He's suffering from a couple of medical conditions that have kept him from playing very much this season (a year after signing that big contract with the Nets...nice timing). No one knows if the treatments he's getting will help him recover enough to get back on the court.

Very sad.

Whether the "timing" is fortunate might depend on the small print in the contract. I doubt that signing a contract and getting this disease is a very pleasant way to earn a living.

Since being tall is in and of itself a genetic abnormality it is not surprising that other abnormalities are associated with it.

I wish him well and hope that ways can be found to treat ailments like his.

Well, I was just making a quick snarky comment when I said "nice timing." From a purely business standpoint, it was nice timing for him because he'll still be paid lots of money (whether he gets every penny after this season may depend on if he continues to attempt to play or not) even if he's unable to earn it; it's bad timing for the 76ers because not only are they paying him but he's taking up space on the salary cap. Had these ailments shown up two years ago he'd never have been offered that deal by the Nets. Regardless, I certainly hope he can make a full recovery.

A comeback was not meant to be.

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia 76ers center Todd MacCulloch retired Wednesday, ending an attempted comeback from foot problems that sidelined him the last 1 1/2 seasons.

MacCulloch, 28, hasn't played since February 2003 because of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a genetic disorder that disrupts his balance.

MacCulloch had surgery in January on his left foot to free up a crushed nerve, leaving him hopeful of a recovery and perhaps a similar procedure on his right foot. Instead, there was no progress.
