Recently I mentioned to a friend that I felt the Knicks would get off to a start similar to the Orioles years ago. Remember when they started the season 0-21? I really think the Knicks could be headed down this road; especially after they lost their first 2 home games. It's a bad sign when you lose your first 2 home games. In the NBA, home court is supposed to be a huge advantage. And now the Knicks embark on 12 of 15 on the road! Yikes!
I watched last night's game against Portland. It appeared to me that the Trailblazers were just chilling out in the first half, making the Knicks believe they could win. After all, why break a sweat when you're playing the Knicks? The Trailblazers saved their real game for the 2nd half as they eventually blew out the Knicks. The Knicks looked like small high school players in the paint trying to stop the Blazers big men. The Knicks look so uncoordinated to me. Their best players could be their rookies but the rookies are just too small and frail looking to survive against experienced NBA competition.
It's going to be a long year.
Hey Orioles, we may just match your infamous
0 for 21 start after all.

This Knicks team is painful to watch. There is no discernable star, no real go-to guy. The closest is Stephon Marbury, but when was the last time he even took a team to the playoffs? The Knicks don't have a big man that can strike fear into opponents. Jamal Crawford throws up shots way out of position. I hope Larry Brown enjoys his paycheck, since I doubt he'll enjoy the box scores he'll see for the rest of the season.
The Knicks management keeps believing that the team is one or two trades away from being a contender. But it's just not going to happen. None of the players, except maybe Marbury, is worth trading for. Everyone else is overpaid and underperforming. Instead of prolonging this disappointment, the Knicks need to come to grips with reality and let these bad contracts lapse, become a lottery team, and draft a few young stars in the coming years. It's how the team got it's last real superstar: Patrick Ewing.

A disaster?
They only played 4 games? There is a reason why the season is 82 gms long.
And let me remind you that the Chicago Bulls started last season 0-9 and wound up making the playoffs. I don't think a Larry Brown coached team will purposely stink up the joint, especially if that joint is MSG.

0-5! Lost another big halftime lead to the WArriors. Still you gotta figure Brown will turn things around. The Knicks probably won't make a Bulls-like playoff push since the East is much deeper than it's been in the past several years.

Didn't Larry Brown coach the '76ers to the playoffs after they started 0-5? It's too early to write the Knicks off and, sadly, it's even too early to start hoping they outdo the worst NBA record, just nine wins.
However, it's never too early to speculate which job will become available & how soon Larry will express his interest in it. wink

I am constantly disappointed with the Knicks. Maybe my heart is still broken from when Hakeem "the dream" killed us in the NBA finals. I just don't believe that this team will make the playoffs in its current configuration. Maybe someone knows something about the hidden potential of Eddy Curry.
Perhaps I'm judging the Knicks a little prematurely. But it's not a good sign that a team with a Hall of Fame-bound coach can't get a single win.

The big difference between this Larry Brown 0-5 start and past 0-5 starts for him is this 2005 schedule. The Knicks schedule gets even more brutal.
There's just no letting up.
Here are the next 4 disasters:
at Sacramento
at Utah
at Kobe
at Carmelo
How could the Knicks possibly not come home 0-9?
It's a pretty much definite.

While I have no doubts that the Knicks have a terrible team (so much for all of Isaiah's wheeling and dealing

), their upcoming road opponents are not exactly the class of the field, either. Collectively they are 11-14.
Sacramento, 2-4
Utah, 4-3
LA Lakers, 3-3
Denver, 2-4

The fact that these games are on the road is all I need to see to expect doom for the Knicks. It is extremely hard for bad teams to win on the road even if those opponents are just average. If these games were being played at home then I would consider their records.
Winning on the road is more difficult, I believe, in the NBA than any other major team sport. All you need to do is look at the championship serieses over the last few decades. Check out how the home team always seems to hold serve. For once I would love to see a surprise where the road team wins the first two games. Never happens in the NBA.

Well the teams they've lost to so far aren't exactly the class of the league either (with the exception of Washington) but that didn't stop the Knicks from losing to them. Take the Wiz out of the equation and the other four are a combined .500.
@ Boston 2-3
Washington 5-1
Golden State 4-3
@Portland 2-3
@Golden State again 4-3
Surely they could or should have found a way to steal one of those games. But I still expect Brown will right the ship at some point. Just probably not soon enough to get the Knicks into the top 8.

While I am happy to get the first one out of the way so early in the season, I am so ready for the Knicks' west coast trip to be done. I have been getting the scores off my cell phone (which gives me the Knicks final score) in the middle of the night. I didn't realize that Utah's 62 points was the lowest scoring effort by any team against the Knicks in the shot-clock era. Of course, I do realize that the Jazz were a bit short-handed. But I love the way the Knicks have stepped it up and won two straight nights where they rarely win (Sacramento and Salt Lake City). Nice 20 point effort off the bench by Jamal Crawford, by the way.

Continuing on their west coast roadtrip, the Knicks played well in the first half of last night's game against the Lakers. However, the Lakers went on a big run at the beginning of the third quarter and Kobe Bryant did his thing. While looking great on rebounds and maintaining possession of the ball, the Knicks shooting, both from the field and from the free throw line, just went dismal. They were never able to quite recover from that early third period. Even though the final score was 97-92, it seemed that that closer than it seemed final score was a mixture of lackadaisical play from the Lakers in the final minutes combined with some pep from the younger Knicks. I will say that I like the fact that Knicks played hard all the way to the end of the game--last year's team wouldn't have done that. Channing Frye looked particularly well with a team-high 21 points, and the very cute David Lee actually had a double-double. The Knicks still have one more game left on this road trip at Denver before actually being treated to a home game

for a change, which happens to be against the Trailblazers (before going right back on the road to face Charlotte). With the Knicks and Rangers on very early and long road trips this season, November has been very quiet at the Garden.

Any bets on whether Stephon Marbury will be in a Knicks uniform after the all star break?
After the way the Knicks shut down the Jazz a few nights ago, I thought that Larry Brown was going to turn the team into a clone of the Detroit team he coached--a team with limited offensive ability that compensated with great defensive effort. But it didn't look that way with the Lakers.
If Larry Brown can turn this ship around, I think it will be one of his greatest coaching achievements.

The Trail Blazers are hardly a "treat". They are at .500 (not champion, but far better than expected for a team some expected to be one of the worst in the league), in first place (!) and 2 of their 3 losses went down to the final possession.
Besides, you know Bassy Telfair wants to take it to his cousin Marbury.

I think you may have misintepreted what I meant. I actually meant that the Knicks were being "treated" to a
home game because they have been on the road for so long. I should have used the "eye-rolling" emoticon next to the "home game" to clarify. I will edit that after I am done with this post. I wasn't specifically referring to play of the Trailblazers. However, I can definitely see how one could read it the other way.

Channing Frye could turn out to be the Knicks' most successful rookie since Charlie Ward or even, Mark Jackson. He's averaging 13.2 points/night, and has scored 20+ points in the last three games. In fact, Frye is third in scoring for the Knicks, only behind Stephon Marbury and Jamal Crawford. It's nice to see a Knicks' rookie succeeding for a change.

Despite giving stand-up citizen, Allen Iverson, his 40 points, the Knicks were able to hold on and win today's game at the Garden in overtime. The key was holding the Sixers (who held a double-digit lead halftime lead) to only 11 points in the third quarter. Unfortunately, the Knicks were unable to contain the Sixers (who outplayed them in the final two minutes of regulation) until they jumped to the early lead in the overtime. Stephon Marbury returned to putting up his own big numbers, and my personal rookie of the year, Channing Frye, also picked up 21. The Knicks have now only played 4 games at home this year (2-2). Sometimes the Knicks look so good, and then they play games like they did the other night against the Bobcats. We'll see...

Tonight marks the first meting between the Eastern Conference rivals (Bulls and Knicks) since the Octoboer trade that sent Eddy Curry and Antonio Davis to New York. The Knicks are 1-5 against the East this season. :-)
It is said that Curry will be available to play, after missing the past 3 games with a strained muscle in his left calf. My guess is that Curry will cut into Channing Frye's and Curry will be a bit rusty. Prediction: Bulls 102, Knicks 89

Look for a big game from Jerome James tonight. A double double wouldnt surprise me. But this is why I wasnt upset to see James go, a good player but kinda represents whats wrong with so many NBA players. Last year he doesnt show up with those performances till Sacramento when he had something to prove against his former team, and it was the playoffs and with more coverage, so he knew he could improve his free agency value with some great performances. So I see maybe a great game from James, but a Sonics win.

I don't expect the Knicks to win, but I was hoping that they would at least play hard (like they did on Friday night at Detroit). This has been a very ugly first half for this Knicks (and I am not just talking about those retro uniforms). The offensive turnovers and missed free throws have just been so frustrating so far. As for those uniforms, I would love to just paint a white line between the orange numbers and the blue jerseys so that I can see what player is actually shooting the ball. I'm not going to bitch because Sonics lead by 13 but it's a regular season game and the Sonics are using a Center who has never played anything but garbage time before.

Nevertheless, I read that Jamal Crawford had 19 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter. The Knicks are going to have tons of home games in the second half of the season. Three suspects were in police custody Wednesday in the shooting death of the brother of New York Knicks guard Quentin Richardson.
Lee Richardson, Jr., 31, was shot outside the family's Chicago home Monday during a robbery, police said.
His father, Lee Richardson, Sr., 62, was with him at the time but was not injured, family members said.
This was the second time a Richardson brother was fatally shot. When Quentin Richardson was 12, his 23-year-old brother Bernard was killed on the city's South Side. The case remains unsolved, his family said.

Quite the opposite result for the Knicks last night as they continue their second west coast road trip of the year. The Knicks were playing so well in the first half of the game against the Clippers that I just knew that they would NOT win the game. An NBA game can be odd like that so often. The loss to the Clippers puts the Knicks at 6-12 (many of those games being on the road). Things will get better--that is, after they get this game at Phoenix out of the way.

To avoid being called a "hypocrite"

I will admit to occasionally participating in the political discussions as well. I was only frustrated because in the instance of my last post, there wasn't a single active sports topic being discussed.
Anyways, regarding the rumored acquisition of Artest, I'm starting to have mixed feelings. Ask me two days ago, I would have said that it is the dumbest possible move--he's a bratty but talented guy who would be bad influence on a relatively young Knicks team. But the defense that I saw last night from the Knicks was so awful that they could use Artest's skills, even with the baggage that he brings. If they can make his personality fit in the organization, a la the Bulls with Dennis Rodman, then maybe it could work out.
More pressing, in my mind, is that this Knicks team really needs to trade Starbury. He doesn't like handling the ball in Larry Brown's system, but he's too small to be a pure shooting guard. And despite his great career stats, Marbury is not quite as skilled as Iverson or Steve Francis at generating points as an undersize guard.

I'm not a Knicks fan by a longshot, but I think they've got a promising future with Curry, Frye, Robinson, Lee, Ariza, etc., so long as Thomas doesn't screw things up with trades (has any GM ever drafted so well and traded so badly?). That said, I think the Knicks should definitely go after Artest, so long as they don't have to give up Frye. Some of the rumored deals (which are probably b.s.) have Indiana taking back next to nothing for Artest, so I think the Knicks have room to play.
