I was saddened to learn a college friend of mine passed away at a very early age (41) of what is suspected to be a heart attack. Darlene Lowery was a real bull-dog in the pitching circle and a real sweatheart off the field. We were in many classes together at South Carolina and we always managed to sit close together and chat all the time.

We never discussed the matter, but I always had guessed that Darlene was a lesbian. In the brief article about her on USC's sports site, they made no mention of surviving partner , spouse, or family. I hope that if she had a partner that USC did not chose to omit that from the article.
