The MFY are at Fenway for a three-game stand starting tonight, the first meeting of the season for the "rival" teams. Roger Clemens is scheduled to pitch Wednesday night, going for his 299th win. Faggiddaboudit.

Meanwhile, right now we're in the top of the first with two outs, Fossum has thrown 38 pitches for no strikeouts, and the score is already 5-0. Ok, third out is a K, there goes Fossum and here come the Sox...

- - Nine innings later --

Well, it's only one loss out of 19 games this season.

Yankees win, 7-1. All is right with the world. smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

What does MFY mean?
fenwayguy
Actually 7-3, for what it's worth. It turned out to be a really good game after the top of the 1st. In fact if it weren't for that ugly half-inning , we woulda won, dammit!

MFY? The Y stands for Yankees.

Nothing sets a Yankee slump right quite like a meeting with the BoSox. wink tongue.gif

Pedro was scheduled to pitch tonight, but called in sick with a pulled lat. Drat! They're covering him with second-stringers facing Jeff Weaver... eek!

Nice win last night for the Red Sox, who are now officially my absolute favorite team. (I officially hate the MFYs, too.) Nomar's hit streak is, what, 21 or 22 games now? Nice.
William1865
Alas, Nomar's streak is over.
Cattledog
Yeah, the Yankees finally showed up and actually played a game for 9 innings. As bad as they have played, if they win the rubber game tonight, they still would have taken both series from Boston so far this season. They would also only be a 1/2 game out with a series against Detroit coming up.
SoxFaninJP
Cattledog - No Yankees fans allowed in DC.

I was at Yankees Stadium on Monday watching my Sox beat up on Clemens in the rain. It was glorious. I had great seats behind the Sox dugout. Wore my Red Sox cap and just sat there grinning. It pissed off the Yankees fans to no end. It was a happy day for me.

Yankees fans shouldn't get too excited about yesterday's game. Both Manny and Hillenbrand hit E-NORMOUS balls just foul that if they had stayed fair would have made that a close game. Yankee's pitching is getting beat up recently. We'll see if the Moose (who I liked when he was in Balto) can reverse the trend tonight.

GO SOX!

According to Bud Selig and Major League Baseball, there are no BASEBALL fans allowed in DC, either! biggrin.gif

It just totally sucked that Mussina wasn't given the win. Those rules really suck, he worked a brilliant game.
pat125
Sorry about that Bill. Rivera was able to get the cheap win (to my benefit in the fantasy league) despite getting clobbered. But in a postgame interview, Rivera said he felt bad about blowing the win for Mussina.

Well, that's 2 out of 3 for the Yankees again. Hopefully, this will pull them out of the slump.
Thumper
Are the Yankees and Red Sox playing again? Gee, I hadn't noticed. Actually thats all I noticed. Every ESPN game is the yankees/Red Sox. Nobody in this part of the country gives a flip about these teams. Why can't we get regional coverage? Can't ESPN send two guys to cover other teams in other parts of the country? It's not like they have to set up production facilities. Local affiliates have that part covered. All ESPN has to do is send the comentators.

Sounds like the BoSox are looking to shoring up the pitching staff. Pending Diamondbacks owner Jerry Colangelo's approval, Arizona will send Byung-Hyun Kim to Boston for third baseman Shea Hillenbrand. Do you Red Sox fans like this trade?

As much as the Red Sox need help with their relief, parting with Hillenbrand for Kim is luicrous!

Theo, DON'T DO IT!

fantomas
Theo did it.

Sucks.
William1865
I love the Red Sox, but I haven't been a fan long enough to really know the specifics on every player, and I'm not so intense a baseball fan that I can weigh in on the pros and cons of individual trades. So let me just make some very general observations.

1. I like Shea Hillenbrand. He seems like good people. Thus...

2. This sucks.

To anyone from ESPN who may be reading this: If you want me to come on Baseball Tonight and discuss these thoughts further, call my agent. Thanks.
Bill W
Man, you guys really need to read "Moneyball" (post coming)...

Rob Neyer on why this deal is a steal FOR the Red Sox:

"Hillenbrand is almost exactly what the stats say that he is: a pretty good hitter for average, but without much power and without any plate discipline at all... and doesn't play particularly good defense at third base.

"... Byung-Hyun Kim is good. He's 24 years old, he's probably the hardest-throwing submarine pitcher that ever lived, and as a major-leaguer he's has a 3.26 ERA and 380 strikeouts in 323 innings... we know Kim is a great relief pitcher and we know the Red Sox need a great relief pitcher.

"We don't know if the Red Sox should, at least temporarily, send Kim back to the bullpen. It sure is worth thinking about, though."
William1865
Yeah, but Hillenbrand's cute.
mets57
shea's absolutely hot.

david dellucci and shea hillenbrand....nice combo.
Bill W
Clearly you two are not GM material. tongue.gif
fenwayguy
You're all correct -- Hillenbrand is popular with the fans, it sucks, he's wicked cute and this deal is right for the Red Sox. biggrin.gif

As we all know, Theo plays by the numbers. Hillenbrand is doing well at the plate (.303 ytd), a very decent infielder this year and comes cheap for the D'backs at $407,500. Arizona needs a good right-handed hitter, which Shea is. BK, despite his unfortunate (and very expressive) moments of fame as closer in the 2001 World Series, has achieved 55 saves in 65 opportunities for '01 and '02. Plus he's versatile, expected to pitch for Pedro while he's on the DL, then step into a much-needed closer role with awesome rookie Brandon Lyon as his alternate.

Much as I'll miss seeing Shea-Babe, it's a good move on Epstein's part.

This trade will also put Bill Mueller permanently into the third base position, which is a very good thing. Mueller has been making a GREAT contribution this season as both batter and fielder. In fact, he may soon replace Shea in my heart...

PS- The new goatee looks good on Mueller. (Wish I could find a better pic, he's more handsome than this action shot shows.)

The team had a travel day to Toronto yesterday, and once the Mueller-Kim deal was done, Theo followed them there so he could give Hillenbrand the news in person. When their meeting was over, he returned to Boston and got back to work.

What a thoughtful, respectful thing for him to do.* I love these guys.

* On second thought, maybe not.

Every analysis I've read on the Hillenbrand/Kim trade ... whether on ESPN or on here ... analyzes it from the Red Sox perspective. Even Neyer, and he's a West Coast guy.

Let's look at from the D-Backs perspective. And from that perspective, my analysis is: What the hell were they smoking?

The D-Backs motto must be: don't trust anyone under 30. This is an OLD OLD team. They had one decent player under the age of 25. They don't have many others under 30. This is an old team that just traded their youngest reliable player. Things are going to get really bad in Phoenix long before they start getting good again.
fantomas
Both teams have been faltering...are they going to let Toronto in the mix too?
fenwayguy
You got that right, Fantomas. The Blue Jays swept the Yankees last weekend, just finished a three-game sweep of the Red Sox this afternoon. Not only are the Yankees and Boston playing sloppy ball, Toronto's bats are hot-hot-hot -- and we're not just talking about Frank Catalanotto... who went 3 for 4 today, btw, and scored four runs.

After Tim "Woof-Daddy" Wakefield allowed 6 runs on 10 hits in the first four innings, a whole committee-full of relievers (including BH Kim) gave 'em up one after the other, for a final score 11-8 Toronto. Yesterday it was 10-7 (L-Fossum), Friday 13-2 (L-Burkett). Can you say debacle? C'mon boys, take a deep breath...

The Blue Jays are just two games behind the Yankees and one-half behind the Sox. Hell, the Orioles are just four and a half out of first place. eek!
SoxFaninJP
And if Pedro doesn't come back soon AND Derek Lowe come out of his slump (I mean it's just a little bump on the nose), the Sox could easily slide into third.

And looking at the Yankees, there's very little there to be scared of anymore, excluding Soriano, so don't count Toronto out of the AL East title hunt. They swept both us (Sox) and Yankees this month.

Still, GO SOX!
Cattledog
Both the Yanks and Boston must have about 50 games each left with Tampa Bay--and they only have a handful left with the West. I think what the Blue Jays have done so far is fantastic. In fact I see a potential manager of the year type situation in Toronto--that is, if Kansas City wasn't playing so well. But, I think we have to be realistic. It will still be the Yankees and Boston by late July and August. And, of course, the Red Sucks will be dropping off in late August like they usually do. The Yankees need to find a way (read: better pitching, fielding, and hitting) to compete in October with the likes of Seattle and Oakland.

GO YANKS!
Munson Man
I think the Yankees will be fine. The Blue Jays will just edge out the Orioles for third place.
SoxFaninJP
Munson, I think you're giving the O's too much credit. Mora and the kid Matos are on fire, but they'll come back to earth, and then they're left with Ponson and Johnson as their pitching. I think it's more likely that the O's compete with Tampa Bay for the cellar.

Sorry to get off the Sox/Yanks topic. I'm hopeful that the Sox may not fade in August this year as Pedro is on the DL early this year, maybe that means he'll last 'til the fall.
fenwayguy
(Tangentially related to this thread's subject, soon as the D'backs picked up Hillenbrand, they designated veteran 3B Matt Williams for assignment...)

I decided this deserves its own thread.
