A "Doh!" moment in Gainesville. Wonder what Ms. CrocJamie will think. biggrin.gif

"A large crocodile -- and not the school's namesake alligator mascot -- is featured on the cover of the University of Florida's 2003 football media guide.

A photo of Florida Coach Ron Zook leading the team onto the field is superimposed over the olive green crocodile. The words "Florida" and "2003 Football Guide" also appear on the front, but the word "Gators" is absent. Florida spokesman Steve McClain said he regrets the error.

"We asked for an alligator, we paid for an alligator and unfortunately we did not get an alligator," McClain said. "It's unfortunate, it's somewhat embarrassing obviously, but the bottom line is we thought we were getting an alligator."

from today's Washington Post.

What a crock! eek! eek! eek!

Not a good omen there, Zookie...

Next thing you know, they'll be putting wolverines on Wisconsin media guides, or casino employees on f$u guides. wink

Crocette, and what was this about UF thinking that they were academically superior to the rest of the SEC? ROFLMAO eek!

I heard that this morning on WJOX and thought I was going to wreck my car. I just hope we didn't put a Lion on the front of our media guide instead of a tiger!

I bet whoever in the SID department did that is crying crocodile tears right now. biggrin.gif

Go Crocs, GO!

I certainly hope this type of snafu doesn't spread to Los Angeles---I'd hate to contemplate what the USC Trojans would have on their media guide!

(my reply to the other post on this fun topic)

Rats, I knew someone would beat me to this. I was going to start my College Football Trivia 2003 Series early with the question: "What SEC school, a reputed institution of higher learning, incorrectly portrayed their mascot on their new football media guide?"

A school can't necessarily control the behavior of its athletes, but it can control its media. There can be no excuse for this goof. This is a BIG mistake. I mean, I could see it if the Delaware Blue Hens accidentally put a Rhode Island Red on their media guide... they probably have some poor student assistant doing it between washing the jocks and towels and hitting the nightly kegger at the frat house. But this is a school with an SID budget that's probably bigger than most D-III athletic programs.

No, gamecock, it will not be forgotten. Florida State and Georgia fans will get a lot of mileage out of this. Jim Rome had some great takes on this, and following his lead, Gainesville is now the home of the Florida Crocs, and their most vocal supporter on this forum will now be referred to as CrocJamie.

(Wouldn't the casino employees be better on the U-Dub guide?)

Some other possible "boners" eek! that could be the result of inattentive SID's (many courtesy of Jim Rome)

Notre Dame Fighting English
Michigan State Trojans
USC Spartans (or maybe USC LifeStyles?)
USC Hens
Syracuse Magentamen
Michigan Weasels
Ohio State Walnuts
Washington German Shepards
Oregon Geese
Georgia Tech Bumblebees
Miami Tornados
Florida State Cherokees
Texas Steers
Okalahoma Laters (gotta love that one)

But no, none of the schools made such a big blunder.... only the Florida Crocs!

Let's all leave Jamie alone. wink

Hugs AU Tiger! But I'll be muchmuch better after a cocktail. NO IT'S NOT GOING TO BE CROCODILE TEARS...

No need for a drink, hun. This whole story is overpuffed and inconsequential. Who the heck will care in a week?

From the University of Florida Museum of Natural History, the Gator/Croc FAQ. biggrin.gif

Unless the athletic department corrected it, this is the offending cover, crocodile and all.

Apparently, neither could the football SID...

But the croc actually looks great in the cover. Its lighter color and angled head work well for that particular design. Hell, maybe they'll sit on the "controversy" a few days and just stay with it. I'm guessing that they realized the error too late, took "Gators" off the cover, and then (wrongly) hoped that no one would notice.

But after further comptemplation, I'm changing my tune and embracing my reptilian cuzzin. In fact, I've already suggested to the Voice of the Gator Band that he put a bug in the director's ear to play "Crocodile Rock" in the stands. The "nyahhhhh....nyah nyah nyah nyah nyahhhhh" lick would be fun for the fans to sing at opponents. wink

In any event, as "controversies" go, and as that wise, wise gamecock pointed out, I'd rather have a minor bioclassification error such as this, rather than football players who arguably throw games, bet from their own locker rooms, or oversleep multiple final exams...

I'll take that Croc-a-Tini now! biggrin.gif

Absolutely! Plus it's better than the stupid Wisconsin blunder a few years back: in the quest for diversity on campus, they pictured on a brochure a group of students sitting in the stands at Camp Randall -- a couple of white kids (male and female) and one black guy. The problem -- the black guy was PhotoShopped into the picture. To make things worse it turns out he had been one of the more vocal critics of UW's diversity policy, and didn't even care much for football. oooops!!

btw -- CrocJamie -- great idea on "Crocodile Rock"!

.. and to BikeJocks -- love your idea of the Michigan Weasels -- it fits perfectly!

But CrocJamie... athletes are supposed to be stupid. Not the people who are OFFICIALLY paid in the athletic department.

.. and DCBucky, just be glad I didn't include the Wisconsin Wombats!

Some great humor out of the "This Is SportsCenter" commercial. I think it's John Anderson hunting with (Crocodile Hunter) Steve Irwin, waiting to attack at an elevator, and guess who comes out? None other than the UF mascot.
