Well, I have played against and with both Div. I mens college players and Div. I women, and I have to disagree. The men have incredible talent and athleticism (never forget going up to contest a shot of a Div. 1 player, coming back down and seeing him still going up before releasing his jumpshot). DI bball is still my favorite game to watch, and I am honored each time I can play with someone who is or has been a DI player. But the women, their skill level was unbelievable. As team members, as passers and pure shooters, as players who learn the game, I think the women have it over the men.
As for Pat Summit, she is a goddess.

Just to stay on topic,
Dear Patsy,
Congrats on your over-inflated win total from beating up on the cupcakes. That win total just flew right under the radar since no one really cares about your sport.
Just wanted to run a few ideas by you to help improve your sport and maybe make it more watchable for the viewsers who enjoy seeing a good basketball game.
1. Install an off track betting system so the people in the stands have easy access.
2. Start selling beer, lots of it.
3. No one recruited below a C cup.
4. Lots of tight cloths
5. More male coaches to raise the level of coaching.
6. Install pole and mirror at basket, player must swing up and dunk (for once)
7. Instead of opening tip, wrestle for it.
8. Playmates
Thanks for your time and I look forward to your reply,
Hugz and Kisses Toots,
The Sports Fans of America.

Since part of your definition of what makes a great coach is how important and popular said sport is, does that make Pat Summit a better coach than say.....Scotty Bowman??

Mar 9 2005, 04:29 PM
Ok maybe I getting in to this late, but here it goes. First of all it took a shorter period of time from the time women started playing basketball to the first woman dunk than it did for the men. Maybe if women were given the same chance as men in the begainning we would be farther ahead of the men.
Next Pat being a great coach well the numbers to speak well, but her attitude has a lot to be desired. Case in point when Shamique Holdsclaw was there and they were playing for the championship. When they lost both Pat and Shamique walk off the court without congratulating the opponents. That is just one of the unsportman like actions by Pat and her teams.

Dude....I'm not a follower of women's sports either. But I do remember watching a stanley cup finals game not too long ago and then finding out that it had a lower TV rating nationally than opening weekend of the WNBA on NBC.
Are you sure it's that popular???
Pat's a great coach, stayed 30 years at the same school and built a powerhouse. Sure womens hoops lacks competitive balance, but that in part is due to her influence in creating such a tremendous program.
I'm sure she could coach and do well at the men's game but why should she even try?? Tennesee is where she belongs(Similar to 'Why should Coach K go to the Lakers? He'd do well also....but let's face it - he a Dukie and nothing else)

Reading Philly Fan's comments reminds me of the trial scene in To Kill A Mockingbird where Bob Ewell takes the witness stand and Scout relates, "All the little man on the witness stand had that made him any better than his nearest neighbors was, that if scrubbed with lye soap in very hot ater, his skin was white."
Substitute penis for white skin and you have Philly Fan.
Trouble is (from the point of view of people like him) that while white skin and penises still confer privilege, it's not as much as it used to be. Why else would he be so infuriated at the accomplishments of women?
Look, few of us read every thread on the board, right? I imagine the big majority skim down the list and open those threads that interest us, while skipping the other. But while I neither know nor care about lacrosse, for example, if others do that's cool. It's no skin off my nose. It sure does not threaten my womanhood. Isn't that how most rational humans feel about others being interested in things we are not?
But Philly Fan is not merely not interested in women's sports, he actively hates them, although I seriously doubt whether he's ever watched any. Hates them to the point that he has to interrupt threads to spew his venom against women who are fast and strong (not to mention smart and successful; there is a reason why Hillary Clinton, whose politics don't even qualify her as a liberal, gets more venom than Bernard Sanders or even Edward Kennedy).
The fact is, Philly Fan would, I am sure, be clobbered if he tried to play tennis against Serena Williams, basketball against Diana Taurasi, soccer against Mia Hammm, golf against Annika Sorenstam or run a footrace with Marion Jones. The fact is that while men's sports records have improved incrementally over the past 100 years, women's sports records have improved by leaps and bounds. The fact is that the gap between men's and women's records is steadily shrinking. The fact is that the best female athletes are better than all but the very best male athletes in their respective sports.
And the fact is that Pat Summitt is one of the most respected coaches in college sports. Respected by male as well as female coaches. Real coaches know that her achievements are far from inflated; if anything she is underappreciated.
The only thing that makes him "better", in his own mind at least, than half the world's population is that he has a penis. And since his penis does not confer as much privilege as it used to, he has to mollify his ego by derogatory terminology, calling women little girls and barnyard animals, demanding women be selected for a team based on breast size, etc. He says the only sport women should be allowed to participate in is cheerleading for men's games. Cheerleading takes skill, but it is also, primarily, about looks, cheerleaders are ornamental, subordinate to the (male) players and serve to titillate male sports fans with veiled and sometimes overt heterosexual displays.
Unfortunately for this sleeping "beauty", the 19th century ended long ago. Women and girls don't have to ask ANYONE's participation to participate in sports. Or to be U.S. Senators. And that's what really rankles, isn't it?
Actually, even in the 19th century his views are backward. While Hollywood in Annie Got Her Gun made Annie Oakley, after singing "You Don't Get a Man with a Gun" throw a shooting match with a rival she'd fallen in love with, in real life Annie Oakley WON the match. Her male rival acknowledged her superiority, married her, retired from sport shooting and instead worked as her manager.
Fast forward a century. Nomar Garciaparra met Mia Hamm when the Red Sox sponsored a charity "celebrity penalty kicking contest". She beat him. They are now married.
So congratulations to Coach Pat Summitt. Congratulations to the women who have played their way into the NCAA tournament. Congratulations and best wishes to the girls who would rather be the next Diana Taurasi than the next Kate Moss. I'm sure you won't pay attention to the dying gasps of penis privilege. Why should you?

Typically, to fast break you have to run, dribble, sometimes pass, then shoot, or dunk at the completion of the fast break.
Watching chic basketball, they can only do one, perhaps two, of these at one time.
Having big hips to get around, that's not really Defense...

Well, it's been "interesting" reading the ravings of some idiotic breeder.
I could spent plenty of time responding to his ignorance and sheer stupidity, but I have enough straight folks in my life as it is, so no need to accept applications. Back of the line, bub.
Yes, it's truly exciting to see Pat break the record. She has worked a long time to achieve this moment in time, and I agree that it's unlikely that her record will be broken.
However, I will address one statement PF said, that I agree with - it's different competition.
The Mens game and the Womens game are now two different approaches, equal in merit, but different in practice. For lovers of the actual game, the Women's game is closer to what Naismith envisioned.
Women's basketball has evolved by leaps and bounds from where it was in 1975, and there are so many people that share the honor of being pioneers, not Just Pat Summitt.
Jody Conradt. Cheryl Miller. Sue Gunter. Billie Moore. Chamique Holzclaw. Rebecca Lobo. The list could go on and on.
I'm very proud of Pat's accomplishments, and indeed, she could have had the Men's coaching job at Tennessee more than once.
But she's not done it alone - the supporting cast is literally thousands.
And Pat is the first one to share credit, which is just another reason why this is such a big deal. She's a class act all the way.
MV :-)
As I read PF’s comments on different threads, I kept thinking to myself that it was beyond me why any self-respecting gay man or woman, having lived and continuing to live with the discrimination we all face in this world, would bully people around. Well duh, no wonder it made no sense, he’s a straight man!!

Take that to the college level and you have 3-4 good programs and the rest stink. Why else would the dude up on Uconn also be packing on the wins? It would be much like letting Rich Kotite coach an NFL all-pro team in division AA football. Lots of wins beating up on the weaklings.

On a related topic, the results of men's and women's graduation rates among college basketball player were released today.
Of the 65 teams in the men's NCAA tournament, 42 graduate less than half their players (teams are given a generous 6 years to graduate players). Two teams, LSU and Minnesota, failed to graduate even one male basketball player. Two of the four #1 seeds, Illinois and Washington, graduated less than half of their players. Bucknell and Utah State graduated 100%. Four other teams topped 70%.
Of the 64 teams in the women's NCAA tournament, only 6 graduated less than half their players. 35 graduated over 70%. Holy Cross, Vanderbilt and Montana graduated 100%, with 5 other schools graduating over 90%.
The article noted that gaps in graduation rates between white and African-American males continue to grow. It did not give comparable stats for white and African-American females.

I believe Pat Summit provides consulting services to the WNBA's Washington Mystics in her spare time in addition to her $800 K salary at UT. She's not only very well respected and successful as a coach, she gets paid quite well doing it. She's won Olympic silver as a player and Olympic gold as a coach.
