Just got around to reading my current Sports Illustrated and was pleasantly greeted by the most amazing cover shot of Ken Griffey Jr...
Always thought he was hot when he was with the Mariners and in his early years, but ya'll gotta check out the butt and thighs shot that they plastered on this week's cover!!! And of course that killa smile is also there!!!!..
Here's another jock that is aging to PERFECTION!...now if he can just stay healthy, maybe this will be a turnaround year for him...

Maybe this should be in "Hot Jock Talk," but I agree that Griffey's resurgence is exciting. I have to admit that while I think he's handsome, he doesn't really excite me sexually because...he looks just like my younger brother. I even asked my mother if we could possibly be related to him, because the resemblance facially is uncanny (and a bit eerie). Who knows. Anyways, I'm really glad that he's healthy and hitting home runs again. I hope he hits 50 or more this year--just so long as the Cardinals win that division OR the Wild Card.

Well he'll certainly look better than this 1998 Time Magazine depiction. Though he and Mark Mcgwire make a cute couple biggrin.gif

But not to worry, he will get better with age if you believe this make-up for an ad that redoes him to be 60 years old. We should all age so well. wink

Junior makes a request about the broadcast crew:

QUOTE
YOU'D THINK WITH ALL the hype surrounding Ken Griffey Jr., leading up to his 500th career home run, the Reds superstar centerfielder would have more important things to worry about.

Think again.

According to the Cincinnati Post, Griffey put in a call to Reds chief operating officer John Allen last week, requesting that either Marty Brennaman or Joe Nuxhall, both longtime Reds radio announcers, make the call for his historic blast, rather than first-year Reds announcer Steve Stewart.

\"It's no disrespect against Steve, I just felt that when it's done, it should be [called by] someone who'd been there,\" Griffey said.

Brennaman had mixed feelings on the request.

\"John and I talked this afternoon, and John said it was Junior's request,\" Brennaman said. \"I said, 'Look, you're my boss. If you say I've got to do it, then I've got to do it.' I said I'm not comfortable doing it, because I don't want people to get the wrong impression. But it's very flattering that he wants us to do it, and thank God Steve understands.\"

He's one of the few.
Usually the play-by-play guys take scheduled innings and whatever happens, happens. If Griffey wants his way and doesn't want Steve Stewart calling his home run, maybe he should just strike out during Stewart's innings. After all, the Reds already proved on Monday (as I mentioned over in the Phillies thread) that they care less about winning than about money, so why not?

Meanwhile, the attendance was listed as 36,501. Capacity for their park is 42,059. I guess milestones aren't so important in Cincinnati.

Steve Stewart, the relatively new broadcaster, behaved in the most gracious manner, so I won't be so churlish as to mention that Stewart's been involved with more Reds' games in the past two seasons than Griffey himself. Perhaps he can further request that either Greg Maddux, Roger Clemens, Tom Glavine, or Randy Johnson be the pitcher of record when he sets his milestone. After all, wouldn't a future hall-of-fame pitcher be more appropriate to such august moment--for Ken Griffey--than a mere journeyman pitcher or a relative neophyte? wink

After tomorrow's series finale vs. Texas the Reds play the next 6 on the road. I'd love it if he didn't homer tomorrow. It would be perfect karma.

And that perfect karma was achieved. Now all he needs to do is homer before the Reds get back home...

Not wishing Griffey anything bad, but considering how injury-prone he has been since returning to Cincinnati, there's a chane Junior'll wind up on the the DL before he hits number 500.

That's not a problem since he hit no. 500 today. On the road. HA! biggrin.gif

And 19 for the season. He's tied for second in homers in the majors. I have Griffey on my fantasy league, so I'm hoping he can stay injury free for the rest of the season.

As an Astros fan, I'm glad to learn Griffey Jr. was on the cover of SI. Considering the "curse," maybe that means a 10-game losing streak is on the horizon for the Reds. smile.gif

I've never been a big fan of Junior but he definitely deserves credit for his reaction towards the fan who voluntarily returned the 500th home run that Griffey hit in St. Louis on June 20th....according to ESPN.com:

Griffey showered Mark Crummley of Mount Carmel, Ill., with gifts after he returned the historic ball June 20, including an autographed game-used jersey and other Reds-related memorabilia. On Monday, Griffey gave Crummley four expenses-paid trips to Houston for the All-Star Game.

After the June 20 game, Crummley said he didn't want to "plea bargain" with Griffey for the ball. That was in marked contrast to recent milestone events in which many fans parlayed their catch into a big payoff.

"I'd do the same thing," Crummley said. "It was the right thing to do. I didn't expect anything, especially like this."

Kudos to both men for their commendable conduct, particularly Griffey for going above the beyond the norm in expressing his appreciation for the fans unselfish behavior. Let's hope this becomes an example for future milestones unlike those two idiots in San Francisco who went to court (and made a couple of attorneys wealthier) during their battle over who "owned" one of Bonds' historic home run balls.
