I don't see any team of either league getting a sweep of the other, but I think the Angels will end up beating the Twins to play the Giants, who'll barely get past the Cards to play a full 7 game series; with the Angels being the World Series Champions. Does this make any sense at all???

It's a Parity Fest! I concur with Angels and Giants, since they don't have the homefield advantage, so why defy the pattern thus far? (And Cards-Twins just wouldn't be the same without Whitey Herzog bellyaching about that admittedly awful Hankydome... as much as a Twins victory would be worth it to see Selig wincing!)
Uh guys, we can't have separate threads for each league? When you have a unique one for every half-assed college gridiron game?

I agree. Separate threads for each LCS.

If the Angels beat the Twins, they'll have home field advantage in the World Series (as the WS is done on a rotation basis, not based on records or anything logical like that).
I'll actually watch the WS this year as it won't be Yankees v. Braves.
Tonight it's Kevin Appier for the Angels, Joe Mays for the Twins.
Denny Hocking is out because a teammate spiked his hand during the pile up celebration after they beat the A's. He's being cagey about who it was; he initially said Jacque Jones, but recanted. Now he says it was a teammate he had a feud with about a month ago? GeorgeVF? Twins fans? Any idea?
Should be a great series.

Thanks for the separate threads guys!
I just saw Baseball Tonight and they did a segment with Torii Hunter playing in the OF of the Metrodome. They had a camera attached to his cap, so you could see what Torri saw. Well actually you couldn't see the ball at all! God I love my Twins and the home field advantage they enjoy in the Dome, but that place needs to be blown up ASAP.
Anyway, I think this will be a great series. But the Twins starting pitching, which has been coming on as of late and did quite well against the A's, gives them an ever so slight edge. Twins in 7.

I'm expecting this to be one of the most exciting ALCS' in years....I think the Angels will take the series in 6 games (as great as it would be to see Bumbling Bud have to hand the championship trophy to the Twins)....after 42 LONG years of futility, curses, horror, and every type of bad luck imaginable this is the Halos year -- they'll win it for the old Cowboy Gene Autry.
As great of a story as the Twins and their loyal fans are (who went from having their hearts ripped out of em by evil Bud to mass hysteria in the Twin Cities) and as decided of a home field advantage as they have, they STILL play in the absolute WORST baseball "stadium" on the planet....between the baggies they use for walls, teflon they call a roof, and articificial turf that's almost unamerican -- the World Series should be played outdoors, on grass (with a big rockpile in left center field and Rally Monkeys on the scoreboard leading the team to victory? ).
The only thing I'm certain of is whoever wins this series WILL be the World Champs -- team chemistry prevails again over "highest payroll".....GO ANGELS!!....cuties David Eckstein and Jarrod Washburn and 23 other "no-name superstars" will do all the "little things" that will lead Anaheim to the Fall Classic.

Here's a stat that I just read on espn.com that I love: MLB teams with the 27th and 15th highest payrolls (Minnesota and Anaheim) are still playing while the teams with the 9 highest payrolls (Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Mets, Braves, Mariners, and Indians) are not....GO ANGELS!! -- they may not have the Rally Monkey on the road but that won't prevent the Halos from at least splitting these first two games in the Metrodome.

The Angels and Twins seem so well-matched, and both teams do so many of the "little things" so well, it's hard to make a solid, set-in-stone prediction. Just when I think it'll be the Angels in 6, I argue myself out of that and choose the Twins in 7.
Some old writer (Ring Lardner, maybe) said that when two teams are equally matched, go with the one which seems to be having the most fun. That has worked for me in a lot of different sports, but it fails me here since both teams seem to be having a whole lot of fun.... OK, Twins in 7.

Alright. THAT'S the Troy Percival I like to see: throwing 98 mph asprin tablets, not the Troy Percival who gives me heart attacks (see: Game 4 v. the Yankees).
Good job all around by the Angels tonight. Good starting pitching by Ortiz, the usual solid middle relief job, timely hitting etc.
On to Anaheim. Friday night should be incredible. This series is shaping up to be a classic.
Re: Francisco Rodriguez. Well, the Angels actually have a good GM FOR ONCE, Bill Stoneman. He knows the folly of trading away young pitching talent and Francisco Rodriguez isn't going anywhere unless another team can come up [Don Corleone voice] with an offer he can't refuse. Rodriguez is being groomed to be the set up man next year (replacing, thank Goddess, Ben Weber) and eventually, Troy Percival's replacement. He's a good one, that's for sure. The Angels have some good arms in their farm system and are determined to hold on to them.

Francisco Rodriguez has definitely looked impressive against the Yanks and again tonight vs Minnesota....and to think this young phenom was still in AA a few weeks ago, wasn't even called up until September, and had only pitched in 5 games at the major league level prior to this postseason (totalling 5 2/3 innings but with 13 K's -- pretty shrewd move of Stoneham and Scioscia to activate him for the playoffs)....I would say his days of pitching in the minors are over now....thank goodness he's not eligible for free agency for a LONG time because, despite his VERY limited major league experience, this guys potential is virtually limitless -- he's making all-star major league hitters look helpless at the plate and he's only 20 years old! ....also, considering Percival's age (33, admittedly not that old but he has a few miles on him for a closer), salary ($5.25 Million) and with his propensity for injury the past few seasons it's gotta be reassuring for the Halos to know that Rodriguez is seemingly ready to step into the closer role NOW.
I'm gonna enjoy watching him and the rest of the scrappy Angels win 7 more games this postseason and then really have a celebration at the Big A!....I know Rodriguez wasn't even 1 year old when the Angels collapsed in the '82 ALCS against Milwaukee (sorry to bring that up again Jim A.) but it will just make this year's playoff run all the more enjoyable!

Well, what gets me about this Angels team is that they don't seem to have heard about "Collapsing" or "Indian Burial Ground Curses" or any of that. As good a job as Ron Gardenhire has done this year, it'll be criminal if Mike Scoscia doesn't win Manager of the Year; it seems like the players completely believe in him and his calm demeanor translates to the players.
Huge game on Friday. Tim Salmon has a hamstring twinge; hopefully, it's not serious.

MikeOC, I hope your 401(k) hasn't tanked recently because you might need to cash it out to get WS tickets from a scalper. A guy at work sold 2 for the ALCS for $650 for the 2. It's crazy out there! :-)
Well, the Angels might end up regretting not making more out of that 2 on/1 out situation. Crap, I hadn't even finished typing that and Dustan "Shave. The. Hideous. Goatee. PLEASE!" Mohr dinks a base hit. I hope Scoscia doesn't panic and go to the bullpen too soon.
Shit. 1-1. That ball was catchable. For a while in past seasons, Erstad was at first and Anderson was in center fielder. Anderson was poor there, to say the least. He has a tendency to misjudge balls and doesn't cover ground that well.
Woo hoo! Troy Glaus!! Go you ex-Bruin! Wow. Maybe, just maybe, the Angels are For. Real.
Why I shouldn't have dissed Charlie in the Trees for his supposed lack of baseball knowledge: Great catch by Garrett Anderson. Way to go Angels.
Bring on Game 4.

Well, through some piss-poor planning, I had to leave during the top of the 8th inning tonight. I bought a ticket to the symphony thinking that the game would be in the afternoon. D'oh!
So, of course, all through the concert (music by Stravinsky & that notorious homosexual Tchaikovsky) I was thinking "Shit, I wonder if the Angels bullpen held etc." So, imagine my surprise to find out that they won 7-1. Whew!
Today's Los Angeles Times had an article about Angles fans. Here's a couple of quotes that I totally agree with: [quote]It's still early; in truth, these Angels, up two games to one on the Minnesota Twins in a seven-game series, are no further along than the 1979, '82 and '86 clubs that fell short in the American League championship series. But once they are finished, whenever they finish, what will the local landscape resemble?
Longtime Angel fans, veteran sufferers who shake their heads at the Thunder Stick-clapping Rally-Monkey-come-latelys [JA: DAMN RIGHT], believe nothing lasting will change until and unless the Angels:
1. Reach the World Series.
2. Contend again in 2003.
3. Field a winning, competitive team on a consistent basis.
Mark Howmann of Mission Viejo has been an Angel fan for more than 30 years. He was sitting in the Anaheim Stadium left-field stands on Oct. 12, 1986, which gave him a good view of Dave Henderson's playoff-turning home run. As soon as Henderson hit it, Howmann said he knew that the Angels "were going to lose the next two games" and the series to Boston. "I guess that comes from being a long-term Angel fan." He also realized that, for his psychological and physical well-being, it was time to emotionally divest.
"That was a tough fall there," Howmann said. "After that, I basically decided to be an Angel fan, but I wasn't going to get so worked up about whether they won or lost. And that's worked really well. I mean, I always track them, because I've been an Angel fan for 30 years or so. But I don't get emotionally involved anymore. I'd be insane. If they win, it's great. If they lose, well, that's what they do." [JA: I could be Mark Howmann of Mission Viejo; I did the exact same emotional disengage thing after The Great Collapse of 1995]
The key, (Angels spokesman) Tim Mead acknowledged, is what the Angels do with 2003. Consider how the Angels have followed their first three appearances in the playoffs:
1980: 65-95, sixth place.
1983: 70-92, tied for fifth.
1987: 75-87, tied for sixth.
"It's obvious that in the short term, everybody's going to be 'the Angel fan,' " Mead said. "You know, [Angel Manager Mike Scioscia] always uses that term, 'perennial contender.' He believes in that. We will convert people as we become a perennial contender."
Guy Gruppie of Arcadia describes himself as "lifelong Dodger fan" who never cared for the Angels, even while growing up in Yorba Linda. "No one has been more skeptical about the Angels than me," he said. "[Even] when they won their division in '79, '82 and '86, I was skeptical. I didn't take a liking to the team&;there was no emotional attachment to the team, even though I grew up in Orange County. Largely because it was a team assembled through free agency.
"But this team is different. And I have to admit that I followed their progress late in the year and I've come to the realization that they're a special team. They're a team built through the farm system the way the Dodgers used to build their success".
That's it exactly; this team IS different from the previous 3 teams in that it's largely been assembled through the farm system and shrewd, low-key trades. The other teams were filled with transient mercenaries, really.
I'll be over at a friends house watching the NFL on the Dish, but luckily he has a second TV in his bedroom for me to retreat to at 1:15.
Go Angels, I know, er, I think, well, possibly you can get it done tomorrow. I really don't want to see the series go back to The Hanky Dome because anything could happen there. And as the Angels 5 game losing streak late in the season when they were trying to clinch a playoff berth showed, it's truly not over until the last out with this team.
And, of course, big masculine hugs to MikeOC. Almost there, eh Mike?

I really do think the Angels will win the series. I would not be surprised if they end up having to do it in the Metrodome because I cannot see them relieving us Angel fans of drama and sparing our nerves. Here's hoping they clinch today....

3 HOME RUNS FROM ADAM KENNEDY!!? ....are you kidding me? -- he had 7 the entire season!....after the Twins scored three runs in the top of the 7th to erase the Halos lead, thoughts of '82 and '86 and the "Indian Burial Ground Curse" must have crossed the minds of at least a few of the long-time loyal Angels supporters in the crowd....but this is beginning to look like a team of destiny!....even when the bullpen faltered slightly in the 7th, another "unsung hero" emerged to lead em to the pennant -- it's just a matter of time now!
It doesn't matter whether they face the Giants or the Cards (and don't you know Anaheim is hoping for a grueling 7 game NLCS that will wear out the eventual winner) this team with no "superstar" is bound for glory!....and you can bet that Adam Kennedy will never have to pay for a meal again in Orange County.

This, of course, wasn't seen around the country. I'm guessing out there the station kept the Angels-Twins on. Here in Philadelphia (and presumably most of the nation) they switched to a brief introduction of the Giants-Cards game with FIVE MINUTES of commercials, then came back when the Twins had 2 outs in the top of the 9th, showed some of the on-field celebration and an interview with Kennedy, then switched back to Pac Bell for good. Same here. Not that I don't want to see the other LCS game, but since when has anything really decisive in a ballgame happened in the 1st inning? Anaheim had never won a pennant in their 41-year existence, that's history, and Fox goes to five minutes of commercials? I believe the Angels are a team of destiny. They have proven that you can win with good pitching and an outstanding offense of non-superstars. I couldn't believe the 10-run inning even as I was watching it on TV!
Looks like an all-California World Series, but at least this will have more appeal than the all-NY series a couple of years ago.
What an awesome show by Adam Kennedy as well. As a former Cardinal, we St. Louis fans have to be happy for his success. It would have been GREAT fun to see the Edmonds-led Cards vs. the Kennedy-led Angels in the Series, since they were traded for each other before the 2001 season began. But it looks like Barry by the Bay will be the theme of the NLCS.

As much as I admire the Twins' gumption, thank God we don't have to see any more games in the Hankydome this year.
I don't feel the Angels are so much a Team Of Destiny as a solid 99-win team... Kudos on the Autry remarks, Jim -- who cares about a dead ex-owner whose movies NOBODY has seen?
The Rally Monkey is just one more dollop of college-football brainlessness.
Per stud-watching, the cooing over Kennedy and Eckstein I can't relate to... I don't usually go for musclemen, but being in the middle of a Glaus-Fullmer manwich is something I'd sign up for! (The phrase Sexy Beast was made for caveman Brad.)

Re: Autry. I don't dislike the memory of The Wowboy because his movies aren't viewed anymore. I dislike it because it's rose-colored glasses nostalgia at its worst. He was A BAD OWNER and no amount of revisionism is going to change that. He totally meddled in baseball decisions and was prone to let people who kissed his ass to stay while people that stood up to his stupdity were dispatched. He was obsessed with competing with the Dodgers (a hopeless task) and made the front office a laughinstock of instability and chaos (something The Mouse continued until they finally fired that idiot Tony Tavares, gave the reins to Bill Stoneman and--notice the trend here?--quit meddling in purely baseball decisions). I highly recommend Ross Newhan's excellent book History of the Anaheim Angels for all the gory details.
This is how bad the Angels franchise history is: the numbers that they've retired:
26: Gene Autry
42: Jackie Robinson
50: Jimmy Reese
29: Rod Carew
11: Jim Fregosi
30: Nolan Ryan
So, let's review. Autry: Bad owner; Robinson: done by MLB; Reese: A COACH who's main claim to fame was that he roomed with Babe Ruth; Carew: Most fans remember him as a Twin (that's where his most productive seasons were)--he was never really embraced here because of his aloof personality; Fregosi: OK, he WAS the franchise for the first 10 years, until he was traded to the Mets for.....Ryan: a guy they let go because "all we need to do is find two 8-7 pitchers" (they never did find them) and who then went on for 13 more years.
Awful. As much as I hate the Dodgers, at least their retired numbers list is impressive--and they only retire numbers of players that make the Hall of Fame. Grrrrr........

unbelieveable. the final score doesn't reflect the struggle and excitement. wow. what the angels accomplished so far totally floors me. tip o' cap.
since i follow, the national league, am not that all familiar with the angels team - i support all california teams, though. but am very familiar with the resident hunks troy glaus, tim salmon woof, eckstein, erstud, gil, molina, wooten, and adam kennedy woof! his three-run dinger rocked the entire anaheim. impressive....any shirtless pic of adam? WOOOOF!
HOPE the giants close it out tonight. am an angels fan - until they meet the Giants in the world series.
congratulations, halos!

Those who have followed "The Hammerin' Halos" have noticed two recent references in The LA Times regarding "long post-game hugs" between Adam Kennedy and Benji Gil. Seems sort of odd for two guys competing for the same position to be so close. Kennedy also lept into Gil's arms after his dramatic 3-run dinger in yesterday's clincher. Anyone else notice this trend...GO Halos!!!!

I don't remember if this was asked before, but why is Autry represented by number 26?
