[/I]Jan. 4: Hats off to the University of Miami Hurricanes, who demolished the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 37-14 in the Rose Bowl, to win college football's mythical national championship. The 'Canes finish the season as the nation's only unbeaten team, so they deserve to be called champs. But their convincing win does nothing to dispel the reality that the Bowl Championship Series is a joke. A game pitting Miami against Oregon would have clearly meant the two best teams in college football were playing. Nebraska never belonged and it showed. In their last two games, both blowout losses, the Huskers lost 99-50. The team that gave Nebraska its first loss, Colorado, was itself blown out by Oregon on New Year's Day. So, this season ends like almost all others in college football, inconclusive and ultimately unsatisfying.
I know I am so late in posting a response to the above (which was in the "Tops and Bottoms" section) so I must apologize but I just came across this site today. Miami WAS the only undefeated team in Div. 1A this year so I fail to see how their "MNC" was "inconclusive". To whomever posted the above: Did you even watch the game? Is(was)there any doubt in your mind(?)that UM wouldn't have done the same thing to ANY other team? If you think Oregon would have fared any better, please let me know so I can get you proof via VHS that MI-ami Hurricanes were "conclusive and ultimately satisfying" National Champions!
One for the thumb, Baby!!!!

I wrote it and watched the game and think Oregon would have been a worthy opponent. The Ducks actually have a QB who's familiar with the concept of the forward pass.
The BCS is flawed and the result is unsatisfying, just like last year when Miami was deprived of a chance to play Oklahoma. The Hurricanes' title remains ``mythical.''

This BCS business just goes on and on. Which leads me to believe that even if they establish a playoff system, there will continue to be a large pack of folks whining, "It's not fair that they only have 4 teams in it! There should be 8!"
And then when they change it to 8, there would be more people whining, "It should be 16!"
And then one day, we will wake up and there will be thirty-f**kin-two teams in the "playoff system." And the regular season will consist of 9 or 10 games.
Personally, I hope they set it at 8 teams and make every college football fan sign a contract to desist from any future bitching, including any quibbles over who gets dicked in the beauty contest for the 8th slot.

So what if there is bickering? There is bickering with every NCAA championship selection. I've been the recipient of many an evil email over these things. I don't like the bitching, but it's all a part of it. Trust me, when you are snubbed, there is a ton of motivation next year. It's a feeling you can't stand, especially when you lose a total three games by four points. BUT WE LOST the games...and thus did not deserve to go on.
When you are picking, the only thing that matters is that year. (just to give the other side of that coin) A lot--A LOT--of time is spent picking the field.
Football could learn a lot from other sports.

At least with other sports, like college basketball, people are arguing over whether the correct #65 team was admitted to the tournament - not whether the correct #2 team was admitted. Big difference there.

People complaining that the wrong teams are in the National Championship...
People complaining that the Oscar telecast is too long...
People complaining that Pat Buchanan is a tad too conservative.
We hear these so much every year that's its become a fact of life. I say ride the complaints and turn it into a drinking game.

This is all mental mastrubation anyway. Miami would have sacked Joey six times and beaten the Ducks by 21 anyway.
BCS, or no BCS, the Canes were better than several pro teams I've watched this year. They would have beaten last year's OK team, the year before's FSU squad, and the lackluster Tennesse team of the year before that.
I find it hard to understand that people can continue to harp on the BCS when it was so plainly obvious that Miami was the BEST team in the country (unless the moaners are Ducks fans).
And I went to the UCLA-Oregon game. Oregon looked liked crap on a stick...and only won because UCLA missed a FG at the end.
I wish Oregon had played Miami and lost by 30 so that everyone could bitch like babies that Colorado or Nebraska should have played UM.

Saying Oregon is overrated because of one game doesn't help your argument. You can cite Oregon/UCLA...I can cite Miami/Boston College.

Or I can just mention that Miami never lost, and Oregon blew a game late...at home.

Best solution I can think of: DON'T EVEN PLAY ANY FOOTBALL GAMES! Just have the "fans" vote on who is the best. Any ties will be decided by the Secretary of State from Florida or the US Supreme Court.
