As a Rutgers alumnus, I'm glad to see my Lady Knights through a scary 2nd round match-up. I was struck by something in the game recap where they said that Poindexter had missed the early part of the season "for undisclosed reasons." Does anyone have any inside info as what that was about? Disciplinary? Personal? Academic problems would presumably matters of record.

Also on the subject of Poindexter, was anyone at the Big East final game and have a scoop on her spat with Geno Auriemma? Did he say anything to her? If not, what did she think he said?
HornFan
Shades of Leona Helmsley?

Penn State coach Rene Portland "fired" three of her players immediately after being eliminated from the NCAA tournament by # 13 seed Liberty University. Penn State was a #4 seed.

QUOTE
Coach Rene Portland told her team following its loss to Liberty in the first round of the NCAA tournament Sunday that three players would not be returning to the team,...
I would think this won't help her in recruiting in the future.

You're Fired!

Sounds like she's getting rid of some lesbians again... wink
JC
It really sounds kind of strange. The girl averaged 10.4 points/game despite not being in the starting lineup after Feb 10 and she's being dropped?
HornFan
The Penn State boards are buzzing about racism as well as lesbian issues. Bizzare.

Horn, do you have a link to the Penn State boards?

Michigan State advances to the Elite 8!! Go Spartans!! Let's make it both in the Final 4!
Di
Interesting that all the final 8 matchups are between the #1 and #2 seeds, except for the Tennessee-Rutgers (who knocked out #2 Ohio State).

I was disappointed to hear my old coach making excuses for his loss!

Ohio State coach Jim Foster thought Rutgers got away with too much on defense.

"Are they talented? Yes! Do they have individually great players? Yes!" Foster said. "Do they have a nice defensive scheme? Yes! Is the game called differently in the postseason than the regular season? Yes!"

I think that if wasn't for their big center (Davenport), they would have been blown out!
RUJock
I was at the game....Davenport kept OSU in the game...if not for her they would have been blown out.

Ill be there tomorrow...Lets go RU! Take down those Lady Vols. It is C Vivian Stringer's time to take the national championship and Cappie Pondexter will lead the way. This team is destined.

Superb observations Di! Keep them coming!

I'm 100% behind you on this one. Come next year I am going to fill out my Women's Basketball Bracket. I might nail a few of these final 4 teams and not feel the letdown and frustration of the "other" brackets!

It's just terrible that the "other" bracket system sets people up for failure and causes them to feel bad about themselves.

The intriguing match-up for me is between MSU & Stanford. I still don't quite understand how Stanford got a #2 seed, but oh well. Put up or shut up time. I have to root for the Pac-10. Go Stanford.
Ms. de Blazer
If Stanford gets to the finals it sure won't be cheap. They had to beat 3-time champ UConn, today face #1 Michigan State and if they beat them will (barring upset) take on Tennessee to get to the finals. Hardly an easy road.
rick bradford
I truly believe Stanford is on a mission. They took the slight of a #2 seed and are running with it. It's never an easy road to win a championship (in over 20 years of playing pool in my league, we've only won the title once), but they are right on track. My supervisor is a huge Stanford fan, whereas I'm just a fan of women's basketball, but a true fanatic on the men's side.
Boltergeist
The Spartan women have joined the men in the final 4, outlast #1 Stanford, who had rallied from 13 down in the 2nd half, but missed a game tying 3 in the last 20 seconds.
HornFan
Michigan State makes the 2nd team this year to make it into the Final Four for the very first time (joining Baylor). Another example of parity creeping into the women's game.

If Diana Taurasi had gone straight to the WNBA, UCONN would not have won ANY of the last 3 championships. Not only do the women not leave college early for the pro ranks, they don't draft them out of high school.
SoFlaSpartan
So to everybody who talked about Stanford getting shafted by the tournament committee and being a 2 seed behind #1 Michigan State, and complained about other seeding issues -- three #1 seeds got to the Final Four, and the fourth was a #2 seed. Three of the regional finals was 1 vs. 2, with the fourth being 1 vs. 3. Sounds like the tournament committee got it right, doesn't it?
HornFan
They do a pretty good job.

Stanford was ranked #1 in the country, but were basically given the top #2 seed (5th). Most of the country doubted their #1 ranking...with good reason apparently. The Pac-10 is weak compared to the SEC, ACC, Big 10 & Big XII and it showed in the tournment.

Arizona beat a bubble team, then lost. Arizona State lost on their home floor. Oregon fizzled in the 2nd round. USC lost early. No FF for the Pac-10...again.
MiamiSpartan
Looks like the seeding was correct after all...
GO STATE!!
JC
Right, the PAC-10 losing 4 games to #1 seeds, and 1 to a #2 proves they're no good. Let's take a real look at how the conferences have performed in the tourney:

1. SEC 12-3
2. Big 10 9-4
3. Big East 8-4
4. Big 12 8-5
PAC-10 8-5
5. ACC 7-6

Not only did the PAC-10 compile a better W/L record than the ACC, they equalled the Big 12. And kudos to Baylor for still being in, but overall the quality of the wins and losses in the PAC-10 was higher. Seeds beaten and lost to by teams in the two conferences:

PAC 10
W - 3,4,7,8,9,10,12,15
L - 1,1,1,1,2

Big 12
W - 1,3,10,12,13,13,14,15
L - 1,5,6,9,10

Anyway, who said Michigan St didn't deserve a #1 seed? At least two predictions I saw (Michelle Voepel's at ESPN being one of them) picked both Michigan St and Stanford as #1's--it was North Carolina they thought was undeserving. And given the way the ACC stunk up the tournament, that looks a pretty good call.
MiamiSpartan
Most things I read, said that Stanford should have been the number one seed over MSU. I never said the PAC 10 was not any good. I simply said the seedings were correct. GO STATE!
theodoresdaddy
I thought Stanford should have had a number one seed

but oh well

how about the WVU women! Finishing 2nd to whatever school it was in the WNIT

Two great Semi-Final games in the Women's Final Four tonight.

Baylor comes back from 15 down to beat the Top #1 Seed in the tournament (LSU) by 11 in the first game 68 to 57. Michigan State came back from a 16 point deficit to beat Tennessee 68 to 64.

Parity takes another step in the door of WBB with two first-timers in the Championship game Tuesday night. Wear green.

It was hard not to get emotional watching those two wins. I think LSU expected a walk from the beginning and when they got a big lead, they clearly relaxed. They must not have watched much of Baylor, really, and that fiery coach. Michigan State's heart was too much for the Lady Vols, too...who I also think expected to win in a walk. I don't know who to root for tomorrow night!
CHIathlete
Big 12 vs. Big 10....gotta luv it!!
basketballfan29
This is good for the game. The same ole, same ole is getting tired. MSU and Baylor deserve to be there. I like UT and LSU (being in SEC country) but its time for other programs to step up
MiamiSpartan
GO STATE!! Great win for the Lady Spartans last night, coming from behind to beat perrenial power Tennessee. Good luck tomorrow night!
HornFan
Rootin' for Baylor!

Last chance for a college basketball fix if you are going through withdrawals from last night's Men's championship game.
Boltergeist
Baylor beacme the 3rd team in the women's tourney to knock off 3 top-seeds en roue to a title ... finishing off Michigan St. 84-62. Most impressive about their run is that the closest margin in those games was 9 in their win over UNC.

Congrats to the Lady Bears. What an impressive title run. Waco must be wild this morning.

They wanted to dance in the streets but they're Baptists - no can do.

That reminds me of one of my favorite jokes:

Why do Baptists never have sex standing up? Because it could lead to dancing.

I grew up Baptist, and that's always been one of my favorite jokes!

Why did the Episcopalian go to hell?

He ate his entire dinner with a salad fork.

I'd always heard the dancing joke as:
Why don't Baptists have sex standing up?
Because people might think they are dancing.

What a totally offensive joke! I cant believe someone would put down the baptist and THINK it's funny.

As a baptist, i find nothing funny about this.

I was brought up Baptist and I think it's hillarious. It's just a little to true don't you think?

Mplsboy, philly was just pushing some buttons. That's all he does here is try to get a rise out of people. Just the same ol' same ol'.

How horrible that ya'all find so much humor in putting down other religions...

Sad, very sad.. especially for the PC crowd.
Ms. de Blazer
I have no problem laughing at the silliness of the Jewish faith in which I was raised. I mean, some of it is absurd. All groups have their sillinesses.
I don't laugh at Holocaust "jokes" and I don't joke about slaughtering Christians either.
PhillyFan
I just hope a muslim school never wins the tourney.
Ms. de Blazer
Congratulations, Philly Fan, you have once again succeeded in hijacking the thread. Any tactic will do to prevent discussion of women's sports, right?
PhillyFan
Let's Review the thread,

Religion joke made, ok to chime in with another.

Simply saying, it's not really nice to make religion jokes.

Twas not I who changed the subject to mock the baptists, I only pointed out it was not nice. For someone so easily offended, i'd think religion jokes would not be proper.
MiamiSpartan
I have a new reason to also cheer for the Miami Hurricanes ladies hoops team: I grew up a block away from new head coach Katie Meier in Wheaton, IL and went to school with her siblings. Nice to see a local woman making it big.

I imagine it is time to clean out the closet *again*. I played for Rene as a starting freshman her 1st year @PSU. I was one that was cleaned out after that first season along w/ 2 others. It is a shame that she continues to get away w/ it. I have a feeling, it won't be for much longer though. biggrin.gif

Was anyone else here happy to see Penn State lose? If I despise one person, it is Rene Portland! Her teams have been lingering around the top 15 or so for years without ever getting to the top, and I hope that will remain her legacy! biggrin.gif
But \"despise\" Rene Portland? That's pretty strong.

But maybe I'm just looking at things through my Blue and White tinted glasses.
Sorry PennState4Ever, but yes, I despise her, my feelings go back to my college playing days, my team was in the same conference as Penn State. Perhaps she is nice off the court, except for her obvious dislike of lesbian players, but on the court, she comes across as a cocky, stuck-up snob!

But everybody has different experiences with and about people, and we all come to different impressions about those people. But yes, your blue and white tinted glasses could be skewing your opinion in her favor biggrin.gif

My boss before my current one named his dog Nittany - use to make me gag when I would hear him call her wink
