Okay I'm not a Cubs fan (though I wouldn't hate to see them finally break the curse that the Red and White Sox have been able to do the past couple of seasons. But already things are looking down for the Cubbies. Injury prone Kerry Wood will miss the first two weeks of the season with yet another injury.
MiamiSpartan
No big shock. The scrubs have banked on two injury-prone pitchers to anchor their staff for the past few seasons, and it has gotten them no where...
Illini_fan
Kerry Wood is injured to start a season? Shocker. rolleyes.gif
Illini_fan
*bump*

The Cubs won on opening day for the fourth year in a row. It was another blowout, tying the Cubs record for most runs scored on Opening Day (a mark they set last year). Okay, just 172 more games like that and it'll be the Cubs year. biggrin.gif

In May my partner, brother and nephew are going to see the Cubs play the Padres. We're travelling in from Iowa and from everything I remember about Wrigley Field, parking is a true nightmare. I saw that the Cubs offer a shuttle for the Saturday game, but any suggestions on where to park for the Friday afternoon game? My nephew is only 4, so looooong walks are not recommended.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Have you considered parking the car in a park/ride lot somewhere in the city and riding the train to Wrigley? The nearest station is just a block or two from Wrigley Field.

Just a thought....
canmark
I agree, take the El train, which stops right next to Wrigley. Or, if you have to park in those local lots, make sure you get an "outside" spot. You pay more, but if you get an "inside" spot, your car may be boxed in, and you have to wait until other people move their car before you can leave (this happened to me once; but it was in a lot directly across from Wrigely, so we couldn't complain about convenience).

You have my deepest sympathies. biggrin.gif

I'd recommend parking in Rockford then taking a bus/train/cab. That's probably the closest you'll get to Wrigley in a car. tongue.gif

It's broom dance time for the Cubbies, sweeping the Cards back to St. Louis. The last thing you need to give the Cubs is confidence that they can win without their arms at full health.
CrewBevo
Yeah, it was exciting to see the Cubs sweep the Cards. Opening day was so cold. I watched the Sunday night game at Crew and brought my broom out.
softballstud
I heard that CREW is buying shots for everyone if Cubbies can sweep again when they make first trip to the new St. Louis ballpark April 21-23?!
biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Also, that is the weekend of 'Night of 100 Champions'. http://www.gaygameschicago.org/benefits/champions.php
Perhaps we could see the likes of Greg Louganis, Mary Carillo, Esera Tuaolo, Dave Kopay, Leigh-Ann Naidoo, Marcellas Reynolds <not an athlete, but I LOVED him on Big Brother> or Matthew Cusick, all enjoying a beer and the Cubs @ CREW!

Hmmm....to drive to Chicago on a Sunday night or not...that would be the question.

Guys, thanks for the information on the Park & Ride feature of the CTA. We'll be using that to get to Wrigley. A bonus is one of the Park & Ride stops is very near our hotel, so that makes life a lot easier. Plus my nephew loves to ride trains! :-)

MIB...that Onion article is TOO FUNNY!!!

Can you believe that 40-year old fart, Greg Maddux?! He's off to a GREAT start.

More bad news for the cubs...
Derrick Lee broke two bones in his wrist against the Dodgers the other night and will miss 8-10 weeks....Not a cub fan, but I don't wish that on anyone....D Lee is a class act...

Oh man, that's awful. I was watching that game and hoped that the injury wouldn't be serious. The Cubs sure didn't need this.

Here's the story of Lee's injury.

I'm too lazy to read through to the end of the posts, but the Red Line stop to reach Wrigley is ADDISON. The park is visible once you exit the station, and it's two blocks west. You can't miss it.

Very nice come-from-behind victory last night. It was also nice to see that sexy Joe Girardi back at Wrigley field. I should have tried to hit up his brother Jerry for tickets to the game, he owes me <wink wink>. biggrin.gif

I've always been a HUGE fan of the city of Chicago for so many reasons and I used to prefer the White Sox over the Cubs until a few years back when I finally had the chance to visit Wrigley Field. I don't what it was exactly, but taking the "L" to Wrigley, taking the tour, walking around town (i.e. Wrigleyville) was simply amazing. It was such an incredible experience enjoying the "neighborhood ballpark" feeling. I'm sure it would be just as incredible if I were to ever visit Boston but I haven't had the pleasure. Anyway, I started watching more and more Cubs games and no matter how badly they've done, I still feel the same as I did that first visit there. I believe their time will come soon but I don't feel this is their year.

Whenever work takes me to Chicago during baseball season, I make mecca to Wrigley; I think its allure is that it's a little jewelbox of a stadium that perfectly fits its surroundings.

I'll take the White Sox over the Cubs and their fans any day.

I can remember 1) whenever I was trying to get home or down to the Loop on the Red Line and I had to wedge myself in between all those smug yuppie suburban Cubs fans who would make stupid comments about the city of Chicago as if it were Calcutta, hog up all the seats, and just show no respect to the people who rode the El every day.

2) when I lived in Lakeview (Boystown) and the drunken Cubs fans would vomit or piss in the nearest available space behind the cars on my street, yelling and screaming and just acting like total idiots.

More power to the White Sox, and I hope they go back to the World Series this year...to face the Saint Louis Cardinals!
Illini_fan
Uh, fantomas, have you ever been near White Sox fans after a game? I've only seen a small sample, but that second part wasn't exactly Cub exclusive.
BrianK
Fantomas, I am sure that it is easy to find a few morons amongst a crowd of 40,000 people, especially when you look down on that crowd from the pedestal that you seem to place yourself on.
I have gone to many ball games in many different stadiums and you will find that kind of behavior from a small percentage of the crowd after a 2 - 3 hour game no matter what city (or part of the city) you are in.
otownguy63
I have to agree with BrianK. You'll find guys like that in EVERY crowd and in EVERY sporting event. For example, I used to live up in Delaware and I could say the same about Eagles football fans. They could be one rowdy, nasty bunch but again, it doesn't reflect the entire crowd. As for me, I wouldn't mind seeing the White Sox repeat but I can't help but root for the Cubs. I just need to get out there to see a game.

Nope, no pedestal; I think you're projecting. And I said nothing about "morons," just yuppies who rode into the city on the Red Line, and badly behaving drunks who acted like Lakeview was a giant toilet. I'm sure fans of other teams behave outrageously, though I haven't seen Yankees, Mets, White Sox, Dodgers, Red Sox, or Braves fans doing so to the neighborhood around them, especially not when their teams were consistent losers, but hey, I guess those fans are out there. As I said, I'll take the White Sox over the Cubs any day. So when are they going to break their curse by vacating Wrigley and moving to Charlotte or Portland, either of which would love to have a new team?
Illini_fan
You think they're that stupid. You'll never find as much devotion to a team in Portland as you find on the north side of Chicago.
fantomas
Yeah, I know. They can lose every game and still draw fans from as far as the Wisconsin and Iowa borders.
Anthony D. Langford
When the Cubs played the Nats here in DC last year, I was shocked at how many Cubs fans there were in the audience (I would gather there were more Cubs supporters than Nats fans, in fact), including my date for the evening (I'm a longtime Cubs fan myself, but I rooted for the Nats to support my hometown team). And when the Nats play the Yankees later this season, I suspect their fans will far, far outweigh fans of the local team. I always remember that night because there was a 2 1/2 hour rain delay and we spent a long time talking and getting to know one another, more than you would any other first date.

There were a lot of Cub fans here in SD for the games of a week ago. Tough call for me, but I solved it by rooting for the offense, just like when watching football games I've no stake in. In the game I attended, that proved to be the Padres, who are surging right now as much as the Cubs are slumping currently. Come October, maybe I'll have less of a Hobson's choice! wink

When in Chicago, though, I'll keep going to Wrigley, and will not break my record for never having watched a game at Comiskey, or whatever it's now called. Nothing personal against South Siders - I've eaten at every White Castle in every neighborhood of Cook County at every hour of the day - but I just like the feel of Wrigley, just like I liked the feel of the old Tiger Stadium in Detroit. And if the Sox go to the Series again this year, I'll root for them - unless, of course, they're playing the Cubs!
MiamiSpartan
Will Dusty be fired???
Rumours are out there. Frankly, I've never thought he was that good a manager, even when he was with the Giants...
He blew the 03 Series vs the Marlins...

Yes, the Cubs are going through a tough time thus far, mostly due to injuries suffered by the team. Maybe they can pick up a game or two this week when they play the Nats (though the Nats swept them last season when they played the Cubs at Wrigley and won 2 of 3 when they played here in DC -- but that was last year). The Cubs have a tough weekend series cause then they play the White Sox. So if they're going to break this losing streak they better do it this week!

DUSTY HAS GOT TO GO!!!!
fantomas
Is it Dusty's fault, or his anemic-batting, injury prone team that's one again at fault? And does anyone believe that if they were healthy they wouldn't find a way to sabotage the man and their fans? Goats, Bartman, take your pick....
gmginsfo
Sabotage? Get real! I hardly think the Cubs' problems are Dusty's fault, or that "he has to go," but there's no hint of any ursine conspiracy theories. All they've done is traded places, for now hopefully, with the Padres, who regained their surge last night with an incredible 10-run opening at-bat against AZ last night in Phoenix.
Anthony D. Langford
As glad as I am to see the Cubs winning the last two days (and they'll no doubt win today), it's painful to watch them beat up on the Nats. But, I guess that's what happens when your two favorite teams play one another. Here's hoping the Nats at least try to give the Cubs some real competition.

Anthony
MIB
Dusty is only a part of the problem, but his termination would be a good thing for the Cubs.

I wouldn't exactly call them "devoted." If you turn the lights on at Wrigley on a Friday night in January, within an hour the place would be packed and the idiots who were there would never know a baseball game wasn't taking place.
T & G
MIB...can you please clarify your statement?

Maybe we should ask him to insert himself into the line up so he can run the bases, hit the cut-off man and execute the fundamental plays.

Do you feel his play calling is incorrect? It's hard to call for a hit and run when you have no base runners...which really is the hitting coach’s problem. Do you not agree with the pitch selection or the pitchers? That would be a GM problem or Larry Rothschild’s (wow Detroit is thankful he stayed in Chicago).

Just wondering how any of this could be his issue?

The Cubs are the Cubs...is anyone surprised? I would hope not.

A team with no heart will be exactly that with or without Dusty...he just shouldn't be the scapegoat here.
T & G
Are you claiming that the fans attending games on the southside are any better? I will take drunken frat people any day compared to the white trash and deliquents I have experienced south of Madision any day!!

The Sox turn the lights on during April, May, June, July, August, September and even last year in October and still no one showed up.

No need to reply to my request for clarification. Your prior post answers it all for me. You actualy know nothing about the game.
Anthony D. Langford
Okay, I wanted the Nats to win this game, but the Cubs actually had a shot at overcoming the 5-3 deficit in the 9th. They had men at 1rst and 3rd and the Nats closer was having trouble finding the strike zone. So the Cubs call for the batter to try and bunt his way on? I'm baffled by that decision, just baffled. Not exactly an exciting finish.

Hah, at least people show up to the games.
T & G
The decision to bunt was not called from the bench but was made by Perez. Looking at the positioning of the infielders, the run would have scored and runners would have been on 1st and 2nd. Again, it boils down to failure to execute.

Cubs 11 - Cards 4 ... even though another season is down the tubos, this is almost as good as winning the WS
