NCAA Places 2 Schools on Probation for Rules Violations
By Debra E. Blum
The National Collegiate Athletic Association has placed West Virginia University and the University of Southwestern Louisiana on two years' probation for violating N.C.A.A. rules governing their sports programs.
The association also reprimanded Bob Knight, the men's basketball coach at Indiana University, and fined the institution $30,000 for an outburst by the coach after a postseason game in March.
The N.C.A.A. turned down an appeal by Syracuse University, which had asked not to be forced to surrender its Division I men's lacrosse title from 1990. The association said Syracuse must vacate its championship because an ineligible athlete had played in tournament games.
