While the tennis world watches the Amelia Island tournament, there's an interesting one featuring all European players (except Zimbabwe's Cara Black and Tunisia's Sfar (and I guess Kazakhstan's Selyutina)) going on in Estoril, Portugal. Not that you'd know it from the Estoril Web site, which features only the male players (only three of whom are Top 20, so what's the big whoop?).
Anyway, one of the players, Marat Safin's sister Dinara, is already onto the third round with a three-set upset of Martina Sucha. She'll next play Maja Matevzic, who is a fast-rising young Slovenian on her way to the top 30 - watch my words! Of course I also said that Anna was on her way back to the Top 10 so what do I know.
Also, can top seed Angeles Montolio repeat last week's form and make it two for two? Will Magui Serna again challenge her in the finals (and perhaps win her first tourney ever)? And what about Bovina!! Okay, nobody cares about that last one.
15-year-old Dinara Safina has made the third round at Estoril. She may be a player to keep an eye on.

Is Safina the true Great Russian Hope? Someone's gotta be!! If my calculations are correct, it's not just Anna on the no-titles-winning train. Dementieva, Bovina, and Panova have combined for zero titles. Petrova, Krasnoroutskaya, and Jidkova have combined for zero titles.
Myskina won a title at Palermo in 1999. Likhovtseva won a title in 1997 and one in 1993.
THAT'S IT!! All these women are Top 100 players. Four of them are Top 40.... In fact, of the nine women in the Top 40 who haven't won tournaments since 1999, 44% are from one country.
What's going on here?

Go Dinara go! Little Safina is in the semis against a player who's previously only been in one WTA semifinal. She's got as good a shot to make the final as she's had to win any of her matches.
Am I right in saying that whoever wins the Estoril will be winning their first WTA title??
