Through all of the discussions we've had lately, I've been very confused. I cheer for Auburn and that's it. While I like other schools and enjoy seeing them win, I have no other allegiance other than to my alma mater, Auburn.
I grew up an Alabama fan. Like most people my age in Alabama whose parents didn't go to college, you naturally cheered for Alabama because of the dominance of the program during your childhood. I received a scholarship to Alabama and visited the school and, frankly, didn't like the school atmosphere. Nothing against Alabama there because I have lost of Bamer friends that loved it. I visited Auburn and fell in love and I've never looked back.
So, my question is, no matter who you admired during your formative years, is there any way that you can actively cheer AGAINST your alma mater and adopt another team? Personally, I don't see how its possible. Thoughts anyone?

Forgetting my HS, which since I graduated has degenerated into a gang-ridden hellhole where shootings regularly occur in the hallways and there have even been killings during football games, I'd never root against any of my three official alma maters, i.e., those where I actually studied or obtained a degree. I can say that with some confidence because they're all so geographically and divisionally disparate that they'll never come into competition with each other.
On the other hand, I am flexible in my loyalties when my schools are not involved. Thus, I rooted for IA last night against IU, even though many in my family went to IU and one of my bros in law is the son of one of BKnight's former assistants; I tend to support the underdog. If a school's in the Big Ten, I'll generally support it since I got my BA from Illinois, lived in Ann Arbor between u-grad and law school, and have spent time on every Big Ten campus except Penn State's. Sometimes I'll "adopt" a team who's on a roll, like Gonzaga or Valparaiso in hoops, although the latter's proximity to where I grew up is also a factor. And when I've no connection to a school at all, take the ACC or SEC, for example, I'll just sometimes root for whichever team I deem, in my own prejudiced, jaundiced and judgmental view of things, "deserves" it. wink

GMG great answer...I feel that same as you as picking certain teams to root in one time situations. Out of curiosity, which team do you pull for if Illinois and Michigan are playing? I have lots of friends from Auburn that went to UA Law but still cheered for Auburn. I was just wondering if your undergrad took the lead there.

YES
It depends when the adoption of this team took place. If the adoption of a new team was after you attended college, then that is kinda questionable and would provide an explanation.
But, if you have always loved a program & followed this program yo since you were a kid, but attended school elsewhere, then that is certainly ok.
There are various life circumstances that doesn't permint someone to attend the college they love. Especially at the age of 17 when finances & georgraphy & other factors play a major role into the decision making of which institution is the right choice.

My old boss in Myrtle Beach was such a case. She graduated from NC State, but bled, and I mean BLED carolina blue. When she first told me this, I looked at her like her boobs had just fallen off. She explained when she was looking into schools in the early 70's, she discovered that the Worthlesspack had a better accounting program that the Tarheads did. Even though she'd followed UNC her whole life, she chose State instead.
My loyalties are to CLEMSON and CLEMSON only. I don't mind certain other schools around the South when we aren't playing them, but if it's game time, you and your team can f*** off. That being said, I can understand WVUBuff's point about forces beyond one's control when choosing where to go to college.

When I was a little boy living in New York, I really didn't care. However, after moving to Texas, things changed. I was about 11 and my oldest brother went to Texas A&M. Then, my next brother went to A&M. Then, I went to A&M. It was pretty simple, really. People have asked me if I was excited that t.u. won the National Championship, and I look at them like they are crazy. Why would someone get excited over a direct rival school's glory? I don't quite understand people that go crazy over college teams that have no connection to them. When it comes to your university, that is something personal (a degree that you worked hard to obtain). If I was a t.u. grad, I would be a bit annoyed at all of these people that haven't given two cents towards my university acting like the National Championship is theirs, too.

Aubie, You had to ask that didn't you! Well, most times, except in hoops, it's a no-brainer: Illinois, because it's both my alma mater and usually the underdog. I think the ONLY time I'd root for Meetchigan over the Illini is if I were attending a game in the Big-Crowded-Stiflingly-Uncomfortable-House that Michigan Stadium has become. But as TV screens grow larger, that possibility becomes smaller.
BTW, answer me this: what is this whole "War Damn Eagle" thing with Auburn and how does it mesh with its Tiger moniker?

QUOTE
\"War Eagle!\" is Auburn's battle cry, used by fans in the same manner Alabama fans yell \"Roll Tide!\". To refer to the University of Alabama as the \"Alabama Roll Tides\" would be just as incorrect as calling an Auburn team the \"Auburn War Eagles\". The battle cry \"War Eagle\" should never have an \"s\" on the end of it.
Legend has it that football and \"War Eagle\" came to Auburn the same day, Feb. 20, 1892, when Auburn defeated Georgia 10-0 at Atlanta's Piedmont Park in the first real college football game played in the South. According to the legend, an Auburn student, fighting at the Civil War’s Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia, was left for dead in no-man's land, that stretch of earth between the two armies that belonged to neither friend nor foe. After the battle, all that was left alive there was the Auburn student and a baby eagle. With the eaglet in his pocket, the wounded soldier eventually made his way back home. He later returned to Auburn and resumed his education, nurturing the eagle back to health and maturity.
The man later joined Auburn’s faculty and when the train departed for Atlanta that fateful day, the instructor and the eagle, known to all Auburn people as \"War Eagle\" because of the circumstances which brought the man and eagle together, were on the train. As the game began, the eagle took to flight and began to circle the field. Looking skyward, the Auburn faithful began to call his name \"War Eagle.\" As the eagle continued to fly up and down the field, he was seemingly watching over his Auburn Tiger team, and supporting their efforts in his only way possible. Soon the crowd began to chant and then shout his name in unison...\"War Eagle!\"
At the end of the game, the old eagle, now almost 30 years old, collapsed and died on the playing field. Having given his all for his team and boosting Auburn to victory in the process, the events of that day soon grew into legend and the name \"War Eagle,\" as was voiced that day, has since been repeated as an inspirational battle cry whenever Auburn teams compete on the field of play.
Auburn's nickname is Tigers, not War Eagles. Never has been, never will be. People from the outside make the mistake that just because we yell "War Eagle" that means we are the War Eagles, but they do not understand the history of the cheer. Nevertheless, if someone views this as some nod toward a second mascot, then one should realize that such a concept wouldn't be unique to Auburn.
Miami has an Ibis, which has nothing to do with hurricanes.
Alabama is the Crimson Tide, which has nothing to do with elephants.
UNC – the Tarheels have a guy in a ram mascot suit.
Stanford is known as the Cardinal (as in color, not bird), with a tree as its mascot.
Tennessee has a secondary, back-up mascot in the form of a hound dog. But its not just one dog, but two. One’s real, and the other one’s in a mascot suit. This should not be confused with the guy dressed up like Davy Crockett, who is ostensibly the “Volunteer.”
Virginia – Cavaliers and Wahoos
I'm sure there are other examples of this, but no one thinks of Miami as the Ibises, Bama as the Elephants, Tennessee as the Hound Dogs, or UNC as the Rams.

As the clouds become dark and a hurricane approaches, folklore maintains that other birds look to the Ibis for leadership. The Ibis uses its instinct to detect danger. It is the last sign of wildlife to take shelter before a hurricane hits, giving warning that danger is imminent. Buff, I can understand that. However, after attending another school for four years and attending the games, parties, classes and friends, I don't understand how the loyalty to the school growing up stays in place when you "grew up" at your alma mater. That is the gist of my question. How do those experiences in college and your degree not supplant WVU?
Unless, of course, you had a miserable college experience and hate the school you graduated from. That might explain it.

As an Auburn fan, the main thing we respect is the TRADITION that is exhibited by its fans with respect to the deep love for the University....these traditions such as the yelling of War Eagle before every kickoff, or the TigerWalk before each home game, or the release of our Eagle mascot, called Tiger V, just before the beginning of each home game and watch it circle the entire stadium and land on the 50 yard line, bringing the partisian crowd to a frenzy uproar is what makes Auburn such a unique place to view college football...I would strongly encourage you to take in a game there if you ever get the chance.

Also, putting on a maroon hat and being a farmer does not make one an Aggie. One can root for whomever they want for football or basketball or anything else. As for passion, there is a huge difference between working your way through a college that you love and choosing a favorite football team.

In my case, it's very simple. BA from Florida State, MA and Ph.D. from Michigan State. Takes longer to get and MA and a Ph.D. than it does a BA, so I spent a longer period of time in East Lansing than I did in Tallahassee -- and thus, I identify more with Michigan State than I do with Florida State. When the 'noles are playing, I root for them, but not the way I root for my Spartans when they play.

just for completion/confusion:
stanford has no mascot
the guy dressed up as a tree is a member of the band, belongs to the band, and is the mascot of the band (which, logically, allows non-university affiliated particpants)
the tree on the university emblem represents el palo alto, a particular redwood which inspired the name of the city.
nickname is the cardinal.

I was born yelling War Eagle. The only logical choice for me to go to college was Auburn. My parents told me I could go to any school I wanted in the country (except Alabama, that'd have me disowned). But my heart was in Auburn. It was the only place I wanted to go.
I have other teams I will cheer for by default when Auburn isn't playing them, Georgia, GT (Because I wasraised in Georgia), Clemson (because I lived in Anderson for the first two years of my life

), Tennessee because my ex who is now one of my best friends is a big Tenn fan, all SEC schools not named Bama, and Cal-Berkeley because my sister went there.
Now onto my ex-bf. He came to Auburn even though he was raised a Tennessee fan. His parents both went to UT. He pulled for both for a while, then came the 2003 AU-Tennessee game. That day his alligence was solidified. Auburn all the way. He'd only cheer for Tennessee when he felt like it. He was an Auburn man through and through.
