is too choked up to tell you the real story (and it speaks well of her if she is), here's the whole story nicely told on a single webpage:
J.R. Richard TributeThe real story would make a blockbuster movie. Read it and weep.

Despite their problems this season, the Cardinals were doing quite well up until about two weeks ago. I can't IMAGINE what changed about the Cards in the last two weeks to make them fall apart the way they have.

Nope, I'm not too young to remember. I just meant that my mom gets teary-eyed whenever J.R. is mentioned.
