Junior makes a request about the broadcast crew:
QUOTE
YOU'D THINK WITH ALL the hype surrounding Ken Griffey Jr., leading up to his 500th career home run, the Reds superstar centerfielder would have more important things to worry about.
Think again.
According to the Cincinnati Post, Griffey put in a call to Reds chief operating officer John Allen last week, requesting that either Marty Brennaman or Joe Nuxhall, both longtime Reds radio announcers, make the call for his historic blast, rather than first-year Reds announcer Steve Stewart.
\"It's no disrespect against Steve, I just felt that when it's done, it should be [called by] someone who'd been there,\" Griffey said.
Brennaman had mixed feelings on the request.
\"John and I talked this afternoon, and John said it was Junior's request,\" Brennaman said. \"I said, 'Look, you're my boss. If you say I've got to do it, then I've got to do it.' I said I'm not comfortable doing it, because I don't want people to get the wrong impression. But it's very flattering that he wants us to do it, and thank God Steve understands.\"
He's one of the few.
Usually the play-by-play guys take scheduled innings and whatever happens, happens. If Griffey wants his way and doesn't want Steve Stewart calling his home run, maybe he should just strike out during Stewart's innings. After all, the Reds already proved on Monday (as I mentioned over in the Phillies thread) that they care less about winning than about money, so why not?
Meanwhile, the attendance was listed as 36,501. Capacity for their park is 42,059. I guess milestones aren't so important in Cincinnati.
