Full Version: Three teams have to pay luxury tax
Outsports Discussion Board > Outsports > Baseball
Joe in Philly
The Yankees, the only team that had to pay it last year, owe over $25 million. Boston owes $3.1 million and Anaheim has to pay $927,000.

Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, etc. cry out: Show us the money!

If you add the $25 million luxury tax to their $184 million payroll, the 2004 Yankees cost $209 million. eek!

They won 101 games in the regular season... so that's $2 million per win. rolleyes.gif

Gluttony, thy name is Steinbrenner.

Canmark, do your salary figures factor in Johnson? Also there is the inevitable acquisition of Carlos Beltran which will cost a pretty penny. Just so desperately pathetic. Any other team that made the monmental mistakes the Yanks have over the past couple of years (destroying the farm system, Kevin Brown, Jason Giambi to name a few) should, no make that WOULD, be in complete ruin. But becasue George has more money he can just go buy a replacement.

If they sign Beltran... and with Johnson's re-worked contract:

Should the Yankees' payroll reach $225 million, they can expect to pay about $232,000 per inning in 2005

I thought I read that the Yankees were rethinking going after Carlos Beltran and/or that he had pretty much decided to remain with the Astros & was flirting with the Yankees (who wouldn't flirt with Carl Pavano?) only to drive up his Houston salary. If the Yankees don't get Beltran, there must be someone else on whom Steinbrenner wants to spend a pretty penny.
