Full Version: An Urge to Purge?

Dear Board caliphs,

I was (manually) looking for a message from last year, and noticed that some of the older messages are no longer there. Just curious: is there a periodic date-driven purge, or is it based on the capacity of a specific forum? Thanks!
Jim at Outsports
We have purged for anything not posted to in more than 140 days. We saw no need to keep topics that hadn't been updated in that long. Sorry if you lost anything. We will do this on a periodic basis. These boards do chew up the space.

What about the pictures that are directly posted instead of using links? How does that affect things?

Joe iP - Not to step on Jim OS's ultimate answer, but one of the good things about this board is that the images are also links.

The person creating a post specifies that he wants an IMG link rather than a URL link. Then, when a reader clicks to see that page, it is "created" on the fly - in other words, the software goes out to the ORIGINAL site (say, sports.yahoo.com), finds the image, then it "inserts" the image in the proper spot in the Outsports page that the user sees (along with the text and quotes and other stuff).

Now, because the bandwidth and CPU effort used in building the page is on the user's side, the Outsports admins have asked us to self-police and not overdo the images, in consideration for people with slower CPUs and modem connections.

The bottom line is that that the server that the Outsports board resides on NEVER actually has the image saved on it. This is not only important for space reasons, it also meets "netiquette" rules about only linking to images, NEVER downloading them (this is the mistake that the owner of the defunct "Team Dane" page made).

Moreover, if the usage/linkage is fair but the person who originally posted the image objects to a link, that person has two remidies over this "fair usage". He/she can either:

a) contact the site owner and request that the link be removed or
cool.gif remove the image from the open Internet entirely, immedately rendering every link obsolete

Outsports itself faced such a situation a couple of months ago when someone from a Michigan college got their panties in a wad over an innocent link:
