Since the San Diego Padres are leaving Qualcomm Stadium after this season, they figured this was as good a time as any to bring back the San Diego Chicken, nearly 30 years after his first appearance & he'll ne honored with a chicken bobblehead giveaway! As was written in the morning paper, Ted Giannoulas, the man in the Chicken suit, was always "poultry in motion," even once riding a horse across the outfield in a sketch called "Indiana Chicken and the Ballpark of Doom."

If it weren't Rosh Hashanah, I would definitely make a beeline towards San Diego for the weekend, just to say goodbye to that ugly (for baseball) park.

Do the Padres have other plans for the final games there?

Someone explain to me why the Padres' mascot is a chicken. I've always wanted to know. Shouldn't it be, like, a priest or something???

He started out as the mascot for radio station KGB, and became really popular from appearing at the park and then somehow changed from the KGB Chicken to the San Diego Chicken. I think there were some legal things going on--he wasn't happy with the money he was making or something.

I remember many years ago when the Chicken came with the Padres to the Vet. They billed it as a sort-of "duel" with the then-upstart Phillie Phanatic.

Maybe the best thing about the Padres move from Qualcomm Stadium to Petco Park is that we'll finally have an answer to "why the chicken crossed the road."

Adam: "poultry in motion"??? Why, that's just fowl. rolleyes.gif

Found this at the Padres' official website:

QUOTE
Qualcomm was the birth, er ... hatching place of the San Diego Chicken.

In its first life, the chicken was the property of radio station KGB in San Diego but as it quickly became apparent, it was Ted Giannoulas who gave him life.

But on June 29, 1979, after a dispute with the station over rights to the image, Giannoulas emerged as the San Diego Chicken and a job became a career.
Also found the info I had asked about on the Padres' final Qualcomm weekend.
