Well, the whole amateur money sham at U of M finally has come to roost at Mr. Webber's door. After years of denying he did anything like this, Chris, his father, and his aunt were all indicted today for perjuring themselves before a grand jury. The charge could lead to a 10 year prison sentence and a $500,000 fine.
Being a Spartan and a college basketball fan, I never cared for Webber. His attitude was consistently poor and he always had questions about rules violations around him.
I wonder how much easier it would be to admit to taking over $200k as an amateur athlete and taking your lumps in the press. His fellow teammates have, and everything has passed for them already.

charliecstl: your last paragraph was exactly what I thought when I heard the story on the news today. If only Webber had stood up and admitted everything, it would have blown over (for him) by now. Of course, this won't change the way boosters deal with star college athletes. (Just pay them, already.)

when the 'fab 5' came to play us at bloomington, webber sat in the middle of the floor where iu has its logo inside a picture of the state of indiana--he rubbed his ass on the logo, laughing, yelling at his teammates to look at him--after that, i've never liked him or his coach--u of m should have been more vigilant...this is a mark on the big ten as well

What he did originally is hardly news--big time college sports are rotten to the core--but what a drag that he faces jail time for lying.
I've always kind of liked CWebb after he was pulled over by the cops on his way to practice. He refused to roll down the window because he'd been smoking pot. The cops were understandably not happy about that. Dude, they're gonna smell it anyways, roll down the window! Um, there's a reason it's called dope.
I remember the case of JaRon Rush at UCLA. After he pissed everyone off by dissing Roy Williams ("I don't like Roy's substitution pattern"), he showed up in Westwood in a $17,000 SUV. Hmmmmm.....yeah, he paid for that with the money he made working at McDonald's, yeah, that's it! No suprise when he was caught up in the Myron Piggie fiasco. *Sigh* College sports desperately needs reforms, but I sense that everyone involved (the NCAA, the university's, the pro leagues that use them as free minor leagues) likes things just the way they are.
