Miami Hurrican fans -- I need your wisdom!
What is the significance of the logo the Hurricanes wear on their helmet, and what does it have to do with Miami or a hurricane? Its the thing that looks like a "U" - one half of it is orange, the other is green, and I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out what it is.
Also - when the 'Canes take the field, they are led by a mascot that looks like something between a duck and an angry parakeet, and for the life of me, I also cannot figure out what this has to do with Miami or a hurricane.
Please excuse my ignorance - your generous answers will allow me to enjoy the Rose Bowl in peace!

Miami designer Bill Bodenheimer suggested bucking the trend by using a "U", which could be used in ridiculously hokey slogans like "U gotta believe" and "U is great"
This is from an earlier posting about a neat helmet website:
The Helmet Project(p.s. I'm not a Miami fan -- but I love their President -- Donna Shalala!!)

The mascot is Sebastian the Ibis - the ibis is a heron-like bird that is indigenous to FLorida and other Atlantic and Gulf coast areas.
--> Edited for bird-spelling error and to add:

And what I have heard in the past is that the Ibis is the first bird to return after a hurricane, hence the connection to the university.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would become confused by a school having a logo or name that is supplemented by an additional mascot. Afterall, there are so many schools that do so.
In the south alone you have:
Tennessee - Volunteers, and a guy in a dog suit, not to mention the actual "volunteer" dude that strolls around in a coonskin hat and an actual hound.
Alabama - Crimson Tide, and a guy in an elephant suit.
Auburn - Tigers, and a golden eagle referred to as War Eagle.
North Carolina - Tarheels, and a guy in a ram costume.
And of course, the aforementioned Hurricane/Ibis dichotomy.
Southern teams are my forte, so I plead a measure of ignorance with regards to what other schools have going on in this area. No doubt there are plenty of other dual mascot situations...and I imagine some good folks out there will be happy to chime in.

And, of course, the Stanford Cardinal and the Tree.

I guess when Auburn plays for the national championship, I'll ask about that one.

You don't have to ask as most school's official websites have a separate area for athletics with full explanations of mascot derivations, historical traditions, et al.

Forget the helmets. I want to know if they didn't eat dinner because they are eating Nebraska alive. Hmmm. Erotic E on the half shell. Okay that's their motivation.

Zaac - surprised that your message is the first on Miami whipping on Nebraska!
I had to stop watching the game after Nebraska fumbled the ball on the kick-off return AFTER Erotic E's fumble set up the Canes first TD. It was just a bad start!
I turned the TV back on, in time for half-time, seeing the Cornhusker band playing, and the announcers talking about a 34 - 0 score!
I know the Colorado game set some new Nebraska records but if the second half of this rose bowl goes like the first half, that's the Canes scoring 68 points - even more than Colorado.
YIKES!

It's embarrassing. I feel sorry for the Erotic One and his seriously overmatched cohorts.

OK, I can't resist the temptation for double entendre, but did anyone else notice how much time E spent on his back?
And is that his natural position?
Nebraska looked like shit on a trisket. Of course, it doesn't help when the coaching staff continues to run the ball of every frickin' play, and discontinue the practice of passing once every lunar cycle.
Canes deserve the title.

The logo on the sides of Miami's helmets is the meteorological symbol for hurricane. It does not stand for University as many believe.

Though, Stanford has a tree in their logo. Go figure. They used to be the Indians and, in protest, the band came up with the tree. Pretty funny.

Stanford students voted one year for the best nickname for the school and maybe all of the NCAA
The Stanford Robber Barons!!!!!!!!
Of course, the administrators and alumni would have none of it.
Got to appreciate the humor in it and the general disdain for mascots by the student body.
