The thread title is a quote from another thread by Tarkus.
On the whole, I think this is a very good idea, but there are two problems with it, both of which apply in the case this is quoted from.
First, on a discussion board, unlike an email list, you cannot block the an individual poster. This can lead to mounting frustration with a person whose views so diametrically oppose yours that you feel you have no choice but to respond in a personal way because discussing ideas has lead to a dead end of conversation. Yes, it's childish and counterproductive, but it is understandable.
Second, particularly in this case, several people have voiced the opinion that a poster is not simply writing an opinion on a subject, but systematically befouling the message board as a whole with irrelevant, distasteful and unpleasant opinions that do nothing to further the mission and accomplishments of OutSports. In this case I think it is legitamate to say to such a person, you are disruptive, destructive and unappreciated. Please stop. Certainly nothing written in the thread the quote was taken from rises (sinks) to the level of personal attack.
This is not a complaint about board moderation or rules, but an attempt to start a conversation about where those rules break down, becuase even in the most ordered society, somewhere on the fringes rules will always cease to address reality.

Sorry, but I have no idea what this is referring to. Can you link to where this is discussed?

Doesn't the Outsports BBS have a "twit filter" that allows you to bypass posts from listers you have learned to be knuckleheads?
(Hmmm. If it does, will anyone read this post?) Hello? Hello?

FYI: Was able to determine that gp48 and gamecocks are the same person and both have been prohibited from posting. We will monitor Dallas Top Man just in case. We also will not allow anyone to have a handle so nearly identical to another that it can cause confusion. Thanks.

Well done, Outsports.
At least we won't see someone posting as
CatcherInNYC or Joe in Phillie or Au Tiger in CA!

Absolutely right, that would have been fine too, but I had the impression that Tarkus was seeing things heat up, so he was basically saying "Don't flame back, we know what's going on." As it turned out, nobody freaked except the impostor. Yecch, that kind of behavior creeps me out...
Maybe I shouldn't say this, because I haven't read all his posts, but...
While I can certainly understand why gp43 and gamecock were upset by this poster, I really can't see that the poster's content was really that offensive. Why is it so offensive to say "you can smell the cum in the air" on a board on which we had a whole thread devoted to rimming? And while it's not my thing, there ARE gay men who have a fetish for straight guys. So there's a stereotype that ALL gay men have this? Do we really want to eliminate any one who happens to conform to certain stereotypes from the board? It's not like he was advocating slipping roofies to straight guys and raping them or seducing 12-year olds.
And I happen to agree with him that New Orleans is more hedonistic than Las Vegas. New Orleans is about sensual players for their own sake--the taste of good food and drink, the sound of live music. Las Vegas is about money--and the pleasures of Las Vegas are about showing off your money by eating in the splashiest restaurants and buying the most expensive hookers.

First off, they were intentionally using similar names to regular posters. Second, this is first and foremost a SPORTS board. They never, ever posted anything regarding sports. Their sole purpose was to shock, titilate and offend. Cyd and Jim have very graciously provided gay men and women with a place to come together and celebrate our love of sports, as well as the occasional other topics. We as members ahould treat the site as well as the other members with respect, period.

EXCELLENT ! I'd be pissed if someone signed up as Copmen- or Copsman. Too confusing. Since we can't see each other we know each person by his name & opinions only.

I hope the culprit behind all this nonsense runs away for good. Getting into bitchy tiffs with other posters over something as irrelevant as opinions is one thing (and Lawd hab moicy, I dun beens a baaaad boy in dat category).
Hijacking another man's moniker to posit questionable blurbs is another thing entirely.

I'd just like to note, echoing AU Tiger, that this board was able to quickly and effectively deal with this situation precisely because it has a reputation for spirited and controversial discussion. The regular posters and moderators have demonstrated an ability to quickly and decisively determine the difference between spirited conversation and troublemaking. Congrats all round, and thanks.

Cheers to Outsports!!!! I do agree with attack the opinion, not the person. It is ironic however just last week I was personally attacked on the George Bush thread by both Twin 58 and Jqueer. And just today on the Dell Guy thread and What makes a guy gay thread. With the worst offender being Sparty on. (I was told to inform the monitors instead of lashing back.) These few petty times are small compared to the fun and love the guys haave for each other. I know after having a couple of very bad years personally I can always find support and brotherhood here. Thanks Jim and Cyd.

thumper, have you ever heard the old saying, "what goes around comes around"? You cry out about being attacked in various threads, yet you don't show much respect or courtesy to other board members. Here's one of your posts in the Dell Dude thread:
"This is one of the stupidest discussions I've read yet on this board. I'ts just a commercial. Get a life guys!!!"
God forbid you show some restraint and just skip over the thread. No, you had to make a derisive comment, and then when you get bashed for your rude remarks, you cry victim (and not a word of apology, by the way). Sorry, pal, but it doesn't work that way. To get, you gotta give. So the next time, before you don the badge of victimhood ... um, how do I put it? How about "Clean up your own backyard ..."?
Once again, gentlemen, personal resentments or disagreements are not appropriate for this public forum. Please use email or the Private Messaging feature for such discussions. Thanks for your cooperation.

Now, Thumper, what was the point of your posting that criticized the discussion of the "Dell dude"? The beauty of this discussion board is that if something doesn't interest you, you can skip over it. There are countless threads that I find either stupid or uninteresting but I don't have any need to go into those threads to call that topic stupid or uninteresting. Surely you can't be surprised at the response your comment received.
Yes, you have a right to post your thoughts (as long as you don't attack someone), but just because you have a right to do something doesn't make it the right thing to do.

You were? Would you be so kind as to direct us to the "George Bush" thread and the specific offending message so we may see for ourselves this personal attack? Thank you.
Best wishes,
