The new AP poll is out and it (along with most preseason polls) confirms the usual suspects as overrated:
Mighigan
LSU
Oklahoma
Miami
Florida St
Virginia Tech
Did anyone have a look at the SI preseason poll? There's is usually the most hysterical when compared to the final results.
IMHO,

yeah....since the Hurricanes play the Tarheels in Miami this year. (please don't beat us by more than 50, thanks)
Come on, lets be honest....Florida? #11? Too early to tell if the new coach is going to do that well. Its probably better to have lower expectations and then impress to set the standard so high right off the bat.

And let's not forget Va. Tech. Once again, the love affair with the Chokies just baffles me. This team has an untested QB who may or may not stay out of trouble with drugs and little girls. Yet I've seen them ranked as high as No. 4.

Btw, how exactly do you come to the dubious conclusion that Miami is overrated. The past 5 years, the Canes have had the following final rankings:
2000--#2
2001--#1
2002--#2 (after being ripped off in the Fiasco Bowl)
2003--#5
2004--#11 (many programs would love to have this "off" year)
How do you see the Canes as overrated? Florida--definitely! Miami--no way.

4 BCS bowl games (including the championship games)
3 Big 12 championships in the last 5 years.
A Heisman trophy winner in 2003 and 2 runner-ups last year.
2003 and 2004 undefeated regular seasons
Do I need to go on? You need to re-evaluate that statement.

This year we ranked you correctly. Although you have beaten Texas, you have failed to show up for any of your bowl games...i.e. Big XII Conference Championship against KState. You also did not show up at the Sugar Bowl and you sure as hell did not show up at the Orange Bowl.
After much discussion with the AP/Coaches we decided to rank you accordingly...below TEXAS! Sorry OU but you really do SUCK!

Being that the Ducks are down at #27 or something, I feel that I can fire some shots at the big boys. No facts, no figures. Just pot shots.
Texassss. Just because they are Texassssss. See Tennessee.
Tennessee - Another just because. They are always up there, but always seems to find a way to lose at least one big game. See Texas.
Va Tech - No reason. I just don't think they are that good.
Meeeechigan - Only because Ohio State wasn't up there.
U$C - Just because I dislike them with a passion. I hope and pray that the Ducks kick their smug a$$es in Eugene.
As much as I love my Gator Jamie, I don't agree with ranking Florida at #10/#11.
and finally, Boise State. Boise Freakin' State with that God-awful blue turf. If they beat #13 Georgia they can stay. Otherwise their schedule includes Portland St, San Jose St, Utah St, Nevada, New Mexico St and Idaho.
Let's get the season started already!!!!

Hey MDB, Speaking of WAY overrated, what about Oregon State? I've seen them as high as 28 on some polls. Do they even have a team this year? They'll be lucky to beat UW.
Anyway, the ratings are kind of like the Academy Awards. They deal more with the perception of what's good rather than reality.

Aug 24 2005, 10:05 AM
Wilderblue, I haven't heard anything about the Beavers this year. With Derek Anderson gone, the Beaves will go with junior Matt Moore. I was surprised to see them ranked as high as 28.
I also think ASU is slightly over rated.
What's surprising to me is the state of the Huskies. Over the weekend I saw a tv ad promoting the UW/Air Force game at Seahawks stadium. I don't think I've ever seen a tv commercial for the Huskies asking fans to buy tickets. It was usually a given that the games sold out. I read somewhere that they have sold less than 20,000 tickets for the game. Their season ticket holders which used to be around 64,000 is now down to 45,000 which is unheard of. Willingham has closed practice to the press so it's been vurtually silent on Husky news. I think Isaiah Stanback has the inside edge on the starting QB job, but he did not look impressive last year. If it's not Stanback, then it would be former Duck and "I'm going to quit the team if I'm not the back-up" Johnny DuRocher.

For the next 50 years, there will be Auburn fans who will HATE Oklahoma. No, not because you wear Bama colors. But because your fan base blasted Auburn's for daring to question OU's invitation to the Orange Bowl.
Custer lasted longer than your Swiss Cheese defense.
France emerged from WWII with greater respect.
As a side note, I would take delight in seeing OU win the South again, then fold up shop in the Big 12 title game to a 8-3 or 7-4 Big 12 North representative. There are, surprisingly, a few peeps that still need convincing that OU has patented the choke. One more choke and OU will be tagged as the B-12 version of the Buffalo Bills.
On the other hand, as much as I have no respect for Mack the Hack, I would also enjoy seeing the man finally beat OU. And pulling for Tejas is something I have never been accused of.

Let me explain if for you in simple terms.
Ou v. USC in the Orange Bowl. Only 2 teams can play in one game. Hence, your non-worthiness. You didn't have enough BCS points to make the Orange Bowl which resulted in your Sugar Bowl berth or wherever you ended up.
I know being number 3 in the BCS that year was probably as close to a National Championship game as AU will get, but at some point you are going to have to let it go.
By "you" I mean your team. I guess your lack of understanding explains why AU was on academic probation.

Hence is spelled with an "e", not "i".
Birth, although a word, is not the same as "berth", which is the word you were looking for.
And "unworthy" is your opinion, and you base it on BCS computers and algorithms, as if raw numbers trump the reality we live in.
But I guess your belief in the BCS is apropos; for 2 straight years OU benefited at the whim of a system which the other 117 programs believe to be broken.
OU didn't deserve to be in the Sugar Bowl vs. LSU; USC was #1 and should have attended. But considering that as proof of the BCS fallibility runs contrary to your personal views, so its best that you ignore it.

Thanks for pointing out my mistakes. I have corrected them.
As far as the BCS is concerned, there is nothing that anyone is doing about it and it is the system we have. The system shows that Ou deserved to be in both the Sugar and the Orange. I’m sorry that is something you simply can’t understand.

If you look, we rank about 24 places ahead of OU on the 2006 U.S. New and World Report's National University Rankings. The probation was for the trustee micromanagement, but had nothing to do with "academics".
Herr Tiggee
Aug 26 2005, 12:19 PM
OU, I fully understand how the system "works", which is a charitable word for what it does. I also understand that the speed limit may be 55, but that does not make it so. People drive however they please, with great impunity.
Just because something "is" does not prove that it is valid. For instance; Philly Fan exists, yet there are many who believe he should not.
If the BCS was infallible, no one would ever question the matchup it creates.
Nebraska played Miami in the Rose, when many thought Oregon should have been there. Nebraska got waxxed, proving that the BCS created a poor matchup that shafted the Ducks.
Miami fans had a beef of their own some years ago when FSU played VT for all the marbles.
And then we had 2003 and 2004.

From there web site:
In brief, how does U.S. News rank colleges?
To rank colleges, U.S. News first places each school into categories based on mission (research university or liberal arts college) and, for universities offering a range of master's programs and colleges focusing on undergraduate education without a particular emphasis on the liberal arts, by location (North, South, Midwest, and West). Universities where there is a focus on research and that offer several doctoral programs are ranked separately from liberal arts colleges, and master's universities and comprehensive colleges are compared against other schools in the same group and region. Second, we gather data from and about each school in 15 areas related to academic excellence. Each indicator is assigned a weight (expressed as a percentage)
based on our judgments about which measures of quality matter most. Third, the colleges are ranked based on their composite weighted score. We publish the numeric rank of roughly the top half of schools in each of the 10 categories; the remainder are placed into the third and fourth tiers, listed alphabetically, based on their overall score in their category
Do I really need to go on about this? I'm sure AU is a fine school (academic probation aside).
From your school's newspaper:
click me I found this part interesting:
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools placed Auburn on probation last year, citing in part a finding of micromanagement by trustees. A recent report by SACS said it wasn't satisfied with Auburn's effort to get off probation and that the school would have to do more to prove that some trustees don't improperly control or influence other board members.
Congrats on getting off probation.

The BCS doesn't pick the 2 best teams playing at the end of the year, so sorry Oregon. It looks at the teams over the whole year.
The bottom line is until we have a playoff system the BCS is all we have and Ou played by the rules it was dealt with no apology.

LOL Sooner, Decatur, AL is about 4 hours from Auburn. It is 25 miles West of Huntsville and is heavily Bamerized.
If that were from THE PLAINSMAN, the wordage would have been much stronger against the trustees. Especially considering that during madatory proration due to budget shortfalls, many programs were consolidated or eliminated and the Journalism school was one of the biggest losers. Thus, they (the press) all hate Lowder and will take any chance possible to discredit him; even at the risk of damaging Auburn in the process.
