Tipster says company linked with Bonds, track stars in steroid probe

A U.S. anti-doping agency received an anonymous letter with a syringe containing a new "designer steroid", allegedly obtained from BALCO. Upon devising a test to discover it, they retested samples from a track-and-field meet and got "several" positive tests.

This entire issue needs exposition. Wonder how many other such substances are out there. considering that the illegal drug trade in general seems to stay one step ahead of law enforcement, I do not envy those folks their jobs.

According to this ESPN report Barry Bonds, Kelli White, and others have been subpoenaed by a federal grand jury.

QUOTE
San Francisco Giants star Barry Bonds and sprint champion Kelli White were among the 40 athletes subpoenaed by a federal grand jury in the budding steroid scandal, Agence France-Presse reported Saturday.

According to the report, Victor Conte, the president of under-investigation BALCO Laboratories, told the San Jose Mercury News and the San Francisco Chronicle that his top clients are being asked to testify about tetrahydrogestrinone, or THG.

Conte told the newspapers that seven professional football players and five Major League Baseball players were among those compelled to testify in hearings on the West Coast that are expected to begin next week.

\"I do know that Barry has received a subpoena,\" Conte wrote in an e-mail to The Chronicle. \"There are at least seven NFL players that I know of, plus at least four professional baseball players, that have received a subpoena. Most of the other athletes are from track and field. My understanding is that 40 elite Olympic and professional athletes have been subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury.\"

In the June issue of Muscle & Fitness magazine, Bonds enthused about Conte's physical fitness regimen and nutritional advice, saying, \"I'm just shocked by what they've been able to do for me.\"

As of this weekend, Jason Giambi was also on the subpoena list. He says he visiited BALCO to inquire about "nutritional supplements". Plus they give a free tattoo with every purchase.

George, Joe, quit that scurrilous scandal-mongering about The Greatest Player Ever In The History of Baseball.

Bill Romanowski's name was mentioned in a report I saw. File that under: Least Surprising News Ever.

Is there a list of the 40 people called before the grand jury? I wonder which other sports are included, because I wouldn't be surprised to see a tennis star or two.

Interesting column I read today...

Subpoenas and suspicions could have ramifications for baseball

major league baseball is already saying they have no way of going back and checking old samples for THG.

at least the other sports have always TRIED to give the impression they frowned on steroid usage.

as a traditionalist and a stats freak, i always loved the timelessness of baseball records and loved comparing players from different generations. the last 15 years or so have thrown things way out of kilter and i suspect steroids are the major reason...

i know i'm in the minority, but this is one guy that has been TURNED OFF to baseball (once my greatest love) due to the proliferation of offense.

Medal swap: Last week Canadian cross-country skiier Beckie Scott was able to upgrade the bronze medal she won at the Salt Lake City Olympics to a silver (she may upgrade to a gold, yet), as the Russian gold & silver medalists both tested positive for banned substances.

American gold medals in track are in jeopardy as Calvin Harrison tests positive for banned substances. Also in question are Kelli White's 100m gold medal in the World Championships, a US relay medal from the 2000 Olympics... When the dust settles they may be giving medals to Eddie the Eagle and the Jamaican bobsled team. biggrin.gif

QUOTE
Harrison's positive, if confirmed by the testing of his B urine sample, also could put in jeopardy the United States' 4x400 gold medal at the world championships because he ran the opening leg on the Americans' winning team.

He also was a member of the United States' winning 2000 Olympics 4x400 relay team, which could have its gold medal taken away because Jerome Young ran in the early rounds of the relay after failing a 1999 doping test.

The International Olympic Committee has called for an investigation into why Young was allowed to run.

World indoor 1,500 meters record holder Regina Jacobs also has tested positive for THG, The Washington Post and The New York Times have reported, and American and British newspapers also have said U.S. hammer thrower John McEwen has tested positive for a banned substance.

Looks like those who predicted baseball's wimpy steroid testing program wouldn't catch anyone were wrong...

Test results

With 5-7% of 1438 testing positive, that means at least 72 MLB players are on steroids.
