Full Version: Can the Mariners get to the WS this year?

I'm looking forward to yet another great season from my favorite team. Maybe they won't win 116 games this year but I think they'll win enough to get past the A's. Also, how sad for the Texas Rangers getting off to such a bad start. With some of the players being racist, homophobes, thieves, or bad-sports, or some combination of these. not to mention the money-hungry types. It couldn't happen to a better bunch of guys.

I would love to see the Mariners in the world series of 2002, playing the NY Mets of course.
That would be great for the fans of the team and for the city of Seattle, enough with the stinking Yankees.
Without Randy Johnson, Alex Rodriguez and crybaby Griffy, Jr. the Mariners have done well the last 2-3 years. Good for them. I do hope they go all the way, losing game 7 to the NY Mets.
I'd love to see a world series like that.

Go Mets !

There are what, ~155 games left? Too early for the recent Oakland series to mean all that much, but still, I can't imagine that it thrills Mariners fans that the M's just lost two of three against their biggest rival for the AL West, at home no less. The AL West is brutal this season. And while the four ALW teams are all beating each other bloody, the BoSox get to feast on the likes of Baltimore, Tampa Bay, and (to a lesser degree) Toronto. Although whoever comes out second in the AL West will probably be the second best team in the league, the wild card goes by sheer numbers - no "style points" are factored in.

Can the Mariners get to the World Series this year? No denying, they're a heckuva team. But it'll be even tougher to win their division this season, and after that, those damn Yankees are looking as good, if not better, than ever.

I'm getting so tired of the Ichiro bashing on the Mariners dicussion boards. If he has one or two bad games, they start in with their s***. Last night he got a stand up triple and drove in two runs yet, a few lame a***** try to blame him for the loss. I'm not to worried about this series with the A's. I hope by the time we play them again, our pichers get sharper though. Also, it would help to not leave the bases loaded a couple of times.

Most of the people that call KIRO to talk with Vinny are Dumbasses and on the boards also, sheet I'm on a message board

They certainly can, if they buy tickets.
Bwahahahahaha.

As a recent convert to baseball and especially to the Mariners, I'd love to see Seattle make it all the way to the World Series this year. They're off to good start at 10-3, but of course there's a long way to go.

In last night's game against the Rangers, there was a goofy ad promoting tickets to Mariners home games. It featured Bret Boone (in a sleeve-less shirt...yum!) being told by a tall, bald, goateed guy that he (Bret) had to be the new leader of the team. In the next scene, the bald guy was shaving Bret's head. I gather the bald fellow is a former Mariner, as I didn't recognize him from the current roster. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, please tell me who he is. And also, what does the term 'mojo' mean? I keep hearing this word in reference to the Mariners (including this ad), but I can't figure out what it means.

The bald guy is Jay Buhner. A mojo is something someone holds onto for good luck.

How about Ruben Rivera in this series already a grand slam and a 5 for 5 game. How about A-rod, Rocker and Everett.

Marc - didn't you see the Austin Powers movies ?
Lots-of-us
Jay Buhner, who was a Mariner until his retirement last year and is now on the coaching staff, was on of the most beloved Mariners ever. One of his "trademarks" was his shaved head. Each year, the Mariners sponsored at least one "Buhner Buzz Night" where everyone who wanted to could have their head shaved for a free ticket to that night's game. Buhner always shaves a few of them himself. This year, Boonie has kind of stepped forward as a team leader, hence the commercial with Buhner persuading him to shave his head.

Kudos to the Mariners for continuing the tradition of Buhner Buzz Night, even after Jay's retirement. This year it was April 2.

Go, Mariners!! 10-3. Woo-hoo!!

Thanks guys for your prompt replies to my questions; you've been very helpful. I only started following baseball with interest last year, and am still on a bit of a learning curve when it comes to some of the finer points of the game. Love those Mariners, esp. Ichiro and Bret Boone. Lots of other talented players too. Now that you mention it, I recall the name Jay Buhner from last year but didn't recognize him in the commercial. That's kind of a neat tradition they are continuing! I've been to Seattle a couple of times, it's a nice city! I've never been to a major-league game, but hopefully my first one will be at Safeco Field.

I did see one of the Austin Powers movies, Osufan, but it was several years ago. If Jay Buhner was in the film I saw, I guess I wouldn't have known who he was.

I'm glad the 'mojo' mystery has been solved for me! I couldn't find the word in any conventional dictionary, but wouldn't ya know, right after gp43 explained it, I found 'mojo' in an on-line dictionary.

Marc - Austin Powers Two - it's all about him losing his "mojo" - you must see it, hurry b/4 Number 3 comes out this Spring/Summer

Sure they can get to the World Series, all they have to do is buy tickets :-)
Yanks are coming out of the AL-- still.
