NCAA to take look at 'Noles
Gov. Jeb Bush helped FSU persuade a high school player to sign with the school.

TALLAHASSEE -- Florida State may be facing a secondary NCAA violation -- one that would warrant essentially a slap on the wrist from the governing body -- after Gov. Jeb Bush delivered a favor to university President T.K. Wetherell.

Bush admitted this week to sending a message to New Jersey high school football player Myron Rolle, the top-rated recruit in the country according to some services, encouraging him to come to the Sunshine State. And, more specifically, Florida State.

And now -- with Rolle already on campus -- the university is preparing to send an explanation to the NCAA.

"The NCAA is aware of the situation and has been in contact with Florida State University," the NCAA said in a statement. "We are waiting for the university to submit information, and we will analyze it to determine if any violations occurred."

Bush went on the defensive this week -- not because he may have cost FSU a finger wag from the NCAA but because he appeared to show the school favor when FSU wasn't the only state football power recruiting Rolle.

"The mistake I made was listening to the president of FSU say that [Rolle] was being recruited by Stanford, Duke, Notre Dame, Michigan," Bush said this week. "He failed to mention that he was also being recruited by the University of Florida and the University of Miami. So I would have done the exact same thing for the Gators and for the Hurricanes, I promise you.

"Truth be known, I'm a Hurricane fan," Bush said.

Bush several times this week referred to Rolle as a potential Rhodes scholar, suggesting that he was worth luring to the state as much for his academic promise as his football talent.

That angle could figure in FSU's defense to the NCAA.

*sigh* Yes, this is life at universities in Florida, who have decided that appointing former legislators such as T.K. Wetherill, former speaker of the Florida House (Florida State), and Frank Brogan, former lieutenant governor (Florida Atlantic), and, for that matter, Donna Shalala (Miami) as university presidents is the best and surest fundraising strategy that they can think of.

At least Wetherill and Shalala have academic backgrounds -- and Shalala was at the University of Wisconsin before she joined Clinton's cabinet. Brogan -- don't get me started....

Yep, when I think "rocket scientist", I think of T.K.

He must be one of the 100 or so fans that regularly fill the Orange Bowl for Hurricane home games. biggrin.gif

Don't worry, PS, we're floating in new fans every day! biggrin.gif

Yeah, that record crowd of 109,313 didn't help much last time the two teams met, huh?

Miami downs Penn St. 33-7.

In a touching scene, Taliaferro led the Nittany Lions onto the field before a record crowd of 109,313 at Beaver Stadium.

\"Before the game I was nervous but once I got out there all the nerves went away,\" Taliaferro said. \"I did just what my body told me to do. It was a great moment.\"

Among those caught up in the emotion was Paterno, who had a huge smile on his face.

But the euphoria was quickly erased by the powerful Hurricanes (1-0), who built a 30-0 halftime lead and handed Paterno his worst home loss since a 34-8 setback to Michigan in 1997.

But the stadium was full though. tongue.gif

So, you saying size doesn't matter? biggrin.gif

Oh, and 1999, Penn State 27, Miami 23 at the Orange Bowl. Attendance 74,427. That was your first home sellout in 3 years. You can thank us for the revenue later, I hope you put it to good use. Your game against Florida A&M that year pulled in 54,147. Despite that, you averaged for the season only 39,263 fans per game at home. Yikes!

I see this year you averaged 45,310 fans. At that rate of improvement, you might sell out the stadium on a regular basis in about 30 years. wink Better tell them to start rowing faster. rolleyes.gif Geez, what would happen if you stopped winning?

You related to GatorJamie? She thinks attendance is more important than head-to-head results on the field. 33-7 on your home field. tongue.gif

Btw, how many national titles has that attendance gotten you?

Ummmmmmm... well, head to head, on the field, OK. Penn State holds a 7 to 6 game advantage all time against the blowhards of Miami.

As for National Titles, '82 and '86 (you remember that one, don't you? 14-10 over the Canes, Testaverde intercepted 5 times). But then there's the matter of those undefeated seasons in '12, '68, '69, '73, and '94 where the pollsters had their heads up their... but that's another story. And that doesn't count all the one loss seasons.

Oh, and let me know when your program gets to 770 wins. I'll even let you play your games in an empty stadium. Not that it would be much of a stretch from the current situation... biggrin.gif

Ahhhhhh, talking smack about football in February.

Maybe Miami should build a canal to the Orange Bowl.

Maybe then, their attendance would expand do to a majority of the fan base using their primary mode of a transportation- A RAFT. biggrin.gif

OK, as long as we're being brief, let me know how many wins your program has all time.

All in good fun. Well, mostly. biggrin.gif Though I suppose we have completely hijacked the thread and it's totally off topic.

Don't mind Aubie. She's just trying to score brownie points by "telling" on us.
