you'd have threads like the hockey thread where you would have repetiive posts like Adam's \"I got an email from my super double secret, stalker penpal John Buccigross...\"
Don't you dare pick on Adam -- I will not stand for this! If you don't like the hockey threads then do your part to improve them. wink

I don't know how fair it is to post a list of PhillyFan's comments from around the board. (I didn't recognize them all, so I assume they aren't all embedded in this thread somewhere.) I think the point of his language going too far in this thread is valid; however, by-and-large, PhillyFan's courseness is on display in the P&R forum. And I think the people who enjoy political debate and enjoy going into those threads actually want things to get heated. It's part of the passion of political debate for those who enjoy it and riling someone up comes with the territory. It works both ways with PhillyFan, too. He may be reacting but he may also be using language to prove his points. More than any poster I've seen on Outsports, PF can be very tongue-in-cheek and push people's buttons for the sake of getting a rise out of them. And he usually does have a point to make by doing so, I'd say. So taking quotes out of context is a tough way to condemn someone for being sexist.
Well said.

Some have said this thread was "hijacked" because the Mohr article was posted and the disucssion was supposed to be about the Simmons article. Seeing as how both articles were about the WNBA in general and why neither writer is interested, to me it's appropriate to discuss them in the same thread. But I can understand their point.

The Mohr article took a different tone because he's not exactly a brilliant writer and as a performer, he's not exactly a superstar. In fact, his shots at stardom (the TV show "Action" for example) have pretty much met with failure, and as a result he now is reduced to making appearances in flop movies like "King's Ransom." He's definitely not an A-list player. The fact that CNNSI.com gives him a column is due to the fact that he still has a somewhat recognizable name and, thanks to his not being an A-lister, he comes cheap. And this is in no way a defense of Bill "The Sports Guy" Simmons, whose writing I find overrated. I don't see why he's any more deserving of a column than Jay Mohr.

To me, the thread has now been hijacked, however, as it's become all about PhillyFan. This is interesting because in the days after the original "bull dyke" comment he made, there was pretty much no reaction to it. None. The discussion has mainly revolved around the Mohr article, to a lesser extent the original Simmons article, the WNBA in general, and some complaints about the "anti-woman, anti-lesbian tone" of the thread. It's only in the last day or so that PhillyFan has been singled out. This is patently unfair. If we're going to now have threads where we single out individuals for their perceived character flaws, please let me know because I'm ready to start a few.

If however, we're going to have consructive and insightful dialogue on whether or not the WNBA is properly marketed, or the future of women's professional sports leagues, or how we can get more young girls to be interested in sports -- and young boys, for that matter, because I bet younger kids show more interest in Xbox and the like -- then let's do so.

Amen, Joe!! (all except that part about not liking the Sports Guy. although he is a Boston fan, so I don't idolize him. just find some of his columns pretty funny.)
PhillyFan
I'm actually somewhat offended that JIP doesnt like The Sports Guy.

However, no need to defend. I'm a big boy.

I'm still wondering how these two ladies have done more than all of us put together?

Nice rebuttal to Simmons from ESPN Page 2.

The WNBA is neither a cure for what ails society nor a ragtag underdog worth rooting for against the establishment. It's a business backed by the enormous power and money of the NBA, and it will ultimately succeed or fail based on its long-term ability to generate revenue.

But it's also home to about 200 of the best women's basketball players in the world. They fight through screens, execute pick-and-rolls and rotate on defense. They play basketball with skill and passion. And either you're interested in watching that, or you're not.

The rest is just noise.

It's a good article. Apparently, judging from the date in the URL (050901) the two articles were put up at the same time, perhaps as a point-counterpoint.

stinger -- a good part of the reason I am not a fan of the Sports Guy has to do with his Boston-ness.
PhillyFan
is 050901 the date that thing was created.

Hey Mr DJ... your leaders fail to answer ANY of our questions.. other than calling us sexist.

Good job trying to help the cowards.

050901 is on both -- meaning they were both posted on 09/01/05. Certain articles on ESPN.com get numbered that way...others have different numbers, maybe random for all I know.

Disgraced track star Marion Jones is trying to make a comeback... in the WNBA.
QUOTE
San Antonio Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes confirmed Monday night that Jones has been training with his assistants to possibly play in the WNBA, more than a year after the 34-year-old was released from federal prison for lying about her doping use.

The New York Times first reported that Jones has been working on her skills and conditioning in San Antonio since October. Jones told the newspaper she received a call in May from someone in the NBA asking if she might play in the WNBA.

"I thought it would be an interesting journey if I decided to do this," Jones said. "It would give me an opportunity to share my message to young people on a bigger platform; it would give me an opportunity to get a second chance."

Jones played college basketball at North Carolina, where she was the starting point guard on the Tar Heels' national championship team in 1994. She told the Times that she hopes to play in Europe this winter and in the WNBA next season.

Why no kiss cam at WNBA games?

"3% of fans have kissed someone of the same sex during a game."
Source: ESPN Magazine, 2/11/08

On the other hand, there is the following article that opposes broadcasting what happens quite a lot for lesbians during WNBA games.

"Understood is that women's professional basketball has two major fan bases: dads and daughters, and lesbians. The KissCam issue, frivolous on its surface, puts the effort to cater to both audiences squarely at odds.

Devon Goldsmith, returning to her seat for last Thursday's game between Washington and Chicago, understands Johnson's rationale -- begrudgingly.

"It's one thing for Daddy and Mommy to be kissing, but Mommy kissing Mommy?" said Goldsmith, a 26-year-old systems analyst from Silver Spring. She also happens to play linebacker for the D.C. Divas semipro women's football team and is openly gay. "I don't think people are ready for it now.

"I can see people at the box office, saying, 'I want my money back.' You don't want to curb the fan base by giving something they're not ready for."
