Okay folks, now that the 2003 season is under full swing it's time keep my promise and present some college football trivia questions.
This week's topic is Stadium Names.
1. You think money doesn't talk? You hate the corporate naming rights that are making a mockery of NFL and MLB stadiums? College football is no better. Every Div. IA conference has at least one school whose stadium bears the name of a big donor, quite often getting the name after said donor gave millions to the school (and usually tagged specifically for stadium improvements). Name at least one $tadium for each conference.
2. What three schools play in a "Bowl" that does not host a bowl game?
3. How many schools play in "Memorial Stadium"?
4. What is the only stadium bearing a Heisman Trophy winner's name?
5. What are the other stadiums bearing a former player's name?
6. What is the only stadium whose name has a military origin?
7. Name at least 10 stadiums bearing the name of a former coach.
8. Name at least 10 stadiums that simply bear the name of the team nickname.
Good Luck!
Jim

Here is another.
Miami plays in the Orange Bowl, but the BCS Orange Bowl game is played at Joe Robbie Stadium, not the OB.

I will tackle #08:
Tiger Stadium (Louisiana State)
Husky Stadium (Washington)
Bulldog Stadium (Fresno State)
Falcon Stadium (Air Force)
Bobcat Stadium (Southwest Texas State)
Papa John's Cardinal Stadium (Louisville)
Cardinal Stadium (Lamar)*
Cowboy Stadium (McNeese State)
Aggie Stadium (North Carolina A&T)
Seawolves Stadium (SUNY Stony Brook)
Hornet Stadium (Cal State Sacramento)
* Note: Lamar has not fielded a football team since the late 80's. But I graduated high school in Beaumont, TX, which is home of Lamar University, and since the stadium still stands, I felt an obligation to include.

Cattledog,
In my trivia questions, unless specifically stated, I am only talking Division 1-A schools. You got 5 of those, so you're halfway to getting credit for that question.

#7. All of those are correct, but there are at least 10 more, so keep going guys (and CrocJamie).

OK, here are 5 more then to #8:
Mountaineer Stadium (WVU)
Spartan Stadium (MSU)
Sun Devil Stadium (ASU)
Razorback Stadium (Ark)
Indian Stadium (Ark State)
Cajun Field (UL)
and some more coaches:
Hughes Stadium (Co State)
Byrd (MD)
Faurot (Mizzou)
and the $tadiums:
B12: Floyd Casey (Baylor)
CUSA: Bagwell Field (ECU)
SEC: Griffin (UF)
ACC: Kenan (UNC)
B10: Ryan (NU)
Pac10: Autzen (Oregon)
MtnW: Rice-Eccles (Utah)
BE: Worsham (VPI)
MAC: Yager (Miami)
SunBelt: Kibbie Dome (Idaho)
WAC: Mackaey (Nevada)
I'm also going to stand by Randall--wasn't it named after the training grounds used by the Union before and during the Civil War?
Also, the official name of the UVa Stadium is
the Carl R. Smith Center, Home of David A. Harrison II Field at Scott Stadium. True, everyone calls it Scott.

That's right -- Camp Randall was a training ground for Wisconsin soldiers entering the Civil War. To the east of the stadium is a memorial arch -- also a replica of a hut. So the stadium's name definitely has military origins.

Yes, everyone calls it Scott because it's Scott
Stadium! These questions are about stadium names. \"Field names\" is an entirely different category. For that reason, in your answers to #1, I can't count your answers for C-USA and Big East. You've given the \"field\" name, not the stadium name (which may or may not be the right answer anyway).
For your additions to #7 and #8, those are all correct except for Hughes Stadium at Colorado State. My research came up with a different name source. Their website is one of the few that didn't have that info, and I know I found it somewhere, but now I can't find the site again! If you can document your fact source, I'll accept it! kattt has already named the very obvious representative for Mountain West (LaVell Edwards Stadium at BYU).
I'm going to admit a mistake on my part in my response to your \"military origin\" answer. You said:
QUOTE
6. I can think of a couple: Army's Michie Stadium and Wisconsin's Randall Stadium
My eye caught the "Michie Stadium", not the number, so I thought you were answering the "coach names" question. Also, since you identified Wisconsin's stadium as "Randall Stadium", that further made me think you were talking about coach's names. If I had paid attention to the "6." I would have known you were answering the military origin question. However the name of the stadium in Madison is "Camp Randall" which further emphasizes the military origin. (I've never heard it referred to as just Randall Stadium.) Even when you responded with the Civil War training ground facts, you still called it just Randall. So I'll give you 1/2 credit for that. As I fully expected, DCBucky gets the full point credit.
Still need answers for the "Memorial Stadium" schools!

#3 - Illinois home turf, albeit artificial, is Memorial Stadium. The Cal Bears also play at their own Memorial Stadium.

Just to add another Memorial Stadium, the Huskers play at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.
The another bowl stadium site is the Yale Bowl which does not host a bowl game.

Ok, fair enough...
Memorials:
Clemson
Nebraska
Texas
Kansas
Illinois
Indiana
California
Aggie Memorial at New Mexco
CUSA: Dowdy-Ficken Stadium (ECU)
Big East? All I can think of is the Carrier Dome (they gave the money....)

YES! Good going, Chip. All of those are correct.
(There are three more "Memorials", one of which was mentioned by someone else in regards to another question, but they forgot the Memorial part!)
Credit to NoCalHusker for getting Nebraska (duh, been waiting to hear from you), but J T does not get credit for "Yale Bowl"... they're not Div I-A. (Good lord, you want me to research all the I-AA, DII and DIII stadiums too?)

I thought Northwestern's stadium was named "Dyke Stadium." (No pun intended, no offense intended). I'm serious about this -- the stadium at Northwestern is named for somebody with the last name of Dyke, like "Joseph Dyke Stadium," or something like that. I'm pretty sure about this.

Take it from the son of an NU grad: NU's stadium used to be called DyCHe Stadium, and there may even have been a "memorial" in there too, but somewhere along the way NU started playing its home games at Ryan.
Which reminds me of Gary Barnett ... damn he looked good at last weekend's CU-CSU game!

LOL gmginsfo!! I knew I was right about that because I always used to flinch when I was an awkward adolescent watching football games on Saturday afternoon and the sportscaster would blurt out, "Live from Dyke Stadium in Evanston, Illinos -- the Wildcats take on the Buckeyes!!"

To be specific, Northwestern plays at Ryan FIELD. The renovations (financed by the Ryan family) took place between the 96 and 97 seasons, at which time the stadium was renamed in their honor.
If you want a taste of how controversial stadium name changes can be, check out this website.
The Stadium Read all the way to the end for the story about the stadium-related "curse".

There are still a few more Memorial Stadiums unidentified out there, as well as one "player" named stadium. (Here's a hint: it was the host of one of ESPN's games over the extended Labor Day Weekend).
