According to
ESPN's Jayson Stark. There's a 4pm news conference.

This should've happened last October. Addition by subtraction, let's hope the next guy has a clue.

I'm shocked shocked.
(Repetition of the word "shocked" being universal "Casablanca" code for facetious or sarcastic use of the term.)
Good riddance to the worst GM in baseball this side of Cam Bonifay. Who thought you could spend $100 million and have so little to show for it? He should be barred from baseball for life. The contract he gave Fat Mo Vaughn is far more of an affront to all that is good and decent than anything done by Shoeless Joe.

I agree he sucked as GM. But I found him to be hot.

Thank God Phillips is gone!
He didn't have a clue.
Cable T.V. should have a 'celebrity deathmatch' between Phillips and Bobby V. Huge ratings!!! I'd pay... Talk about woof... Bobby V is a stud!

He should be deported with former Yank Juan Acevado!
This firing is loooooonnnnngggg overdue to say the least.
When does the rest of the Queens housecleaning begin? Does anyone have any real trade value at this point? Alomar perhaps?

Yes, Phillips absolutely had to go. I'm just sorry Omar Minaya isn't still with the team--he's doing a decent job in Montreal (although no doubt he's constrained by MLB). I always thought he had good sense. It will be interesting to see what Duquette decides to do first.
As for trade value, there's really not much to speak of--Alomar maybe, Benitez possibly for the right team. It's going to take years to sort this out!

Not Benitez "possibly" -- he's their primary piece of trade bait, the way closers are obsessed over. He's going to the highest bidder, bet on it... Alomar is the more difficult sale, as he apparently has to be in the right environment, or he plays like he's in a stupor (ie, the last season and a half).
Billy Beane's assistant Paul DePodesta should be on any shortlist of GM candidates, along with Minaya.

I loved how this was reported on the back page of the New York Post.
The headline:
STEVIE NIXED Mets tell GM "you can go your own way." Hilarious

I was going to post something about that headline! I LOVED it. (You can tell I'm a major Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac fan!)
