The team's second-round pick in last month's draft, Marcus Douthit, has been charged with taking part in a Rhode Island identity theft and embezzlement scheme that allegedly filed more than $160,000 in false slip-and-fall and car accident claims. It is claimed he received $6,500 from faking a car accident in December 2001. Douthit and the Lakers are currently in negotiation & Mitch Kupchak says he is "aware of the charge & is trying to get more information."
Ah, for the days when the Lakers were the team of Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, and Darrel Imhoff.

It appears that Douthit is in the process of cutting a deal with investigators. He will take part in a program that would clear him of criminal wrongdoing if he agrees to pay a fine, perform community service & cooperate with prosecutors in other aspects of the case.

The Los Angeles Lakers resumed their makeover Friday by trading Gary Payton and Rick Fox to the Boston Celtics for Chucky Atkins, Marcus Banks and Chris Mihm.
In the deal first reported by Fox Sports Net's Jack Haley, the Celtics also received a conditional first-round draft pick and cash in the deal and sent a second-round pick to the Western Conference champions.
