I understand the need for closing topics at times - but in the case of some of the posts where the topic is valid but the posts have headed in a wrong direction -example "Sex & the City topic" couldn't the offending posts be wiped out by the moderators & we could have continued on with the topic? The innocent posters are punished along with the offenders. (Which to a cop is patently unfair.)

Not a bad idea, Copman, but I think people need to know when stuff is off-base and not that it was deleted for no reason. I need to ask our moderators, who do a great job being judicious with all of this.

First off Copman, this topic belongs in the About the Board section.

Secondly, I'm glad that thread was closed down. It's a fine line, because if we erase the posts, then we get the people who wrote them e-mailing Jim and Cyd all pissed off (the word censorship is usually in there). I like strongly worded warnings like "Stop it. Now. Take it to e-mail if you want to continue" but that seems to inflame people even more. Best to start a new thread, I think.

Thanks Jim, and that's exactly right, Tarkus.

On this board, moderators don't orchestrate the conversation. We won't step in even if a thread appears to be drifting toward the rocks, only after the hull has been breached. We might delete a post that we found extremely questionable or outright offensive, but in most cases would consult with one another first.

As a member, if you have a serious concern, hit the Contact Us link and bring it to someone's attention, since we really don't read every thread, all the time. But anyway, most Outsports guys are so bright and polite and on-topic, this board is a piece of cake and a hoot.
