As much controversy that surrounded her during her tenure as majority owner of the Cincinnati Reds...I don't think she was nearly recognized for as much good as she did for the community. Huge supporter & advocate of the Cincinnati Zoo, and always had a soft spot for all children.

All I really know about her is what David Wells relayed in his book. Long story short, she was a crazy, drunk, racist cheapskate with absolutely no knowledge of baseball.
Bill W
Hell is a louder, more insensitive place today.

I remember that very scary cover of SI she did smoking a cigar. Geez, that scared the crap out of me! Who will care of Schotzie now?

Though I'm sure David Wells is an excellent judge of character, I always liked the old broad, in the sense that she was just completely nuts and kept things kind of interesting. Not to get too feminist here, but a male owner of a baseball team wouldn't have gotten any heat, or at least wouldn't have been publicly humiliated, for saying and doing everything Marge Schott did.

Wow, watch out for lightening...I thought she was entertaining, too...well, except for the Hitler comments and the Swastika she kept in her dresser! smile.gif Plus, she let Schotzy shit all over the field, which was more than the Reds did on that field thru most of the 90s.

She was railroaded by the other baseball owners (the boys club) into selling controlling interest in her team. She was eccentric like other owners in the past and was branded more by a couple of poor comments, than she was given credit for all the good she did.

Look what present ownership has done to that franchise. Clueless.

I admired Margie for her guts. Too bad she epitomized the unsophisticated hick from the west side of Cincinnati. But then, "Hitler was good in the beginning". Maybe she was referring to the Autobahns? Like Pete Rose, Margie just didn't know any better.

I wonder if she admired Mussolini, because, hey, at least the trains ran on time.

I think she was embarrassing but in a way I prefer her over the soulless corporate drones that now riddle the ownership ranks.

"A couple of poor comments." About a hundred that we know about.

My favorite stupid (as opposed to hateful) Marge comment, on live TV after the 1990 World Series as Gulf War I was ramping up: "This is for our boys in the Middle West."
coyoteugly
Ah yes, yet another statistic that Bill W tracks – The number of poor comments made by Marge Schott.

Well done, Bill W.

"I guess I always thought of her as a tragic figure," said Fay Vincent, a former baseball commissioner. "I think she tried very hard to do the right things for baseball, but she had some enormous limitations and she had some difficulty overcoming them."

Was he trying to compliment her?

Sounds like Jerry Reinsdork, except for the racist part.

An old comic:

fantomas
(To the tune of Weill's* "Bilbao Song"):

"Sie war die schlechtste
Sie war die schlechtste
Auf der Baseball-Welt...."

Tschüß, Fräu Schotzimummi!

Es ist verdammt heiss mit dem Teufel....
