The Yankees officially stink.

I thought it was Jeter, but apparently Bernie Williams is now the straw that stirs the Yankee drink. And Williams may be out for the year.

The Yanks are "just" 29-22. Winning percentage only a fair .569. Two and a half games behind the Red Sox in the AL East AND a full game behind the Oakland A's for the wild card. (I know it's too early to be thinking about that ... unless you're the Boss.)

So ... when does the Boss start firing people? GM Brian Cashman? Manager Joe Torre? Maybe a random coach, like bench coach Don "Steel Plate in My Head" Zimmer? Or pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre? Maybe even the team "massage therapist," someone named Rohan Baichu?

Steinbrenner's got to start the rolling of the heads soon. Because? Because he's Steinbrenner and he's the Boss, that's because.

Who'll be first? And how soon? Any guesses?

(Edited to reflect the actual standings after the Memorial Day massacre of Rocket Roger.)

If ever I hoped to be a fly in Steinbrenner's office, it would be now. He must be shitting bricks and shouting a blue streak. I think Zimmer will be the first head to roll followed closely by pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre. And, if there isn't major improvement & soon, I bet even Joe Torre (the sports media version of a saint) won't be exempt from Steinbrenner's wrath, though Torre should be able to go un-fired.

The Boss is talking. From ESPN.com:

QUOTE
Yankees owner George Steinbrenner is upset about his team's play, but won't criticize manager Joe Torre, according to published reports Tuesday.

\"I'm not happy with them,'' Steinbrenner told the New York Post. \"We have to get straightened out. I think Joe will get us straightened out. It better happen.''

New York lost to Boston 8-4 on Monday as Roger Clemens attempted to win his 300th game. The loss was the Yankees' season-high fifth in a row. New York has also lost 12 of 13 at Yankee Stadium for the first time in club history.

\"I will not criticize him at all,'' Steinbrenner told the Post. \"He knows what has to be done. But he also has been given everything he has asked for. What he has wanted, we have provided.''

Steinbrenner signed Cuban pitcher Jose Contreras to a $32 million, four-year contract in the offseason. In spring training, Contreras lost the fifth starter's spot to Jeff Weaver, who has one win in his last six starts.

Contreras was sent to the minors in April with control problems, and spent time in the Yankees' minor league complex in Tampa, Fla., before making three appearances at Triple-A Columbus and one for Double-A Trenton. He was recalled recently, and again is pitching out of the bullpen. Since allowing five runs in a loss to Boston last week, Contreras has pitched five scoreless innings.

Steinbrenner was asked by the Daily News if he thought Contreras should be in the rotation instead of Weaver.

\"Yes I do. Right now,'' Steinbrenner told the newspaper. \"Because I think that Weaver has gone to too much of a thrower right now. He was great in the bullpen for us before. Contreras is not that type of a pitcher. He's a starting pitcher.''

Despite that, Steinbrenner also told the News that he didn't want Torre to feel pressure from him.

\"We spent a lot of money, got the people Joe wanted,'' Steinbrenner told the newspaper. \"It's his team to turn around. Don't bet against us, though.''

Steinbrenner told the Post: \"We are still going to win this. I'm confident. Don't bet against us. I believe our manager, Joe Torre, will get these things right.''
Munson Man
I think if the Good Guys lose to the Sox tonight or tomorrow Steinbrenner will be a lot less circumspect. I think Mel Stottlemyre is safe, but if I were a Yankee pitcher and my name was not Clemens or Wells I'd be a little sweaty right now.

If the slump continues much longer, Steinbrenner's mouth will be entering the picture more, with all sorts of threats, criticism, and firings. I'm not sure how Torre would react if Steinbrenner fired Stottlemyre or Zimmer, but it wouldn't be pretty.

As for the Yankee slump, it could mean that the Yankees are sliding towards mediocrity, but I doubt it. The Yankees went through slumps in the past few years and came out of it with flying colors. For example, the Yankees had a slump just as bad in Sept. 2000, and came out of it with a World Series win.

ESPN2 tonight repeatedly captured Fatnessbrenner grimacing, cursing and cheering at the Yankees' late inning near-collapse tonight. Mussina pitched a beautiful ballgame up till the 8th inning, then he started to unravel. Rivera came in and totally flubbed it. But the Yankees were able to come back and win. I think the problems are several:

1) the starting pitching staff, which is older, was carrying the Yankees at first, but now they are losing as most staffs do at times, and there're no bats to carry them;
1A) Pettitte has really faltered badly, Weaver's starts have been guaranteed losses, and Mussina, perhaps the top starter of the staff at this point, has basically gone into a strange funk in which, as he's done in previous years, he simply cannot win with some of the best stuff in the league.
2) the Yankees are not getting enough production out of their lineup. Jeter, Soriano and Mondesi are hitting, but most of the rest of the lineup is not, especially with runners in scoring position. Giambi has been atrocious, as has Zeile. They ought to ship him out ASAP.
3) the relievers have not been very good either. They're not as awful as the Saint Louis Cardinals, per se, but they are not up to the Mike Stanton-Mariano Rivera standard of old.
4) overall the team has played with lethargy. Soriano and Jeter really appear to give it their all, but without Williams's bat and with little onfield leadership from the other players, the team is sort of dragging itself along.

Steinbrenner's comments about Torre were, as always, aggressive and threatening. Fortunately Torre can deal with them, but the Yankees are going to have to do something about their hitting. And fast. Maybe Contreras can help them make up for it for a few months by pitching like the star he was supposed to be.

LOL @ good guys...

too funny! biggrin.gif

Yeah, I am really trying to resolve in mind if that was a Yankee victory last night. I was listening to Torre's comments this morning, and he has a tendency to put more of a positive spin on things (think the Anaheim playoff series) than need be. He claims that this could be a good thing, and that this may wake the team up. I am not sure I buy into this. Rivera just looks awful. Letting both Stanton and Mendoza go could ultimately cost Cashman his job. Giambi looks like he is a fog. With that said, they are only 1/2 game behind Boston, and have taken both series from them (at Fenway and at the Stadium). Detroit is coming up. This is a gift from the scheduling gods. They can get away from the Stadium as they have played better on the road. They can finally get this Clemens 300th victory (which is becoming a distraction) done. If they take 2 out of 3 in Detroit, and Boston can't get their next series won, they will be back in first. I don't think Yankee fans are worried about Boston--who has their own pitching problems. But, I do think that they are worried about the ultimate prize. Right now, they do not have the pitching, especially in the bullpen to even get through the ALDS. However, it is only May.

By the way, has anyone else noticed how well Toronto is playing, and how close they are to both Boston and the Yanks?
Munson Man
Yes, I have noticed that the BJ's ( biggrin.gif ) are sneaking up on the Yanks and BoSox in the AL East. Their 4-game sweep at Yankee Stadium certainly didn't hurt. Pitching will determine how well the Yankees do. Of the starters, Clemens has been consistent all year, Wells has been fairly good, Pettitte and Mussina started out on fire but then got very cold, and Weaver, after winning the #5 position with a superb spring training, has been really awful. However, Pettitte and Mussina both had strong starts the past two nights versus Boston, and they are pros, so I'm confident they'll be their reliable selves soon. The middle relief has been frightfully bad. Steve Karsay's elbow injury was a big blow, but I don't know how the team thought they wouldn't miss Stanton and Mendoza. Granted, neither of those guys have had great seasons thus far with their new teams, but it was a curious decision nonetheless. Rivera, to me, is the major worry. He's been rather fragile the past season and a half, and he just hasn't had that "automatic" air that carried the Yankees for five years - last night's game is the perfect illustration of that. Having said all that, I don't think the Jays have the guns to surpass them, and the Sox certainly can't be taken seriously with just Nomar and Pedro, with the chorus boys from "Damn Yankees" playing a supporting role. Having said all that, I do expect to see postseason baseball in the Bronx this year, and my guess is it'll go on for more than a few days.

Not really sure what to make of this acquisition. The Yanks got Ruben Sierra from the Rangers for a minor leaguer. Interesting given Torre's feelings about Sierra from his last stint with the Yanks. From ESPN.com:

QUOTE
Looking to add a lefthanded bat to their roster, the New York Yankees acquired outfielder Ruben Sierra from the Texas Rangers for minor league outfielder Marcus Thames on Friday.

A former Yankee, Sierra is batting .263 with three home runs and 12 RBI in 43 games this season in his third career stint with Texas. The switch hitter is expected to be used as a designated hitter and in left field.

New York needs some depth on its bench with first baseman Nick Johnson and center fielder Bernie Williams on the disabled list. Johnson fractured a bone in his right hand in mid-May and is expected to return later this month. Williams underwent knee surgery and should be out until July.

Sierra had his second stint with the Yankees in 1996 and did not get along with manager Joe Torre.

In his first book, \"Chasing the Dream,\" Torre called Sierra \"the toughest guy I ever had to manage. As much as I tried to talk to him about the team concept of baseball, he just never did get it.\"
Cattledog
Yeah, I read this in the paper this morning and was a bit surprised as well. I know Sierra and Torre never really saw eye-to-eye. I never thought of Ruben Sierra as someone who produces when needed or someone that has a great attitude. However, I used to feel the same way about Raul Mondesi. Maybe Sierra has grown up, and is ready for the big time. Because if he ends up in the Bronx, the fans are going to expect instantaneous results.
Cattledog
It's official... Sierra's back with the Yankees. I just don't know about this?
Munson Man
This is very puzzling. Torre despises Sierra; he felt Sierra was a clubhouse cancer his first time around with the Yankees, and the organization was supposedly concerned about his friendships with known gamblers. Sierra is the man who Tony LaRussa, when they were both in Oakland, described as "an idiot in search of a village."
FeverDog
Not only all that, but Sierra took #24. How can I wear my old Tino jersey to the Stadium now???

Wasn't something similar said about that hot slugger Manny Ramirez?

Fatsobrenner craves quick fixes, thus the acquisition of Sierra, who came very cheaply, who can hit and hit homeruns, and who patched over his differences with Torre.

Plus the Yankees needed another high profile Puerto Rican player (with Williams out)--got to placate those Bronx fans. They've got everyone else, though I wish they'd trade Weaver and 2 of the relievers for the Mets' Seo, who is so cute. Clemens has been consistent but not consistently great; Wells actually has been better. Mussina--what is UP with him? Pettitte has been skating on thin ice since about his fourth start.

Once again, I have to say it! Acevedo sucks! They need to get rid of him as soon as possible. Clemens pitched a good game. There is NO excuse for this! Also, the Cubs let them back into the game in both the 8th and 9th innings, and they leave a total of 5 guys on base. If I was Joe Torre, I would be doing a Bull Durham and throwing bats all over the floor, and ripping that locker room apart! Thank God, the Red Sucks have just as bad of a bullpen!
Cattledog
Anybody catch Torre's facial expressions? He was fuming! Between the errors, poor baserunning, men left on base, and of course, atrocious pitching, there is really not much to say. Now they've got a very hot Houston team coming into The Stadium on Tuesday. And once again, despite the 6 runs that Pettite gave up early, we have to think about that complete moron Acevedo, who gave up 2 more runs in a clutch inning. Why is this guy playing in the Major Leagues? Especially for the Yankees? If those next 2 runs weren't on the board for the Cubs, The Yankees still would have probably won the damn game. ...And a pickoff, with the winning run at the plate.

I don't consider myself oversensitive to issues of race, but as a Bronxite of Puerto Rican descent, I think you're walking a dangerous line with a statement like that, fantomas. I bet you wouldn't have dared to make that same statement, but using "Black" and "Oakland", instead of "Puerto Rican" and "the Bronx."

Please take this in the vain it is delivered. Just be more thoughtful in the future. smile.gif

Some more news from the Bronx Zoo:

Reliever Juan Acevedo was released by the New York Yankees on Tuesday, three days after giving up a three-run homer that spoiled Roger Clemens' bid for his 300th victory.

The Yankees also placed Cuban right-hander Jose Contreras on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 7 with a strained right shoulder.

To replace Acevedo, the Yankees have their sights set on Texas Rangers closer Ugueth Urbina, according to reports. A baseball official close to the situation told the Newark Star-Ledger that the Yankees have spoken with the Rangers about a deal for Urbina, even though the teams just struck a deal for outfielder Ruben Sierra last week.

Urbina, who signed a one-year free-agent contract with the Rangers last offseason, would have to grant the Rangers permission if they wanted to trade him before Saturday.

What are the chances he'd rather stay with the Rangers???
FeverDog
Urbina? Are you f'ing kidding me?!?

While watching the Philly/Anaheim game last night I began wondering if Steinbrenner could swing a deal for Rheal Cormier. Anyone know what his contract's like?

*Snicker* The Yankees are slumping? *giggle* They're old and unmotivated? *guffaw* Steinbrenner is acting like an ass? *tee hee*

Life is happiness indeed! So, how long before the New Yawk-based media start flooding national magazines with hysterical, hyperbolic stories about the Decline Of The Yankees? Those stories will probably hit the newstands just as the f**kers rip off a 10 game winning streak.

Yankees fans can get defensive when the ol' "They buy their championships" thing gets trotted out. Now, there's some justification to that but, as they point out, there's been a good core of players from the farm system. Where ARE those players now? It doesn't seem that anyone is coming up to replacing the fading starters and the pitching especially seems to be held together with spit and gum.

Few things would make me happier than if it was the early 70's, CBS-owned sort of days in the Bronx again.

What a strange, strange game. I've never seen a no-hitter where it wasn't one pitcher going from start to finish. With six pitchers traipsing to the mound, it was the most anticlimactic no-hitter you can imagine. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Yankees fire the hitting coach tomorrow........

A six-pitcher no-hitter! Bizarre. It's just not the same as one pitcher doing it.

Fabulous! Anybody know if this is a record for the most pitchers combining on a no-hitter? Six is pretty amazing.

Meanwhile, the rumour mill now has the Expos interested in picking up the services of one Senor Juan Acevedo. So I guess you may actually get your wish, MunsonMan. Deportation!!

Yes, Seph. It's the first six-pitcher combined no-hitter ever.

Does anyone know how they determine the Win in these things? Brad Lidge was credited with the win. He pitched 2 innings (6th & 7th), but not the most innings overall (that was Pete Monroe, with 2 2/3 innings (2nd, 3rd & 2/3 of 4th). Oswalt, Dotel and Wagner pitched 1 inning each, and Saarloos pitched 1 1/3.
Joe in Philly
Since the Astros had the lead since the top of the first and Oswalt (the starter) didn't pitch 5 innings, it's up to the official scorer's discretion to decide who gets the win. They're supposed to determine which pitcher was most effective. My guess is Lidge got the win over Munro because Munro walked 3 batters and Lidge walked none.
Cattledog
Now that the Clemens 300th victory is done, I am expecting the Yankees to concentrate on, well, playing all-around decent games on a regular basis. However, I believe Matt Morris is bringing in his (approximate) 3.10 ERA and a 7-3 or 7-4 record with the Cards into the Stadium. Andy Pettite is 5-6, and sitting around 5.40. It's time to start reversing that trend.
Cattledog
The Yankees certainly had no problems today. The ball was flying out of the stadium today. The only guy to get an RBI for the Cards (as of the 8th inning) is the beloved Tino Martinez, who knows this park very well. As bad as things have been, the Red Sucks and Blue Jays are still having to chase the Yankees.

Joe Torre is about to be fired as Yankee skipper. According to this report posted on ESPN.com: \"Boss denies he's unhappy with Torre\"

According to the Newark Star-Ledger, as quoted by ESPN:
QUOTE
Several team officials told the Star-Ledger that Steinbrenner was angry because Torre had been refusing to return his phone calls or participate in organizational meetings. According to the paper's sources, Steinbrenner also believed that Torre was acting this way in order to get himself fired and be able to collect the $7 million remaining on his contract, which expires after the 2004 season.
(Emphasis added).

This smacks of the old "vote of confidence," which usually pre-dates a firing by about two to four weeks. The re-signing of Torre nemesis Ruben Sierra, and the bungled announcement of Derek Jeter captaincy, really look like clues that Steinbrenner will fire Torre the moment the Yankees drop out of first by over a full game.
cubsfan1982
If Mad King George does fire Torre, then who does he hire as manager? Or is this going to be a Billy Martin redux where Torre gets hired and fired and hired back repeatedly?
Munson Man
Torre would never subject himself to the same humiliating treatment Billy Martin sought out. Didn't I read recently that Jeff Torborg had signed on with the Yankees in some capacity?
Bill W
Torborg as Yankee manager?!? Now that's a Mets fan's dream come true...

As Baseball Prospectus wrote here, "If Steinbrenner fires Torre... it will eventually be seen as a turning point in Yankee history, the moment when the fourth act of Steinbrenner's reign ended and the fifth began.

"It will also be a critical moment in the history of the Red Sox and Blue Jays, the day the door opened on their era in the AL East."
