"A Northwestern University doctor destroyed Rashidi Wheeler's medical records within hours after the football player collapsed and died on a school practice field in 2001, lawyers involved in the case said Monday.

A university official confirmed the exam records do not exist and said it was the school's understanding that Dr. Mark Gardner had destroyed them. Gardner, NU's longtime director of student health services, resigned after Wheeler's death.

The allegation that the records were destroyed adds to the questions surrounding Wheeler's death on Aug. 3, 2001, and also calls into question whether university officials knew that Wheeler had been taking NCAA-banned supplements."
