Just in case you don't think MLB cuts the Men in blue slack (or at least did):
Two umps involved in sports betting in 1989As Rob Neyer writes in his ESPN.com column today, they should've been suspended for a year.

Hmmmm.....this story was in the newspapers last week, and it said both men were suspended by MLB for two years, as was Yankee bench coach Don Zimmer. There was simply never any formal announcement of it. The umps were "on leave" and Zimmer was "retired." Interesting sidenote: the ump Garcia is the one who called Derek Jeter's homerun into the arms of Jeffrey Maier in 1996, and is also one of the umps whose reinstatement after the failed strike is still pending by MLB.

In case anyone's interested, Major League Baseball does not prohibit us from placing LEGAL bets on sports other than baseball. However, because this is such a grey area and can so easily lead to problems, we avoid doing so (at least the guys I know).
When I make my very rare foray to Vegas, I don't even go into the sports book. I'll stick with the table games and occasional slots. Heck, I don't even go to a casino or Vegas itself more than once every few years, if that. It just isn't worth it.
