Full Version: College Football Trivia, Round 3

This week's round has no "theme", other than involving win-loss records.

1. Since the NCAA began compiling the "Toughest Schedule" statistics in 1979, what team holds the record for the toughest schedule for a single year?

(Note: this is an end-of-season rating based opponents' win-loss record for that year, not a pre-season rating based on opponents' record the previous year.)

2. What team holds the NCAA's "Most Improved Season" record?

3. Since 1937, what seven "Most Improved" teams also won the national championship?

Bonus question: What was the very last NCAA game to end in a tie?

Good Luck!

Jim

"No theme"?

(sneezing sound) Bu**Sh**!

Watch out kids, it's a trick question! (I'm bizzee before a meeting so I can leave early and party with PhillyFan and William1865, so I can't google the specifics, but beware... wink )

Well, we know it's NOT Nebraska! biggrin.gif
NorCalHusker
Where the f&*% did that comment come from?
NorCalHusker
1. The statistics I saw indicated that the NCAA began keeping track of the "final toughest schedule" statistics in 1977. The all-time leader is the 1978 Notre Dame team, with an opponents winning percentage of .709. If we're sticking to your post-1979 time frame, Notre Dame still wins: 1985 Notre Dame with an opponents winning percentage of .707. (I find it weird that they don't include bowl games.)

2. Most improved team: 1999 Hawaii, who improved 8.5 games from their 0-12 1998 season to post a 9-4 record.

3. Most improved teams since '37 who also won an NC: 2002 OSU, 1981 Clemson, 1972 USC, 1962 USC, 1960 Minnesota, 1939 Texas A&M and 1938 TCU.
NorCalHusker
Bonus: Final Div. 1 tie game was a '94 32-32 tie between Mizzou and Hawaii.

Extra credit to gmg if he can explain (statistically, not with a gut feeling) how Nebraska's schedule is statistically so much less difficult than other schools' that it deserved the flip response. biggrin.gif

NCH, No can give stats, but it was a common discussion point up until the past two or three years that NE had a really easy sked.
NorCalHusker
Exactly my point. Just because ESPN radio jocks scream "easy schedule, easy schedule!" doesn't mean it's true. tongue.gif
gmginsfo
Yeah, but it wasn't just ESPNners who were saying it - it was almost everyone not dressed in red! biggrin.gif

BTW, just so you know I have no animus against Nebraska, I had a very pleasant evening a few years back in Lincoln!
NorCalHusker
Cool. Were you in Lincoln for a game?

Now, now boys... keep it civil.

gmginsfo, your profile indicate you're an Illini fan, and I don't see them popping up on "toughest schedule" either. wink

Hmm... I didn't think anyone else would find that huge pdf file on the NCAA website. Yes, all those are correct.

Additional trivia on "toughest schedule": Nobody else has posted a schedule rating above .700 - the 3rd and 4th toughest schedules since 1977 belong to Auburn in 1983 (.688) and 1998 (.685).

Sorry, that is not correct.

BJ, Yes, the only list my Illini pop up on are the "Clutchingest Teams" list, which is why I rely upon my two years' residency in A2 to legitimize my claim to Michigan fan status. biggrin.gif

Maybe if the Chief were allowed to dance again we might be doing better with Native Spirits guiding us instead of computerized logos. frown

hmmm with GJs cough I'm gonna take a guess that the last tie was the Florida-FSU 31-all game
NorCalHusker
Interesting. Then there's a reporter in Honolulu who needs to be corrected. biggrin.gif See note at bottom of page

No, I think she's just commenting on the fact that I've "themed" nearly all my past rounds. The "Choke at Doak" was not the last tie game.

I have sent an email to the sports editor of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin advising him where he can find the correct information. biggrin.gif And no, I'm not going to tell you yet!

Jim
BikeJocks
What? Nobody knows what the last tie game was?
BikeJocks
Time's up!

The last tie game was November 25, 1995: Wisconsin 3 - Illinois 3.

(DCBucky, I'm surprised you didn't know this one!)

The next game which ended with a tie score after four quarters was the 1995 Las Vegas Bowl. The NCAA had decided to try out the tie-breaker system on a trial basis for Div 1-A bowl games in 1995, and it was adopted for all Div 1-A games for the 1996 season.

LOL, Jim, I thought fer sherr that this was an all-F$U theme, based in part on that horrid game in 199whatever, but also on the semi's improvement and their tough scheduling near the end of their independent status.

Gay Goters!
