Who's all going to the Orange Bowl? A group of 6 fun guys (30s - early 40s) will be there, looking to meet for a drink and tailgate before the big game. We'll be staying in Lauderdale, but heading to Miami a few times. Will be there Friday 12/30 - Wednesday 1/4.
PennState4Ever
im4psu and I are flying down early (6:15AM!) on New Years morning and staying in Miami through the 5th.

For the glory!
KeyWest Guy
I'll be there along with 5 other guys including fellow Outsporter Bballrob. We're staying in Lauderdale as well from the 1st through the 4th.

that's so nice they're letting you into the Orange Bowl KWG

hehe

love ya baby!
KeyWest Guy
Yeah, I'm leaving my batteries and my empty whiskey bottles at home so they'll let me in. Think they'll be doing a patdown for those items at the Sugar Bowl? tongue.gif
bballrob
Sounds like we should do an Outsports tailgate or something during the week. Any ideas on where and when? And are you guys staying near the beach, PennSt84? And I do want to meet PennSt4ever and im4psu, it is nice to place a face with the smack! biggrin.gif

Seriously, let's get together and have some drinks. We'll even let Rob come too. He's not really bad once you get over his size. eek! wink

Oh, I didn't know we were going to meet at one of those clothing optional places.

Or did you mean my height?

nah, they have to let the Georgia fans in
Munson Man
Hmmmmmm......can a Notre Dame alum in Fort Lauderdale crash your drinks soiree?
buccoman
Man, I need you guys on this other board where I post sports stuff. They are all USC/Texas Rose Bowl snobs. I really need a little PA love....
PennState84
What do folks think of this idea for meeting for drinks? -

There is a Penn State pep rally on January 2 @ 2 PM at the Miami Beach Convention Center on South Beach. We could meet at the Palace Bar (12th and Ocean Dr.) after that, around 3 - 3:30.

We can plan a tailgate then too. We have 2 parking passes.
bballrob
South Beach is a bit far, especially since the stadium appears to be closer to Ft. Lauderdale than to South Beach. Are some of you Penn St guys staying in FLL? Sure would be easier to get together there, it wouldn't have to be the day of the game. Or we could just tailgate before the game, maybe 4 to 5 or so, if the game starts at 8.

And Munson Man, I'd love to get together with you even if you don't make it to the Orange Bowl tailgate, great to meet another Outsporter. But expect some smack about the team that doesn't deserve to be in the BCS bowls. No not West Virginia, the other team.... biggrin.gif
PennState84
I was suggesting South Beach after the pep rally, which is the day BEFORE the Orange Bowl game.

Yes, my group is staying in Lauderdale. We could meet at another time on the 2nd (Monday) up there, maybe Georgie's Alibi in Wilton Manors.

We'll probably be heading to the stadium early afternoon to get a good parking spot.
im4psu
Pennstate4ever and I are also planning on attending the pep rally on the 2nd...then maybe trying to hit the Beach Bash in Hollywood depending on the time. We also plan on getting to the stadium early for some tailgating before the game. Wednesday night we plan on watching the Rose Bowl in South Beach...most likely at the Clevelander. We are staying in Miami, on Biscayne Bay.
KeyWest Guy
Georgie's on Monday would be a good idea. They've got the bar with the sports TV's so we could watch whatever game is going on. I know Bballrob will want to watch his Chokies play.

Btw, as a side note, F$U accused of rape and dismissed from team.

OK...what time at Georgie's...8?

We'll still probably head to SOBE that afternoon.

Thanks for the post on the FSU player suspension.
KeyWest Guy
Georgie's at 8 sounds good to me. The Fiesta Bowl will be winding down by then so I can be laughing at either O$U or ND--win/win in my opinion.
bballrob
But will Munson Man come out to play at that time? Either he will be in a very good mood and want to talk smack (and I wouldn't blame him) or he will be so down that even meeting a Swampbird, a Hokie and several Nitanies wouldn't liven him up. smile.gif

Otherwise sounds good to me.
Munson Man
Hmmmmm.......well, George's is essentially right down the road from me, and my gym is next door. I'll probably work out, watch ND beat OSU at George's tongue.gif and wait for the riffraff to show up. wink

Not sure if you guys have been there before, but George's is pretty big - will you be in a particular area? Or perhaps you'll be wearing clothing from your - ahem - institutions of higher learning?

Enjoy the game boys! I'm looking forward to this one as much as the title game I think!

Probably in the back area near the pool table where the TV's are. If you flirt with the bartender properly, he'll put the game on for ya. wink
PennState84
Been to Georgie's many times. Area near the pool tables is good. 8 PM. Wear hat/t-shirt from your school.

Don't worry, I think that KWG does not own any clothing that isn't orange and green. Since it might be under 70 degrees he will probably be wearing his 'Canes heavy coat. He even wore it in my house when he visited.
KeyWest Guy
Bballrob will also be wearing orange and green. It's one of my dictates that he is required to follow.

GO CANES! (How the hell does LSU get an "x" in GO??? tongue.gif )

WOW! Great Orange Bowl game. That Penn State kicker is just precious. rolleyes.gif
scottPA
WOW, what a game, had to be one of the hardest hitting games I have seen in a long time, tremendous highs and lows throughout, and 2 really great defensive teams beating each other up on the field. I did get the impression that FSU tends to play a little dirty at times, but then again I'm biased.

Hope you guys all had a great time at the tailgate parties, wish I could have been there.

I too agree with the previous post PSU has 1 fine looking kicker, who obviously has trouble staying "Straight"

"Congrats" to JoePa on his 21st career bowl win.....

All I was able to watch were the final quarter and three overtimes, (missed field goals are always painful for me to watch) and Joe Pterno deserves extra kudos for his reaction to the second missed field goal attempt by Kevin Kelly. Instead of yelling or avoiding him, Paterno patted his helmet and mouthed "It's OK."

I'm sure Paterno and Bowden went through extra Depends during the five-hour game. wink

I'm suing Penn State and FSU for making me tired today. Man, that was a ballgame. I feel bad for cismasia (sp?).

LOL. Joe is often a crankly old coot nowadays but that was a classy act and made me remember his greatness....Another classy moment was Bowden appearing on the the air with Paterno at the game's end...~

Back from the Orange Bowl and Ft. Lauderdale, what a great trip! Of course the game was the highlight of the trip, not the visit to Haulover Beach. :-)

Getting to the stadium was a nightmare. Add the normal rush hour traffic for a weekday to 70K+ going to the game, and mix in terrible traffic planning for the parking lots, and a trip that should have taken less than 45 minutes from FLL to the stadium took almost 2 hours. So much for tailgating, we didn't have time (except for the liquids consumed on the trip there, of course).

Pro Player Stadium itself was great, I sat in the upper deck at the goal line and it was a great seat. The food was surprisingly good, and they actually served good beer, like Heineken and Corona, as well as that bottled water they call Bud and Miller. I ended up sampling a bit too much of the good stuff.

The football game itself was extremely exciting. For the first half I sat in the smaller, but equally rabid, section of Florida State fans, and let me tell you the tomahawk chop gets really old really fast. I wore my Virginia Tech sweatshirt and got some polite but good-natured ribbing. Most agreed that VT really blew it in the title game. And everyone agreed that they like VT, and BC, and the Virginia fans wearing coats and ties (the guys) and skirts (mostly the girls) to the games were very funny, but everyone was of like mind, they HATED Miami. Luckily I had a ticket by myself, the original Swampbird had tickets with his friends in a Penn St. section (which of course seemed like most of the stadium). I joined them at halftime and watched the second half in that section because there were plenty of seats to be had.

I didn't think the game was extremely well-played. The defenses ruled, and both sides made mistakes that could have lost the game, except that the other team would one-up and make another mistake. The kicking games of course got to be almost funny, who could choke more. But it sure made the game exciting.

Note to whoever broadcasts the games next year, start them at 7! The game lasting until 1 am was terrible. And of course last night the game wasn't over until after midnight. We did not get back to the hotel until 2:30.

The entertainment was underwhelming, which disappointed me. I remember as a child looking forward to the Orange Bowl game for the sports AND for the halftime show (even then the sports-gayness connection intersected). The pregame was mediocre, and halftime was just not that good. The highlight to me was Ruben singing the National Anthem, it was beautiful. He did not try to "gild the lily" by adding anything, he sang a capella, and the flyover at the end caused chills.

All in all it was a great game to attend. I did lubricate the experience a bit, which made it all the better, until Wednesday morning.

The night before we met PennSt4ever and im4psu at George's and had a great time. They were great guys, it was wonderful to be able to connect with them and spend time with more Outsports people. And it makes me feel so young hanging with the young guys! To be able to talk college football, politics, and the extreme hotness of the Penn State college boys hanging out on the beach is really cool. Of course they were excited about the game, and after suffering for more than 5 hours they had a great outcome. They came all the way up from Miami to meet us, clearly they are class acts.

So great trip, I hope to go again next year!
KeyWest Guy
It was truly an entertaining football game.

Btw, don't trust Rob's analysis of the game--he was LOADED by kickoff. wink Amateurs should never drink with a bunch of Key West pros.
Aubie In Bham
Maybe Rob was trying to drink someone pretty! tongue.gif

You know I'm playing KWG.

That is not true, if you are referring to the kickoff at the beginning of the game, that is....

And I think he means "Key West 'ho's".

Pennstate4ever and I have also returned from sunny South Florida...back to cold, grey Washington DC. What a game!!! And what a great time in Miami. The place was swarming with Penn Staters. We still do not have our voices back from the game. We got to the stadium around 3pm to avoid the traffic issues and soak in the atmosphere...attended a few tailgates, met up with friends from home and had an all around fantastic time! After the game, while waiting for traffic to clear out some, we even hung out with the FSU fans we were parked next too.

Meeting up with Keywestguy and Bballrob the night before the game in Lauderdale was an added great experience to the whole bowl trip! If you ever have the chance ot meet up with those you talk too here, do so! And I'm glad we could make Bballrob feel young for one night...LOL!

Well...only 8 months until college football season starts again!!!

We are...
