Full Version: A THOUGHT FOR THE NCAA!!!!!
Outsports Discussion Board > Outsports > Football, College

Most of us college football fans can agree we hate the BCS system and want a playoff system. What i would do is have a sixteen playoff system. With the eleven confrences(both the big ones and the little ones) getting a bid for its winner and then five at large bids. The teams would be seeded 1-16. With 1 playing 16, 2 playing 15 and so on. So if this would be implemented already heres how it would look if Tennessee would win on saturday.
Acc: Maryland (6)
Sec: Tennessee (2)
Big East: Miami (1)
Big Ten: Illinois (7)
Big Tweleve: Colorado (3)
Pac Ten: Oregon (4)
MAC: Toledo (14)
WAC: Louisiana Tech (15)
MWC: Brigham Young (9)
CUSA: Lousiville (13)
SunBelt: North Texas (16)
At Large: Florida (8)
At Large: Texas (10)
At Large: Nebraska (5)
At Large: Oklahoma (11)
At Large: Washington State (12)
With These Teams Advancing to the Quaterfinals:
(1) Miami
(8) Florida
(2) Tennessee
(7) Illinois
(3) Colorado
(6) Maryland
(4) Oregon
(5) Nebraska
These teams advancing to the Semifinals:
(1) Miami
(5) Nebraska
(2) Tennessee
(3) Colorado
With These teams playing for the National Championship:
(5) Nebraska
(3) Colorado
NEBRASKA WINS IT ALL!!!
And heres how it would be if LSU won on saturday:
(1) Miami
(2) Colorado
(3) Oregon
(4) Nebraska
(5) Maryland
(6) Illinois
(7) Brigham Young
(8) Louisiana State
(9) Texas
(10) Tennessee
(11) Florida
(12) Oklahoma
(13) Louisville
(14) Toledo
(15) Louisiana Tech
(16) North Texas
With These teams advancing to the quaterfinals:
(1) Miami
(9) Texas
(2) Colorado
(10)Tennessee
(4) Nebraska
(5) Maryland
(3) Oregon
(6) Illinois
With these teams advancing to semifinals:
(1) Miami
(4) Nebraska
(10)Tennessee
(3) Oregon
With these teams advancing to the FINALS:
(4) Nebraska
(3) Oregon
NEBRASKA WINS IT ALL!!!!!

North Texas? The Sun Belt should not get an automatic bid, sorry.

My solution:
First, take every undefeated team.
Second, take the Champs of the top 6-8 conferences.
Third, round out the 16 with the next highest BCS teams who haven't been selected.

This way, every team has their own destiny in their hands at the beginning of the season (i.e., win all your games).

The biggest reason I don't follow college football that much is what I call The Smush Factor. It's where a team that plays maybe 2 or 3 'real' games a year gets major poll/BCS action for rolling a patsy 67-3. Yeah, Nebraska and KState, I'm looking at you. Oregon deseves a shot at the #2 slot, but because they didn't romp over O. State (in horrible conditions, no less) they lose those BCS points that might take them in the coveted #2 slot.

The situation with Nebraska--yeah, I have issues with the 'Huskers, so? smile.gif--is a scandal, I think. They get humiliated by Colorado and they're still in it? What the hell? Awful.

AaronA., you didn't mention how you would seed the teams in your Sweet 16. Apart from giving the 'Huskers an auto #1! smile.gif Pull little pieces of paper out of bowl? Poll rankings (iffy as some of the smaller conference champs might not be ranked)? BCS-style thing (iffy for me re: The Smush Factor)?

Cyd, I agree with the inclusion of North Texas, because, like Basketball, if you are to truly determine a National Champion, you must be able to disprove those truly non-contenders. Otherwise, you end up with the same argument as you did without a playoff system.

I know, you're probably saying..."well, he's a Husker fan, so why wouldn't he agree", but I am not even commenting on that eventual outcome.

I'm beginning to believe that 10-20% of all NCAA FB posts here are specifically geared toward:
(a) "Gawd, how I hate the BCS."
(cool.gif "Here's my idea on a national playoff system."

It must get awfully tiring living in two worlds; the real one and the hypothetical one. wink.gif
BballDC
HeyYouAUTiger--My hypothetical world is perfect, so why would I want to leave?? smile.gif

Here's my tourney, using conference champs and my own subjectivity (of course there's still controversy, as Washington State could argue it's inclusion).

I too think all conferences should get an automatic bid. Consider Miami's game against North Texas to be a bye for being #1, but none of the other "small conference" teams are cupcakes.

1 Miami
16 North Texas

8 Illinois
9 BYU

4 Colorado
13 Louisville

5 Nebraska
12 Stanford

2 Tennessee
15 La Tech

7 Maryland
10 Texas

3 Oregon
14 Toledo

6 Florida
11 Oklahoma

Good point BBall.... I had forgotten that a big WHAT IF will always be the cancellation of the Colorado-Washington State game!

I am in favor of an NCAA Championship....it's not that hard to do. I'd seed the teams the same way we do for other sports. GET A COMMITTEE!!! (Although we were told this year to regionalize because of economics, but that could change with the billions the NCAA would bring in with an NCAA championship in football)
And we'll have to wait until next week to get my seedings wink.gif

Uggggghhhh! People! The BCS is locked up with the NCAA until 2006. Two-Thousand and Six!!!!!!
There will be NO playoff system, officially, until AFTER that. The NCAA won't even start talking about changing this process until 2004, at the earliest.
Can we pleeeeassse cool it on this subject? It's beaten to death on very sports board, radio talk show, etc. And it's not gonna change any time soon.
I don't think I can bear listening to all this whining for 3 or 4 more years. But don't get me wrong...I really want a 4 or 8 team playoff system just as much as anyone. But constantly flogging this issue so hard leaves me weary.
Save all the piss and vinegar for 2004...then lobby in earnest.

Whoa there, AUTiger!!...

This is simply a discussion. The suggestions here have about as much chance of becoming reality as those suggesting a night with Eric Crouch!

If it really bothers you, why do you keep on checking in on this subject??

I think you LIKE the pain! wink.gif

Ditto CowboysHskrFan. I'm pretty sure most of us realize that our calls for a playoff cannot happen anytime soon, but it's fun to ponder. Plus, if you don't like the President, should you not talk about it until 2003? Kinda silly logic.

Anyhow AUTiger, wouldn't that be a great 6 versus 11 matchup? Who would you pick, Florida or Oklahoma??? wink.gif

btw -- are any of you hoping -- like me -- that Tennessee loses on Saturday -- just for the fun of watching the BCS confusion -- does Nebraska earn the #2 rank? -- how would the folks in Colorado and Oregon feel? -- just the sort of thing the BCS was created to avoid. GO LSU!
Zaac
I'm pulling for LSU for the exact same reason. I want to see mass confusion. I want to see a team with 2 losses win the national championship. They would forget about the BCS and disband the coalition and swiftly run into a playoff system.

There are 25 bowls. There are not 50 godd teams out there.

If there were a 16 team playoff, they could start next weekend and still finish up the first week of January. Let em keep their bowls. Just incorporate the bowls into 16. There would be sponsors fighting to get their names on one of those 16 bowls.

The contract is with ABC, as I understand it. They have the rights to the BCS championship game. So get a playoff system, and give ABC the championship game, and there goes the BCS contract.
